  5. This Friday, March 19th, I am presenting the New York-based Trio Tarana with renowned percussionist and jazz musician Ravish Momin. The local group Chakra will open. An Evening of World Rhythms featuring Ravish Momin's Trio Tarana with local guests, Chakra Friday, March 19th from 9 pm - midnight Columbus Dance Theater- 592 E. Main St. Admission: $10 adults, $5 students with valid ID. I've given the event the general (generic?) title of "An Evening of World Rhythms", but more specifically, both of these groups have a significant Indian classical music influence. Trio Tarana represents a unique confluence of classical Indian music, electronic rhythms, and jazz. In the trio Ravish Momin plays a mixed kit (traps + tabla) with two string players, while one musician also manipulates electronic beats from a laptop. If you enjoy odd time signatures, and really fast rhythms-- this is certain to grab your interest. A fun tidbit about Ravish Momin is that while being active in the New York experimental music scene, he is also a percussionist in pop star Shakira's touring band. Ravish has also performed with William Parker, Billy Bang, Brad Shepik, Christian Howes, Napoleon Maddox and others. Chakra is a collaborative local project involving Hakaun Kaya, Brad Mellen, Brad Poure, Matteo Amburgy, Hans Utter, and Utpola Borah. The group is focused on Indian music and rhythms, and their sound shows they have really dug deep into that music. Links to sound samples for both groups: Ravish Momin/Trio Tarana: http://ravishmomin.com/audio/ Chakra: http://www.myspace.com/518324704 Hope to see you out on FRIDAY. Should be a really unique show.

  13. last night on wkcr-fm host mitch goldman with guest host saxophonist eric person playing and knowledgeably discussing rare recording dates with 2 seminal(even more so 40 years later)musical titans, neither of which were commercially released. both recordings originated in 1969. the first was a recording of a live miles davis "lost quintet" from the french riviera in 1969. the quintet at this time included shorter(still mostly on tenor), corea, dejohnette, and dave holland. the group was relaxed, at its peak, and smokin.' the second was an apparently never released 1969 nyc collaboration between jimmy hendrix and organist larry young with 2 unknown sideman, possibly from hendrix band. while in studio for other recording sessions. i believe that this was from the personal collection of person. i'm not sure this music can be defined, but it is fabulous music. there is bt one vocal. hendrix colors and inventiveness are from another world.

  19. WORLD WIDE APPEAL from Maya Homburger and Barry Guy to set up a fund for ERHARD HESSLING Submitted by NoBusiness Records on Tue, 2010-01-05 00:11. announcement: Dear all, this appeal goes to musicians who have worked closely with Erhard over the last ten years, to musicians and friends who know him , to organisers, clubs, festivals and to all the fans of improvised music who have enjoyed a variety of events thanks amongst others to Erhard’s management, commitment and first of all love for the music and the musicians. Some of you might know, and to some it might come as a surprise that he is in a crisis situation right now, which needs to be sorted out URGENTLY. For a variety of reasons, also related to Erhard’s severe illness three years ago and also linked to the general financial crisis, which makes it more difficult to set up extended tours, find funding, cheap travel etc. etc., he has got himself into a situation, where he cannot even pre-fund upcoming tours and sadly has large accumulated debts. He needs urgently some funds, to be able to clear all debts and to start again, probably only part time as a manager, but also exploring new areas. We feel very strongly, that this is a moment, where we all: musicians and audience a like should pull together and collect enough funds for Erhard to get out of his frightening situation. Erhard has been an invaluable manager behind the scenes and is directly responsible for some of the most amazing musical experiences for musicians on tour, for audiences in clubs and in many festivals during the last years. Now, that he needs help, please make a gesture - small or large. With many joining in, it will add up to a substantial sum, which we can then hand over to Erhard. As it happens, we still have a Euro bank account in Ireland, which we were just about to close. But in the hope that hundreds of people might want to pay in their contributions, we would keep it open until we are in Ireland in February. At this point, we would close it, and collect the cash for Erhard. The main reason behind this: to avoid taxation or any other silly charges. If there are any specific questions, please send us an e-mail on : info@maya-recordings.com Ideally, you send money directly, and please as soon as possible to the account below, either from personal funds, or from the proceeds of benefit concerts, or from your next CD sales on tour or whatever. Every little bit will help. We are hoping for MANY people to join this fund raising action. THANKS for your help !!! Kind greetings from both of us Maya and Barry Here are the account details: please mark your payment : E.H. 24. i just heard a new, to me, saxophonist, andy laster. his thing seems to be a very adventurous, but very elegant chamber jazz. most of that type of music quickly falls flat with me, but this guy seems much more interesting, with a lovely lovely tone. does anyone know anything about andy?
