  4. A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar. During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for YouTube exposing their lack of cooperation. The Manager responded: "Good luck with that one, pal." So he posted a retaliatory video on YouTube. The video has since received over 5.5 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: "Good luck with that one, pal." Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has lead to a sharp increase in orders. Here's the video ....
  5. i've been either watching or listening to 25 college football games today. i saw or learned of several amazing deeds and feats, but 2 coaching moves astounded me. first was the storied harvard-yale game while you folks were watching osu. yale, on a long losing streak to archrival harvard, much like the current osu-michigan series, this season hired a new football coach. coach decided, with a 10-7 lead and less than three minutes to play, on his 20 yard line, decided to try a fake punt reverse on fourth-and-22, but fell 6 yards short. yale moved in for a touchdown to take the lead and win the game. only once in my life have i seen such an inept move, and that was in the pros 30+ years ago. next came the SEC game between 2 football schools who are having great years, mississippi and lsu. lsu, with a young quarterback, in the last minutes of the game, was moving down the field for at least a tying field goal attempt, from about the other team's 45 yard line. lsu, for no good reason, let 30 seconds run off the clock before calling a time out with only 9 seconds remaining on the game clock, before completing a long miraculous 4th down and 25 pass to about the 10 yard line with only 1 second left on the clock. a well coached team would have had the field goal team sprint onto the field for a tying attempt, or at least have the regular qb throw a desperate pass to the end zone. what did lsu do? THEY DOWNED THE BALL, THROUGH THE BALL INTO THE GROUND, WITH ONE SECOND LEFT ON THE CLOCK. do i blame the quarterback? no. i blame the entire coaching staff, led by les miles, who makes several million dollars a year for this inept training of these young men. rarely, if ever, have i seen such inept coaching, which these young men will remember the rest of their lives. what respect can they retain...............?

  7. for the record, they did not have a time out left. the juxtaposition of events which led to this only happen once in a lifetime. the bobbled ball incredibly at the first down marker. being just a second or two below the 2 minute warning, where a coach could call for a replay. i'm thinking that 90 times or more of 100, belichek made what would have been the correct call.
  8. I thought the first thing we do, as men, is protect our balls. Bilichick loses another close one with another bad decision. A capper to a night gone bad. Pats team bus hits parked police car on way out. Oop!

  10. his late 50s abc quintet recording with kenny dorham is really special, as was a john lewis tribute solo recording. dick and john were both articulate, very close and shared similar feelings about jazz performanceand composition. i still have to work my way through some katz interviews made at the time of john's death.
  11. what a unique talented voice in the world of music we have lost. among the katz recordings indispensible to me are albums of folk music arranged for helen merrill, a couple of unique pacific jazz recordings in the late 50's with the chico hamilton quintet, folk songs for way out folk, and those tony scott recordings. those musics are burned indelibly into my soul.
  12. in my semi-inebriated state, chris makes sense to me. i'll reread it in the morning. http://tinyurl.com/yb3zb8w
  13. thank you. i was unaware of either work.
  14. i'm too cheap or poor for ipods. my recordings and radio programs are in mp3 and wmp formats on several big external drives. i can VERY quickly load my choices for the day and delete the unwanted into my inexpensive($30)24 gig player, which runs about 50 hours on one aaa battery. i love this inexpensive original arrangement.
  15. using the name of another artist to promo one's own own show or album is invariable, with few exceptions, puerile lame faire. can we mention the few tribute albums(to musicians) that are truly tributes? soon after trane passed, mccoy did an impassioned solo album, i forget the title, honoring him which, to me, was his finest work. marilyn crispell, somewhat later, did a lovely tribute album, tor trane, as well. rova saxophone quartet did a gorgeous impassioned tribute, ascension, then spoiled the whole affair with electric ascension.
  16. thanks al and goldy for verbalizing what i've felt for years. bean and prez are forever wrestling in my soul. one day one's on top, the next day the other. the one on top is always the one i've heard latest.

  18. a series of 3 oldies coming up immediately. i've already missed a couple.
  19. it's my day! amazon has it as a download for $6.99.
  20. yup--that was the title.
  21. i was very pleased and surprised to hear a shelley manne-coleman hawkins duo recording from about 1962 on the radio tonight(or at least 2 cuts from it). bean played a little bit of very competent piano on the recording. can i be enlightened more? this would seem very much to be a 'must have' recording. hawk seem energized and stimulated by this recording and shelly was shelley.
  22. The way I had heard it, Sonny didn't realize how far down it was. He thought it was just a few feet, and he was feeling loose and wanted to "work the room" a little. It's been quite a while since I watched that video. Is it true that Joe Lovano has broken BOTH of his arms? That has to be the only way to get this man to put down his horn. Get well soon!
