  1. Yeah, I was a bit disappointed to find that out as I already had it. Although, I ain't complaining...
  2. Yeah, out of all the cats I've met on gigs over the years....he's one that made a strong impression as a seriously humble and honest guy that didn't have to be at all. That's so rare. Yeah, I always wondered what happened to that guy. Never knew until you mentioned him Jim. Best of luck to his career. Let me know what you think of his stuff. I bet you will dig...dig?
  3. My organ trio opened a show a few years back for Bernie Worrell. Bernie dug it and came out with about 3 tunes organ/trio style....caravan, ect. In his band on that gig was Amp Fiddler. Amp gave me his number and was super cool, wanted to take organ lessons and get together next time he was in town (hey, ask Bernie for some organ lessons I told him!) Anyway, a SUPER talented and humble dude. I never saw or talked to him again, but was excited to see an album of his on the DG website today. If it's his solo stuff, it's GOT to be good. He's a killer musician.
  4. Yeah, this stuff is mind blowing.
  5. Picked up a handful of the Jazz Icon DVDs that came out today. Holy Cow. Dizzy and Stitt singing "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" together with pure joy. (Sonny's KILLING on this...plays all but one song on Tenor!) Chet Baker....some of the best stuff ever on film. Him singing Time After Time as well as anything he ever cut in his early years...blowing his heart out with cool melodicism. The interview and playing in 79 is VERY good stuff. Just checking the Blakey right now...he makes an announcement and seems half-baked...band is killin'.
  6. I guess it all depends on how deep you're into Kynard. I'm a Kynard fan and have this CD and enjoy it. Good session. Is it one of the greatest organ sessions ever? Probably not, but a good strong date. I wouldn't consider it a session where the musicians are really stretching beyone the usual soul-jazz boundaries.
  7. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of his stuff with Wes and the pre-Criss Cross years. I think the stuff he did later in life really blew away everything else he did. Usually, it's the other way around. Not with Melvin Rhyne. He's getting better and better...
  8. Over the years, Melvin Rhyne has increasingly become one of my all-time favorite organists. His recordings for Criss Cross are some of the best pure jazz organ recordings ever done. If you're not real hip to Mel, pick up any of his Criss Cross releases and get in on the secret...Melvin's the unsung hero.
  9. Yes, I'm still hoping at some point and live tape of that trio will surface. I just can't imagine someone didn't record a group that was working that consistently for so many years in the heyday of jazz. There's got to be a recording somewhere.
  10. 1967 and 1968 were great years for auctioneers. Those guys were my favs.... thanks for showing us this.
  11. Yeah, it's one of the top 10 classic jazz organ lps...no doubt. I love the new RVG...brings out a lot in the organ that went unheard on the previous old issue CD.
  12. I got a 147 amp recently that had been converted to a 122. It was done in Philadelphia. My techs down here for years claimed it was near impossible to do, blah blah blah. Just goes to show Philadelphia knows their organ stuff, and just about everwhere else doesn't.
  13. Cool!. I'm not familiar with the 47 although I assume it's the 147's predecessor. It has 2 louvers at the top unlike a 21...which is interesting to me. Awesome Jim!
  14. Yeah, Bill seems to be the only man in existence who can sit down and play piano like Otis Spann one minute and then turn around and burn like Larry Young on organ the next. How he's been able to master so much in a lifetime is beyond me. And like Randy says, he sings too. One guy shouldn't be able to have that much talent! Count me as a big fan. I dig his "Wet Streets" CD quite a lot and just had it in the car last week, since I haven't listened to it in a long time. He's a neglected master for sure.
  15. I actually love Lee's version of Midnight Cowboy. I've got it on the Blue Note comp. "Blue Scores".... Really, really beautiful. I can't find anything not to like about this recording.
  16. Great shots. His story still blows me away. He must be the happiest guy on earth again.
  17. While The World Lies Waiting is my favorite cut on this album. Reuben has such a happy and uplifting style on the organ. Although I think "Love Bug" and "Blue Mode" are both better albums...I think Groovy Situation has Reuben's personal best playing from this era. I'm a real Reuben Wilson fan. *however, I do HATE the drummer on this session. Plodding. Never moving anything along. Just digging coal the whole time. Poor Reuben is dragging this guy along the whole session.
  18. I really dig Ponder's playing on Lou Donaldson's "Mr. Shing-A-Ling" as well. Check him out on that, you'll dig it.
  19. That's wild Michael! Cool to know that some of the material from this LP made the 'rounds at the clubs. Mike LeDonne told me he used to play "Oh Baby" as well with Joe Dukes since it was a real favorite of Joe's. Great songs on this LP. I know I've said it before on the forum, but....John Patton told me "Oh Baby!" and "Along Came John" were his two favorite LPs he made.
  20. I guess I'm the odd man out on this. I find this to be one of my favorite 60's organ sides. Bob Cranshaw and Idris Muhammed really lock in on this and the Shirley/Stan thing is really relaxed and happening imho. Plus, I really like how this session sounds. Nice job by RVG cutting the tracks.
  21. One of my all time favorite 60's funk/boogaloo outings. They swing the hell out of "Blowin' In The Wind"...and that ain't easy!
  22. Put on "Each Time" and listen to what a great organist Patton was.
  23. I started collecting Blue Note and Prestige 45's about 10 years ago when you could get mint, unplayed ones for $1.00. NOBODY seemed to care about these records. I really dug them and still do. I mostly have organ 45s....John Patton, Freddie Roach, Jimmy Smith, ect. The ones I have are edited down versions of the lp cut. They sound great....really loud and "in your face". Plus it's interesting to see where they edited and who's solo went on the cutting room floor.
