  1. i remember exactly where i was standing in my apt. in Venice when i heard the news!!
  2. cannot possibly give a strong enough "Amen" to that!!
  3. what an incredible battle he waged! he surely deserves to rest in peace.
  4. pretty darn funny, Allen. yeah, a conservative, Christian school named after Art would probably make him roll over if anything!!
  5. tix are too expensive. priced for the "rich folks".
  6. got my copy at a local newstand in L.A. as much as Lou has a firm foothold on his place in jazz history, i think his comments were "ignorant" and totally mean-spirited. what kind of person spouts off like that to kids interested in jazz?!? and it seems pretty clear that he must be starved for some attention these days. i think he made a fool of himself in that interview. he got "fooled" too after being extremely emphatic when he thought he was listening to Cannonball.
  7. Lou Donaldson's "record reviews" cracked me up, big-time! many of the ads for jazz festivals were already outdated! it was a pretty thin issue.
  8. i was absolutely strung out on her in the '50s (when i was very young!) and continued to love her singing for many decades. very sorry to hear this news.

    Eddie Higgins

sorry to report that Eddie is in need of strong healing thoughts and prayers right now as he is facing some major medical challenges.
  10. although i've never been a fan of Sade's, i've actually wondered what happened to her. all her songs sounded the same to me but she is a beautiful woman.
  11. i used to love to listen to Julius with Mingus. he was always a sweetheart as well.
  12. yes, Buddy definitely seemed to be enjoying himself. he conducted the band from his wheelchair in the audience close to the stage. he was mobbed with well-wishers, gifts, cards, flowers, balloons, big birthday cake, etc. so many of his family members were there: his "kids," grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Buddy's mind is still sharp as a tack and he can still talk his ass off as well! lots of very valuable information in his head and he loves to share it. Wow, was it a public event? Sorry I missed it. I did go to some of the World Stage Jazz Festival yesterday but left too early from that. But it didn't seem like it was part of that. yes, it was open to the public and took place at Catalina's in Hollywood, starting with brunch. good music too played by talented musicians who love Buddy. i usually attend the World Stage Festival but unfortunately had to go to work after Buddy's Brunch! especially wanted to see Bertha Hope with Tootie Heath, et al., and Phil Ranelin's group.

  14. went to his 88th birthday bash yesterday. he is so amazing and some wonderful musicians paid tribute to him, musically and verbally. he is a treasure!
  15. This is an incredible opportunity for some one (or two) people: Billie Holiday, 1955 NYC, 14 x 16, 11/50, framed Lester Young, 1955 NYC, 14 x 16, 2/50, framed Please send me a PM if you have any interest. The prices will be amazing!
  16. blessings to Frank! haven't seen/heard him since the last NY IAJE mtg. when he received the NEA award.
  17. I tend to agree with this sentiment, but then again, think of the tens of millions of dollars that he likely paid in taxes to LA. I may be wrong about that though as perhaps he didn't pay to LA proper. the City is not going to shoulder the total expense. supposedly, they will get help from AEG, the Jackson family and from other public and private donations.
  18. if it weren't for your comment about concert sales, i probably wouldn't have voted for the one with the guys. sorry but i really just like graphics and not pictures. also, i have never purchased a brown t-shirt in my life. i guess this might have to be the first time. have you considered another color?!? thanks for listening.
  19. just heard them a couple of weeks ago and they were wonderful.
  20. glad you enjoyed one of our favorite sons in L.A., Gerald Clayton. he's been developing into a fantastic musician and he's still a young man. Brian Blade, indeed, is one of the most incredible drummers around. i never tire of hearing/watching him. hope the Branford Marsalis Quartet is as good as they were a few years ago! they were magnificent at the Monterey Jazz Festival. enjoy and thank you for sharing with us.
  21. which reminds me that i believe Ms. Lena is 92 years old today! i don't believe the public has seen her in a long time.
  22. i also was in his company in the '70s but mostly at his Club in L.A. he was a funny, totally wild guy but most everyone already knew that!
  23. It's my recollection that he admitted to sleeping with young boys. He just denied molesting them when he was in bed with them. That's enough to make me disregard whatever talent he had, and whatever music he created. That and the fact that he paid millions of dollars to the family of the boy, who then refused to testify in the criminal case. No, we can't claim to know, but the circumstantial evidence sure seems to suggest it pretty clearly. that Chandler boy has admitted that he lied years ago and was forced to do so by his father who wanted to make some $$$!!!!!!!!!!
  24. how many concerts will be cancelled on this world tour?
