Sometimes the thread killing (off topic stuff that snowballs for infinity and turns into another thread basically)...or...(the jokey one-line stuff that goes back and forth between 2 or 3 jokesters using various smiley faces and derails the thread).... yes, it does get old. But....

I actually heard some of this over at Bob Belden's house about a year ago. He was trying to stump me, but couldn't when it came to soul jazz! Anyway, he played this for me and I said "I think that must be that unreleased Grant from the Mozambique." "Damn, I can't believe you got that!" he said. Sounded GREAT! Can't believe Blue Note hasn't released this stuff. Kicks "Alive"'s ass by a long shot.

I think Jimmy Smith's style was predominantly steeped in the blues.. He always played everything soulfully, often mixing blues influenced runs and phrases into his solos.. There was also bebop influences, but mostly blues.. Hmmm. I don't know Randy. I put on "Groovin' At Small's Paradise" or "The Boss" and hear a lot of very advanced harmonic sh*t going on in a way only Coltrane might could relate to. Jimmy could play the hell out of the blues and could bring the blues into his playing at anytime. Then again, he could shun the blues totally and go dancing in a harmonic wonderland all his own.

I haven't noticed anything at all. But please be advised, I've had the Political Forum blocked since it's inception. So I don't know what's going on there.

My thoughts exactly!

I was reading the Defrancesco interview where they asked what he was listening to...he said "Jimmy Smith, Live In Israel." Anybody ever hear of this?

...uh...actually don't have Jimmy Smith's "At The Lowry Organ." So I have them all but one.

Just curious, how many is that? Not sure how many that would be. My collection is scattered, totally unalphabetical, ect. I'd have to look at the allmusicguide to know actually.

Hope WKCR keeps going. Was blown away by the Billy Higgins memorial and have continued to tune in on the web since then (that was my initiation to the station as I was driving to NYC at the time). LOVE their memorials. And I actually liked Phil Schapp a lot on those memorial broadcasts. Don't know about ya'll, but down here our jazz programming is mostly lame and in 2-3 hour segments in a 24 hour cycle. A station like WKCR blows me away. Where else can I hear a LIFETIME perspective of music from Jimmy Smith the day I need it the most. Today. Hope they keep it up.

Now THAT's going to be a service! I was at John Patton's funeral and was in awe as I saw legend after legend walk by. Can't imagine the royalty paying homage at Jimmy's service.

I have no defense of myself. I have all the JOS the same way I have all the Patton and all the Freddie Roach, ect.... Obviously to the detrement of other types of jazz. But I was a fan first and a player later. So, I've been loving it a long time. I LOVE jazz organ, and since JOS was the king, how can you NOT have it all!

Just was listening to "Down By The Riverside" off the Dynamic Duo record with Wes (they were playing it on the Wkcr tribute).... anyway...Jimmy's BURNING on this thing. Flying, runs like you wouldn't believe. I'm thinking, oh Jimmy's really burning this F shuffle up! Then I check the key...he was burning it up in Eflat!!!! Maybe only another organist could appreciate this, but to burn the blues in Eflat like that on organ hasn't been done that much. Especially by Jimmy, his blues were almost always in F, G, C...Bflat was rare with him on a shuffle....but Eflat? No doubt that man could swing in Bnatural and you'd never guess. Pure genius.

I've actually got them all. (sorry, I'm a freak).

I don't know why, but I always got the impression that this material was widely overlooked. I would always talk about the AT THE ORGAN sessions on discussion boards (and I admit it was partially my sentimental attachment to Vol. 1, as mentioned above), but I always seemed to get a lot of "blank looks". They could only be had as TOCJ's for years, and I really wondered if people had checked them out! Obviously, THE SERMON sessions were star-studded and legendary, and Jimmy was prolific on BN, but this little tight little gem of a group with Lou, KB and Blakey has always deserved more props, IMO. Mosaic helped, of course. I hope a lot of people grabbed that set despite possibly already owning a lot of Jimmy. Yes, "AT THE ORGAN" is really some of my all-time favorite Jimmy Smith stuff. No doubt about it. "The Duel" must be about the wildest and most genius organ track ever cut.

AOTW Feb. 13 Jimmy Smith "Sermon/Houseparty"
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Album Of The Week
I believe you're thinking of "Houseparty" which is also included in the AOTW along with "The Sermon" since they're culled from the same 2 sessions of August 25, 1957 and Februray 25, 1958. I've since edited my original post to clarify it. -
Couldn't go to sleep last night. Lay in bed and listened to "Groovin' At Small's Paradise" for a long time. Still very, very hard to comprehend that I won't be seeing him play again.

The Album of the Week for Feb. 13th, 2005 is Jimmy Smith's "The Sermon" along with it's twin "Houseparty." In honor of the great king of the organ's passing. And just because it's simply one of the greatest jazz recordings in history. However, the original "The Sermon" album only contained 3 songs. "The Sermon" "JOS" and "Flamingo." On CD, Blue Note has mixed and matched the songs from "The Sermon" and "Houseparty" in various ways over the years since they come from the same 2 recording sessions of August 25th 1957 and February 25th 1958. So, I think it's fair to say all the songs from these two sister LPs are fair game. The songs from The Sermon and Houseparty include. The Sermon JOS Flamingo S'Wonderful Blue Room Lover Man Just Friends Confirmation Blues After All Au Privave

Coming to the end of the "Jazz Organ Era"
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous Music
As long as there is a Hammond organ left on this earth, there will be somebody trying to play like Jimmy Smith on it. -
Coming to the end of the "Jazz Organ Era"
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Oh yeah, forgot the great Johnny "Hammond" Smith passed away just a few years back as well. However, never did get a chance to see him. Would have loved that. -
Coming to the end of the "Jazz Organ Era"

So many have gone lately, that (unbelievabley) I left Charles Earland off the list. Amazing in a very, very sad way. -
When I first got into Jazz B3 in the mid 90's, most all of the great practitioners were alive and well. And eventually I got to see, meet, hang and talk to many of the all-time greats. With the passing of Jimmy Smith, makes me think the golden age of the jazz organist is really coming down to the wire. There's only a few of the great originators left now, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Reuben Wilson, Melvin Rhyne and Trudy Pitts. Gone since just the last couple of years are Jimmy Smith, Big John Patton, Brother Jack McDuff and Shirley Scott. If you can, PLEASE get out and see one of these last remaining legends in person. Thank God for Lonnie Smith, or I'd be REALLY depressed right now. Anybody else thankful?

uhhh...that's not jimmy.
