  1. Well, the gig doesn't pay that much.
  2. Yeah, I'd really like to hear more of Joey's account of his close relationship w/Jimmy this last year of his life. Sounds like a changing of the guard was at hand and Jimmy was perhaps handing the torch off.
  3. Don't worry Jim, there's no crossing the line here! (Plus, my wife's been out of town, so I don't think I got the gig that way. ) Wish I had a CD to lay on you guys, but I don't. Never much had the bread to do it, and the public hasn't really been demanding it!
  4. Yes, there's a new sheriff in town. B-)
  5. ...Hey...a little update..ended up keeping these gigs. The club owner just threw them my way.
  6. The Rudy DVD is just too damn short. At least an hour or 90 minutes should have been the goal. It's just cliff notes stuff which is a drag considering he's the last living connection to many of those sessions.
  7. Face To Face is widely considered his best work. However, all his LPs are musts for me. The Argos are great as well and show him off in another light. One album that doesn't get much credit is Here 'Tis his first recording ever. As a sideman with Lou Donaldson. It's perhaps my hidden favorite.
  8. yes, I really dig those live tapes. Gives a little insight into the daily club routine those guys did for decades. Great music and banter!
  9. That's my bud George Braith w/Larry and Roy Haynes. George also has a great picture of himself, Larry Young, Grant Green and Jack McDuff standing together that I've been trying to get from him for years now. If I ever get it, I'll post it.
  10. That's what I thought. But from Jimmy's account, Groove was out there really WAAAYYY before the pack. McGriff actually played alto sax in Groove's band. It was during that tenure that Groove sat down at the organ after a gig and showed McGriff how to play "Danny Boy." Groove was very instrumental in McGriff trying the organ. Even against Jimmy's will, Groove insisted. Of course, what's funny is that this exactly mirrored what would later become the McGriff/Earland relationship. Even down to the horn. Wierd.
  11. Yeah, I saw the last 10 minutes where he went on about how great it was that we were Westernizing muslim middle-east countries like Turkey. I guess being rich makes you dig the Bush doctrine no matter what. I like his views on music better. Still don't think he really wrote "Slop Around" like the Ray Charles movie depicts. "Yeah, play like James P. Johnson and sing about BBQ. There, I've just given you the Ray Charles style!"
  12. Pulled this out last night and listened as I went to sleep. Really cookin and relaxed. However, the organs do sound different from the usual B3 settings. Groove has his going straight into an amp w/a phase shifter it sounds like, plus he kicks on the wah-wah quite a bit which is a blast. McGriffs tone is a bit straighter, more of his amp-up Solid State sound. Perhaps he's running through a solid state leslie or something. Tone's kinda different but still super cool. ...Never realized this before but recently read an in-depth interview/article with McGriff. He said Groove Holmes was the main person who pushed him into playing the organ. Said Groove schooled him and encouraged him by letting him sit in, ect. This went on for a couple of years before McGriff really took to it and started to hit the clubs. Interesting.
  13. This is a GREAT freakin' record. They are playing Hammond B3s on the record...the organs on the cover are just props for the photo.... This is a KILLER record. It's like the Pall Mall thing without the slop (even though I love that too!). Seriously, it's more thought out songwise and really has a great sound to it with some nice tones comin' out of the boxes. There is some seriously COOKIN' sh*t on this record.
  14. I saw this on TRIO the other night and had to immediately go to the funky video store to see it again. Hands down one of the most interesting movies I've ever seen. Not to mention documentaries. Anybody else ever seen these wonderful film?
  15. Yes, I think I've been a threadkiller on my own thread.
  16. Awesome. Get it!
  17. Well, I'd love to...but she's outta town for work.
  18. I'm just glad my wife ain't a member of the Organissimo board.
  19. Now, if I can just get my Bi-atch out to hustle up some gigs too...
  20. Hey, my wife's pretty hot... Get out on the street HO!!!!! (complete w/pimp slap). Yeah, I'm beginning to feel the vibe. B-)
  21. Well, a lot of my organ trio gigs this last year have been as a sideman for a guitar player. Said guitar player just got hired by Bob Dylan, and now he's gone after this Thursday. My calender has been completey wiped. So, there goes half my income again in one fell swoop (this income blast happened to me last year as well under different circumstances).... Man, does hustling up gigs ever get any easier? I'm 'bout tired of the merry-go-round! Just when it gets going good, it inevitabley comes to a screeching halt. I'm happy for my buddy's great gig, but good news in the music business for someone always is bad news for someone else. Do the hustle.
  22. I saw him back up that actor who did his bobby darin schtick on larry king. Peter C. blew me away...he played his ass off, playing stride on one of the pieces.
  23. I wouldn't be so sure. That second song makes me think it might be him. He was in a transition period at this point where his style shifted somewhat. He might have been doing some different things he let go of, especially on that first cut. Of course it might have been someone like a Jimmy Ponder or Melvin Sparks- type who was very influenced by Grant. The guitar solos are so short and non-descript, it's just plain hard to tell.
  24. I really like this LP. Every song so far is a winner for me. Love hearing Larry in this context, sort of the Verve larger band stuff we got so much from Jimmy in the 60's. Except, sadly we're not hearing Larry for chorus after chorus. Would to have loved to hear Larry stretch out more on Hard Latin. Great song.
  25. Where are you guys hearing "Hard Latin?" Do you have the LP, or is that available on the web somwhere. The idea that Larry Young plays on this album has got to be news to the Young discography.
