Ah, I was just going to send in my spare Rubels...

I still think the Czechs have a better team than Greece, but they missed too many chances tonight. everyone agrees that the Czechs are better technically, but how much of that have they shown, or rather, how much of that were they able to show? Not much to be honest. And that may account for the previous game as well. The Greek team can be criticised for playing too defensive, but that's a bit of a short curve. Yes, they were defensive, but they were offensive as well. Them Greeks made many many miles today (as in the previous matches), none of them felt too important too march all the way back to the own half when necessary. These guys showed some definite effort and that should be appreciated for what it is. They won because they wanted to and because no one and no expectation forced them to. Pretty convincingly good football making the very best of limited means.

I just had all my Swiss money transferred to Catesta BTW, he promised he would buy me loads of Mosaic sets. He is allowed to divert some to your paypal account. It will be booked under Mr Testa, but it will actually be me....

some deliberations... may sound negative, but eyyyyy.... 50-75$ a month, that's 600-900$ a year. That's a lot of money. The initial boost that brought you 400$ will not hold on in eternity and people are unlikely to donate every month. My guess is you will need a LOT of bandwidth, unless you seriously limit uploads. Question: do links to pics on other sites (just look at the babe thread...), affect your bandwidth too? or is this completely outside of your realm? Just some thoughts to help this effort. as I have no paypal account, I try to add some like this, may be frowned upon, but it's all in good spirit.

and FEGH it, the czechs blew it like I was afraid they would: not able to create chances and against a team that does NOT make any mistakes in the defense, that tactic is not going to work. Too heavily dependent on counter attacks overall. I really, really, really like this tournament. A final game no one could have dreamt up. I wouldn't be surprised if the Greek did a big Danish'92 on us

Otto now has a HUGE purple chair right next to Mr Zeus on Mount Olymp. SENSATIONAL!!!!
-
mount olymp is standing strong. not many defensive mistakes, not much for the Czechs to take advantage of. 't Was entertaining. Hope this does not go into penalty kicks. If the Greeks would win this, I would not be totally upset, Czechia was pretty disappointing...

Blues for Alice by Roland Kirk (We Free Kings), not better, but certainly as good as the originally issued version and, what's more, with a *very* different solo section.

you had me fooled....

You're being very harsh for this lively confrontation! I can't deny I was a bit bored... drink more, it helps... Still more coffee?? I'm having my fifth now... and you're still not shaking out off your chair?! good grief! I was already restless due to lack of music... (My speakers are still at the doctor's) we'll know from your increased posting frequency in the "listening to" thread when they return and will want to know what it's like to have them overhauled. Pity the tournament will be over by then and you won't be able to watch it de-grumpified.

happens a lot, eh?

Oh thpse eastern Europe names look who's talking, Mr. Kopelakiepelkowiczowicz...
-
try again brownie, still not spelled correctly...

so what is it? "rather disappointing" or "thoroughly enjoyable"?? quite another game than most had expected. Greece is not going to roll over and hand over victory.

couw worked in a comic bookshop, he knows these things. still, I have the impression that however deep the second level meaning was, a whole lot was lost in the silly first level plots. Spidey was nowhere near Moore's Dark Knight shit or the truly great graphic novels of today. Of course European comics have a whole different history, no super heros, yet plenty of action, and with the "hidden layers" shimmering through more clearly and much less flat. Sounds chauvinistic, probably is, but I did read a lot of that American stuff and enjoyed that a whole lot as well.

Quite a bit, actually. Yes, the original Ditko issues have a certain innocence about them, but at bottom existed a hardened cynicism about viewing life from the outside. It's been pointed out that comicdom's obsession with dual identities stems from the fact that a great many of the creators were Jewish. Certainly very few heros conformed to the "blonde, blue-eyed, all-American" ideal. Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man were all dark haired outsiders who were feared and despised for what they were, rather than what they did (which was always good). It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Lex Luthor or J. Jonah Jamison represented a typical anti-semite in their unreasoning hatred of Superman or Spider-Man. In that sense, the alter-ego (Clark Kent, Peter Parker) represents the Jewish American experience of assimilation. How many of these writers and artists overheard anti-semitic remarks by people who didn't know that they were in the presence of Jews? After all, Stanley Leiber changed his name to Stan Lee. It's not difficult to imagine that Peter listening to one of Jonah's anti-Spider-Man diatribes (unaware that he was in the presence of Spider-Man himself) refers to this experience. that particular piece of substance is more in the mind of the reader than in the mind of the artist I'd say. Not to downsize the importance of the comic medium in dealing with "issues," but they issues largely seem to have been there as a reflection of the times, not necessarily as an artistic reworking of the same. Of course there are archetypal (and modern archetypal) themes used everywhere in the comic medium, those are the stuffs good stories are based on. The golden age spidey stories were certainly pretty well told, but to go so far as to say they had a lot of big great deep substance is a bit of a stretch I think.

first we deal with Czech vs. Greece. The Greeks were all smiling just now, none of the Czechs were. This is the first game in which the Czechs are no longer the "underdog" or the "secret tip." Let's see how they handle it, I hope they show they have grown with their image.

start reading catesta. there's some way cool stuff hidden in the deep layers.

you're juist too girlie and scared Scared of what? Is there a pronunciation query going on in there somewhere? among other things... There have been huge brawls over how to correctly pronounce the name of that Brötzelwötzel, whatsisname and all those Italians that pop up there all the time with their funny names are not friendly on the memory cells either. Off late we have been locking people up and have them listen to lots of Brötzelmensch, Ayler, and Kenny G, flipping between those unexpectedly and measuring reactions on a cellular level. big fun for the whole smelly rat family! -

I have stopped reading all the short, one article threads in the politics forum. I'm funny that way...
