I was at the auction. The National Jazz Museum was only the venue for the auction. The lots came from Stephen James Duke's nephew. the piano didn't sell.at the asking price of 300,000 not even when it went down to 50,000. A lot of the contracts went in the region of 300-500. Music manuscripts went mostly for more.

Cds we know exist but we can't find
miles65 replied to medjuck's topic in Offering and Looking For...
From the French Jazz Time series: Special Guitares vol. 2. The early volumes were available in Holland later volumes not and I didn't go to France for some years. It wasn't easy to compile a list of what had been issued. Over the years I filled the gaps of CD's missing that interested me. I did not need the whole series. Revival is not my thing. And I have the Hot five in various other formats etc.Two CD's eluded me so far 'Special Guitares vol. 2' and 'Americans in Paris vol. 7'. In all there are 81 issues. 79 in the regular series a sampler covering the first 26 CD's and a 2 CD set. 49 of these are in my collection. -

Me too. But the Hip-o-select site is no more. I couldn't find anything searching the Universal site. We must keep our fingers crossed.

Brian Rust Jazz Records
miles65 replied to tinpanalley's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I have the 5th and had the 6th. The 5th has the artists name on top of each page. The 6th hasn't. That makes a quick search a lot more difficult. A lot of takes that were issued after the 5th did not find there waty into the 6th. These are well known alternates like from the Ellington/Blanton duet session. The Armstrong instrumental takes discoverd in the 90's are mentioned only as 'test pressings' exist. From the 2 CBS 10 LP sets with the complete Columbia Count Basie output some 80 alternate takes are missing. On the other hand alternate takes from obscure blues sessions are included. I short I did not find the 6th an improvement over the 5th and sold it. I recomend Rust's 5th edition if you can locate it. At one point Mainspring Press announced they were going to do a 7th edition from scratch. This new editon was to cover the whole 78-era and to delete all non jazz recordings. But Mainspring press has the Brian Rust copyright for sale until December 1st. I have nothing against Mainspring Press. I love their Ragtime disco. -

The Quincy Jones big band and the Duke Ellington small groups sets are now on last chance. The Joe Pass and Oliver Nelson sets are now running low. -
For me it enhanches the set in the sense that with the alternates it is complete. The alternates are placed at the end of each disc so if you don't want to listen to them you can stop the disc when the alternates start.

This year there will be a Christmas special and next year a new series. http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-28123420

I love Basil Rathbone and also Jeremy Brett as Holmes. But this series is my favorite. Best instalment yet: 'A scandal in Belgravia'. But Moriarty is to me a whining teenager. Looking forward to the comming Chistmas special.

Maybe it took 10 years to spend the money from the first robbery.

This seems to be the best informed site about Lady Day. http://www.billieholiday.be/ It claims 12 takes are missing from this set.

Definitely.........and by association, the Carmell Jones Select. Yes! The Gerald Wilson set is definitely one of my favorite Mosaics. I listen to it often -- particularly discs 1 & 2. I didn't know this set is underrated. Certainly not by me. I love this set also particulary discs 1 & 2. Latino is one of my favorite tracks of all time.

New Lester Young set from Mosaic Records coming
miles65 replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
On June 3th 1938 Buck Clayton, Lester Young, Count Basie, Walter Page and Helen Humes recorded 8 tracks that were later partly used by Vanguard in their issue of the Spirituals To Swing Concert as if it was part of the concert. The concert was organised by John Hammond who worked for Columbia. Probably the session was recorded in a Columbia studio. -

Alas not complete. 'Song of the wanderer' is missing on the Vanguard set. It is included on the EPM disc Count Basie The golden years vol. 2 1938. That disc in turn misses 'Lady be good' -

Lester recorded twice with Guarnieri. One session under Lester's name for Keynote so that will be included. The other is under Johnny's name but for Savoy. There is no mention of Savoy. My guess is that the 2 Cd's worth of Savoy recordings won't be included. I hope they include the two instrumental takes takes of 'I've found a new baby' from the June 1st, 1937 Teddy Wilson session. And also the Commodore/Sony Kansas City Five session. It has neither Pres or Basie. But with Buck Clayton, Eddie Durham, Freddie Green, Walter Page and Jo Jones is it a Basie-ite session and I wouldn't know in what other set it would fit. .
