  1. I saw the LP set of the Baker/Freeman Mosaic at a store recently for $125....wondered what the current value of the set was? Anybody buy/sell one recently?
  2. That's cool. It's not something I have to have, or anything. Just wondered what the title was and if it was something you could easily pick up. Thanks for the info.!
  3. Chet and Warne did an album together I read in a book today...anybody know of it...is it available on CD?
  4. I don't watch T.V. except on occassion for just 5-10 minutes or so. However, my wife and kids are slaves to the box and we usually have 3 T.V.s going with the volume on "10"...it really f'n annoys me.
  5. I think they should have bought the whole store and just re-opened it as if the last 30 years hadn't happened. "Hey Kids, we've got the hot new seller by the Kinks for ya!"
  6. It wasn't meant to be a single, because this was never released until the mid 90's. Great, great, great recording though. I wish it didn't fade, but maybe the ending was sloppy.
  7. I'm trying to convert a Mpeg4 file or rip a CD to an mp3 file. How is this done? I'm I this stupid? I thought a file on my ipod WAS an mp3 file?
  8. You're gonna love it Jim. It's just such a monster CD and the organ also SOUNDS so killer, the Dr. really gets some unbelievable registrations going on some of the cuts. I could go on and on, let's just say it's been great summer listening for me to say the least.
  9. If you haven't hear this recording, then I feel bad for you. Dr. Lonnie continues to amaze and inspire. Bringing organ jazz to new heights again and again.
  10. I've lived in the South so long, I don't even notice the sound...although I do enjoy it. However, if you ever get right up on one of those things when they make that sound it's loooouuuud as hell!
  11. I know "Sauce" a little bit. He used to come out to my gig occassionally when I played in San Antonio. Super nice guy and real supportive. I always asked him to sit in, but he said he hadn't played the bassline stuff in so long he didn't feel up to it. "Sauce" is a real San Antonio legend and garners a lot of respect in these parts. He plays "Funky Mama" and some other stuff like that on "The West Side Horns" CD which was put out on the Dialtone label. "Sauce" also played a pretty famous solo on the orginal "Talk To Me" I believe, although I could be wrong. Thanks for the feedback, Soul Stream. I'm pretty sure that Sauce Gonzales didn't play on Little Willie John's original "Talk To Me", but Sunny Ozuna, a Texas performer, did another hit version in the early 60's, and he could well have played organ on that one. I'll have to seek out that West Side Horns CD. Oh yeah, I'm sorry...I didn't mean to say the Little Willie John cut. It is the Sunny Ozuna one...
  12. I'm always interested to look at the changes in the Real Book to see how they compare to what I'm hearing. Sometimes, they'll add something I'm not hearing....and for that I'm always eager. However, I'm usually surprised at some of the stuff that's in there. No big deal. I'm self-educated and not a good reader anyway, I couldn't sit and get through a gig looking at Real Book if a gun was to my head. It's a good source, but I couldn't imagine trying to play tunes with that as my only, or near-only, guide. Recordings and your ears are really the best combination along with other player's input and guidance imho.
  13. Yeah, I have tried that. But I think this method is really a lot easier, more effective and cleaner overall since it's less of a hassle to avoid the mess in the first place than clean it up after the fact imho. Actually just takes seconds since most people have a hair dryer already plugged in and ready to go in the bathroom. I've always been bummed about buying a brand new RVG or $16 Conn. just to be wiping lighter fluid or goo-gone all over it the second I get it home. To anybody who has the same attitude, I would highly suggest trying this out as it leaves the CD and it's contents in mint shape and doesn't leave a lingering petroleum smell . Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now.

  15. I think this actually takes less time than going out and buying new jewel cases, breaking down the case, putting in the inserts, ect.... Unless you just hire your butler to do it...
  16. Happy Birthday!
  17. So it took me a few years, but I finally figured out the 100% sure and easy way to remove that sticky thing on top of a new CD. 1. Unhinge the CD case 2. Take the CD out 3. Take a hot hair dryer and stick it up close to that damn sticky thing for about 10 seconds until you see it getting kind of melty. 4. Peel off the f@#!!@ sticky thing...no problem 5. Put your CD back in the hinge the case together ....this really works great and is easy to do. I bought all the new RVGs today and did them all in just a few minutes and was glad to have nice, clean cases from a Blue Note product for the first time in years.
  18. A funny story about Rocky... A couple of friends of mine were in the backup band for The Westside Horns which were overseas somewhere. Rocky and the rest of the horn players were kind of a little lit up after the gig, they saw my buddies and said "Hey man, we didn't know ya'll were here too! We just got done playing, you should have seen us!" My friends then told them they were in the band and they had just played with them. RIP Rocky.
  19. Thanks again everybody for the good birthday wishes! Had a great day with the kids just hanging out at Barton Springs Pool, riding the Zilker Park mini-train and eating nachos.... Just finishing it off by listening to some Don Patterson before I watch a little Conan O'Brien and try and get to bed before 3a.m. for once.
  20. Thanks Ya'Ll. Had a great gig last night and looking forward to spending time with the kids today before they start school later in the week. Think I'll pick up "Another Workout" tommorrow to celebrate! Thanks to Jim, Randy and Joe...all the Organissimo Forum Members for another great year on the board!
  21. All Real Books should be thrown into a huge pile and burned "witch-style" (to rid us of all their evil-ness.) The times when I've referred to a Real Book, I've always come away wondering how they could totally over-inflate what's going on musically and get it wrong to boot. Lesson learned, use your ears and save yourself the trouble.
  22. Yeah, I guess this controversy will continue on for all time. That said, as much as I respect Bill Heid as a Young dicsiple....I can't imagine he would listen to that recording and say it was Patton. Especially given that the albums Big John made before and after that session bear no resembleance at all to the playing on Iron City. John told me it wasn't him, and I think for anyone who knows Big John's playing on a musical level, they would quickly identify that. The best evidence we have is our ears I think at this point. That's why Bill Heid's take is surprising to me as he's obviously an expert on Young.
  23. I don't know if I had said this before on this topic. But I also asked Ben Dixon, the only remaining survivor of the session who played organ just to get his recollection. "Larry Young!....Patton couldn't play like that!" At the time, I kind of took his statement as a slight slam on Big John, but....in retrospect I don't think he meant it like that.
  24. They (and all the other major and minor players) will all be remembered on a daily basis. Because, unlike even a century ago we have modern, great-sounding recordings of their work. There will be people listening to Joe Henderson and the like until the end 'o time....because, like all masterworks...it's timeless. Why are WE listening to 60's Larry Young? I mean, that's "old" stuff.
