  1. Sad, sad, sad. Was he in Oakland? I was just listening to him with Wes and Monk yesterday. Well, at least I got to play with him a few times in '91 when he played the Parker Meridian for a while. I can verify what the other guy said, he was very nice. What a great family. Well, they did their thing and won't be forgotten. Bye, Buddy. i'm SO grateful i got to enjoy all three brothers over the years!! i think Buddy was around the Simi Valley area with family. not sure.
  2. oh, i am so, so, so sad about this! he was such a sweetheart. i knew he had been struggling for quite awhile. what a loss.
  3. gee, and here i was thinking that it's a godsend! just as an aside, your picture of Clifford Jordan is far more attractive to me!
  4. really? in 2006 at age 71, sophia still looks attractive to me. did i mention that she was featured in the 2007 pirelli calendar? different strokes for different folks, robviti. and three years can make a difference as well. i saw her on the Academy Awards this year. p.s. and for a woman in her 70s showing off her man-made boobs is absolutely ridiculous to me!
  5. TOUCHE, TedR!! Dolly Parton, too, as a matter of fact! it also pained me deeply to recently see Sophia Loren looking like a female impersonator with the wig, plastic surgery, makeup, etc., etc. these folks sure don't know how to age gracefully!
  6. i think she's pathetic. only the guys seem to be impressed. most of the ladies know better! she's all about plastic surgery from her wig to her toes. and i'm one who has always thought her talent was very minimal. sorry but not really. and i actually used to think she had a great look before she started messing with it.
  7. oh, this is horrible news but i will tell you, Steve, that i held my breath until i didn't read your name!!!! thank "all the powers that be" that they didn't cut the best jazz dj on the East Coast or probably anywhere, for that matter. the only positive thing i have to add to the lousy news is that i really, really like Bob Parlocha, even though it's always a pre-recorded show. he knows his stuff and has a very easy/natural style. unfortunately for me, he's on during hours i don't often listen to my radio but when i do, i thoroughly enjoy him. these are such scary times for jazz and for us, in general!
  8. i love Branford and just about anything he does. he fuses everthing with his distinct personality as well.
  9. Huh? Sorry if I offended you, Valerie. I really didn't intend for my post to be disrespectful. I should just keep my pre-pubescent reminiscences to myself, I guess. That being said, you probably shouldn't click on Sangrey's link. certainly no personal offense taken. was just kind of (tongue-in-cheek) putting myself in Bea's shoes for a minute. i know she could get quite nasty and didn't often hold her tongue! and, no, i'm not even tempted to click on that link!
  10. Free for All and Dan Gould just sorta proved my point!
  11. i'll bet Maude would be furious that this is appearing on the second page of her RIP thread!
  12. my favorite seats are up the steps at the tables next to the railing. in other words, no seats there will put your back to the stage!
  13. Look forward to seeing you guys. Valerie, Just to prevent any further confusion: David Weiss Michael Weiss i shall not make the mistake again but based on the pictures, i'd sure like to meet you!!!
  14. Hurrah! so glad this is finally happening!! good for you, Michael!! SO sorry for the original error!! please forgive!!
  15. if he makes it, David, will you try to introduce us? i'd like to meet Mark. xoxo valerie
  16. Happy Birthday and a special thank-you for all you do to enrich our jazz world!
  17. sadly, i, too, was under the impression that Rudy passed away in the past few years. i remember him as being a very gentle, nice man.
  18. free concert at the L.A. County Museum with Supersax! haven't heard them in (maybe) decades!
  19. i am only familiar with Rudolph Johnson through his Black Jazz album in the '70s. i actually saw Doug Sides at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2007. he was playing with Kirk, Reggie Johnson and Johnny Griffin. i believe Doug has been living in Europe for many years now. wonder if anyone knows if Rudolph is around any more?
  20. most definitely continuing to send positive thoughts your way. i'll bet you need to get some sleep too!!
  21. i have obviously been unaware of recent (un)happenings around here but am very sorry to read this post. in fact, i am really surprised, to say the least. however, i look forward to staying in touch with you, Chris. best, valerie
  22. apparently he was a very good teacher. at least that's what i remember hearing in the '60s.
  23. thanks to both Larry and JSngry for the info. i didn't remember that Hall Overton died so young. i asked about the son because his name was so familiar to me. now i know why!
  24. i'm assuming Mrs. Overton was much younger than her husband who died in the '70s. does anyone know the occupation of their son, Rick? my ex-husband studied with Hall Overton in NY during the '60s.
