notable nfl quotes from the recent news wires--- White Sox GM Kenny Williams on his son, 49ers punt returner Kyle Williams, receiving death threats after Sunday's loss: "I have to hear about threats on your son's life while you're watching TV and it certainly makes you question our culture of sports as it stands." Appearing on ESPN's "First Take" Monday morning, Baltimore Ravens LB Terrell Suggs tells Skip Bayless: "Be an analyst. Don't be a douchebag"

thoughts on the hungry and homeless a long night

occasionally, one finds an article that runs counter to conventional thinking. the discussion possibilities concerning arts and their performance can lead to interesting discussion. forgetting is crucial to good thinking Solomon Shereshevsky could recite entire speeches, word for word, after hearing them once. In minutes, he memorized complex math formulas, passages in foreign languages and tables consisting of 50 numbers or nonsense syllables. The traces of these sequences were so durably etched in his brain that he could reproduce them years later, according to Russian psychologist Alexander R. Luria, who wrote about the man he called, simply, “S” in The Mind of a Mnemonist. But the weight of all the memories, piled up and overlapping in his brain, created crippling confusion. S could not fathom the meaning of a story, because the words got in the way. “No,” would say. “This is too much. Each word calls up images; they collide with one another, and the result is chaos. I can’t make anything out of this.” When S was asked to make decisions, as chair of a union group, he could not parse the situation as a whole, tripped up as he was on irrelevant details. He made a living performing feats of recollection. article continues with link.

which reminds me----there are several lengthy detailed articles about zealous federal prosecutors who, at the time, had a hard-on for lay. it's called something like--"the truth about enron". to many, the venom cast upon paterno is vaguely reminiscent of the ken lay witch hunt, while others have no problem with his sandusky responses.

it would seem that one's legacy is often remarkably colored by the date and timing of their demise. a paterno death perhaps a year or more ago might have led to a much different public reaction. this makes one wonder if miles, trane, ayler, bird, eric, or bix had lived into new eras, their golden legacies might be considerably different.

miami heat, carnival cruise lines owner, micky arison is feeling heat these days, as well as owning it. anyone for a carnival lines jazz cruise? http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/2012/01/16/miami-heat-owner-lost-460-million-so-far-on-italian-cruise-ship-disaster/ The terrible cruise ship disaster in Italy involved Carnival Cruise Lines, and as you may know, that’s the company headed by CEO Micky Arison, who also owns the Miami Heat. Arison — chairman, chief executive and majority owner of Carnival — is said to be worth about $4.5 billion. But he’s worth less today, as shares in Carnival tanked, losing about a fifth of their value following the disaster.

bill finegan remembered "When master big band arranger Bill Finegan died at the age of 91 on June 4th, many jazz fans had forgotten that he had directed the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra in an unusual concert of his inventive and pioneering arrangements for the 1950s Sauter-Finegan Orchestra. The concert in November of 1991 at the Tri-C Metro Campus Auditorium was the first time Finegan had conducted any other band playing the arrangements of the revolutionary orchestra he co-directed with Eddie Sauter. Before that concert, Finegan told me he had some second thoughts. "Before I got here," he said, "I thought 'I don't think I want to do this any more. I did it for years with the band, but after hearing the way these fellows play – and they're such marvelous players and work so hard on these charts – yes, I would like to do some more if I could find guys like this to play it."" article continues with link CAN YOU IMAGINE THE SAUTER-FINEGAN AGGREGATION PLAYING A HIGH SCHOOL PROM?????
