Hi Joe, you should really get those sessions out there again, remastered and all. They are absolutely wonderful and I've had the Stash CD running several times already (the sound quality is not really that bad, I think). Nice to see you here on the board! Cheers! P.S.: I'm on away from my own PC at the moment, so posting is a real hassle. Thanks everyone for your comments. I'll be back on Sunday, own PC and all.

Hi everyone, I'm at my dad's on some dial-up connection (God, stoneage all around), so just a quick question. While listening to a whole bunch of jazz CDs yesterday, we stumbled across one from 1993: Art Farmer/Lee Konitz with the Joe Carter Quartet & Trio. 1993 Stash Records, USA (licensed by Stash from Empathy Records). I found these sessions (August 1983 and October 1984) very (!) enjoyable, but I have no idea about the second label mentioned above. Empathy Records? Any info on this one? And Joe Carter? Any recommendations there? Any more anyone knows about any Art Farmer/Lee Konitz sessions I should check out? Cheers!

Well, I just checked my files: the neato divider was ripped off from another site. This one: Oceanen (Scroll down the page to see it). I'll contact the designer to see if it's freely available. Cheers!

Hi everyone, the Count Basie Website team has been slaving away these past weeks to get the Count Basie Website up and running. Special thanks from my side go to John and Flurin for coordinating all the others who are investing a ton of working hours. Big thanks to all of those as well. But, stop, the site is far from finished. Although the pace has picked up considerably, the heart and soul of the site is still missing. But I know what's coming, so it really is something to look forward to! Still, we need your help right now to run the acid test on those pages that are online, just so we don't find errors 10 minutes before completion. Please have a look at these two sets of pages: 01) Count Basie Website :: Homepage [The homepage is active and from it, you can jump to ...] 02) Count Basie Website :: Impressum [Check out, for example, the contributors part to see what pages will look like]. The design is final and not all of you might like it, but you can still help by letting us know if you notice any inconsistencies when viewing the site in your browser of choice. I'm especially interested in hearing from MAC users to make sure the site displays properly on those systems as well. Thanks for your help and ... Cheers! Volkher P.S.: I will update this thread as other things will need testing. Watch this space. I would like to delete the other thread on color resolution and just keep this one for general testing puposes. I'll see if I can do that myself.

Sounds like my old place (minus the sonic treatment). And, now that I have a much bigger place, the speakers are somewhat up against a slanted wall, facing a wall made from some sort of hollow plaster plates (no idea what these are called in English). In fact, the room is a boom box in itself, but at least it is so big that most of the negative effects are simply swallowed up by all the air in it. It's always been my opinion that one should buy the stereo equipment one likes best ... and then actually have the house built around it to also have the acoustics for it. That's what I would do if I won the national state lottery ... four or five times. First though, I would have all my stereo equipment transported to the Maldives for 12 weeks of listening to my music on the beach while being spoon-fed and served cool drinks whenever I manage to move a finger. Cheers!

What's wrong with eBay is the kind of people that hang around there. Safeguarding agaisnt those imbeciles would pretty much ruin eBay altogether, IMHO. Think about spammers and think about eBay idiots. Trying to keep both out of your life must remain a futile attempt. Cheers!

French "RCA/BMG Jazz Tribune" series ...
neveronfriday replied to neveronfriday's topic in Re-issues
Just checked on AMG (as much as that is possible with all those dang timeouts), and they didn't like any of these albums (4 on this compilation), really. I couldn't read their reviews, but I don't get it. Swinging hard at times, very smooth at others, perfect for my taste. Cheers! P.S.: @Flurin: NOBODY has ever made it out of my place with one of my CDs! I immediately get this faint feeling that something bad is about to happen. Never happens to ME though. -

Just bought it for 6 EURO as new. Let's see what it's like. Cheers! That's money well spent. You won't be sorry! Got it. New and still shrink-wrapped. Excellent stuff! Swings like mad. Beg, steal or borrow. Cheers! -
Mail on the way from Germany. Cheers!

Can you do something about AMG as well? Sorry, but that thing can't be saved anymore. Cheers!

Nitpicker! In fact, if you draw a one-pixel white line just below the text, all items line-up perfectly! It's an optical illusion. I'll do some text re-arranging this weekend. Off to work ... Cheers!

I'm at 1152 * 864. I'll check the page this weekend on all lower resolutions ... haven't had the time yet. That's part of the fine-tuning which I will do when I'm sure that everything is in place. I know where the problem is though, without looking. I compressed the original file by nearly 55% ... which is fine at higher resolutions, but not at lower ones. The image only has 12kb, so a lower compression ratio will only produce a marginally larger file. Nowadays, anything below 20kb is grand, so I can probably get rid of that effect. And, buy yourselves some bigger and better monitors, Jeez. BTW: One thing I notice at higher resolutions is this: Because of the arrangement of the text elements in the header image, the word "Basie" seems a bit off the base line. I know it's an optical illusion (especially on my old but good and trustworthy Nokia monitor), but I think I'll do sth about that. Just call me perfectionist. Cheers, and thanks for all the input everyone. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz..... asleep.

I admit to being somewhat of an audiophile. Within limits (my setup is comparatively cheap). But I have this to say: I have never understood how people can go wild about music and, for example, update to the latest remastering jobs only to have the music squeezed through some crappola equipment. What good does that do the music? That's like photo-copying a Rembrandt and then saying it looks as good as the original. Nobody has to spend tons of money, and some of the voodoo stuff out there is just too much (the equipment is good, but you need to build a house around it to actually have the acoustic environment to get anything out of it), but nowadays there's so much comparatively good equipment around, that, in my opinion, there's no excuse for boom-boxing a good recording to death. And yes, I have lots of good music and care about what's played. But I also care about the sound. Cheers!

I'll bring a film or two, like so ... Cheers!

Hi everyone, as you know, a whole bunch of board members are working on the Basie website which is supposed to go live in August. The basic design has been completed and we want to ask you one simple question. Before answering, please read this post. Designing a site based on a cheaper (but excellent) Content Managment System (in your spare time) and having to collect all the content material from scratch both call for some design considerations: 01) The site is supposed to be as compatible as possible. That is impossible because the CMS uses some XML, CSS and lots of PHP/SQL), but one can get quite close. 02) Modern browsers still don't support all modern "techniques" so it's a choice between locking people out or resorting to programming techniques from years back. I chose the latter. Also because a time factor is involved. 03) The site will be text-heavy and not too graphics intensive. The reason is simple. It's supposed to look clean and because I'm hosting the thing, only images we have the rights to will be used. German law can be tough and if you have someone on your ass checking all your work, as I do (long story, but he causes trouble whenever it is remotely possible), you tend to be more careful. 04) Because modern monitors are often brightness-heavy (lots has been written about bright factory settings which most users don't even know about), I had to use some tricks to delineate the content area from the background without resorting to a darker background image which looked like crappola. I used a slight drop shadow around the main content area. 04) So, the way to go is adding a tiny bit of "fun". I've done so in the header by using a so-called "gradient" (the blue color is not solid but varies in shade) and another drop shadow for the Basie pic. Now the problem. Unfortunately, many people are still using a color depth of 16bit and with that, the header looks like a collection of pixeled blocks. What I'd like to know is which color depth you mostly use. To test, check this page: http://www.count-basie.com/index.php/pages/ [Note: Some server issues today because of backups in progress ... if the page doesn't load ... try again later] If the header looks fine, you're above 16bit, if it's blocky, you're at 16bit ot below. If you have any other input, please do post it here. I can't promise that any major changes will happen, but I'll try to take everything you say into consideration. Thanks for your time and help! Cheers! Volkher

The changes have been long coming. Most people have known for weeks/months that AMG was going pay-site. That's why the thread was started that early. The change to the new layout was, what, one/two days ago. Cheers!

Thanks, I'll pass on that one then. Cheers!

Looking for verve elite edition CD

The last three Schiffrin Elite CDs on eBay Germany went for around 12 Euro. As far as I know, there's a Japanese re-issue out of that one. Cheers!
