  1. back in the '60s and later, i don't remember any musicians selling their albums at their gigs. i do, however, remember many a fan bringing albums to gigs to be signed. i also vaguely remember the details in a story that orrin keepnews told about the musicians doing deliveries (off the truck!) to record stores, especially up in harlem. also to harlem barber shops!!
  2. i had no idea he was so ill. always enjoyed his posts. obviously he was a very special person. i am especially saddened for his family and friends. this holiday season will not be easy for them. hope they find out that a lot of people they probably never heard of enjoyed and appreciated their loved one.
  3. wishing you a very happy, healthy one!
  4. the subtitle of this thread needs to be changed. he wasn't "found ill". that comes from the headline, "founder" (of atlantic records) ill.
  5. yes, this is incredibly sad. he's been in a coma ever since the fall occurred which has been quite a number of weeks now. it occurred at a rolling stones concert.
  6. i grew up with ms. gibbs's music, loved her and knew all the words to all her songs! thank you and RIP.
  7. here's to many more happy and healthy years for mr. tyner. he is the absolute best in my book! i heard some big band stuff of his this morning and it was thrilling! i've been a fan of his for about 40 years!
  8. as you know, it really had very little importance, so there's no problem at all! best, valerie
  9. yes, i had forgotten that. thanks, bertrand.
  10. do folks here know that lee's nickname was "howdy doody"?!? don't know how he came by it and am wondering if it's mentioned in the book.
  11. i've really been enjoying it too! very glad it has been nominated.
  12. there was a thread about him not that long ago but i don't remember if it was here or at jazzcorner or allaboutjazz. the most recent news i've heard was that he continues to be at a facility in new jersey. i think his mental problems are worse than his medical problems. very sad.
  13. yes, i'm canceling my amazon order and going to order from the publisher. thanks muchly.
  14. i ordered this book on november 12, with great hopes that i would have it by now. today i received an e-mail telling me that the new shipment estimate is jan. 8-22, 2007!! what a bummer!
  15. i didn't really know him. i just miss his talent as a player and composer.
  16. and i miss him lately more than ever!
  17. well, i, for at least one, will give you a round of applause, fwiw! i like what you've said and agree. just a "trivia question" though: monday's step-father is jewish. that wouldn't be termed "anglo," would it? also, from what i remember, monday was born in japan but came to the states as a baby. i don't think she returned to japan to live until she was maybe in her 20's.
  18. That's a very nice piece. I never knew he did stuff like that. Thanks for posting it, Val. MG you obviously had the same reaction as i had when first seeing the blog! someone from bookie's family hipped me to it or i would have missed out.
  19. Warm Memories of Bookie: http://rain-people.blogspot.com
  20. Also saw Walter on one other occasion in a Cannonball Adderley tribute at the Playboy Fest in LA. If my memory is right this one had Roy McCurdy and George Duke completing the rhythm team. Nat Adderley was scheduled to play but was sadly wheelchair bound after illness (he very graciously came on stage for the duration of the performance though). yes, i remember that concert well. nat, however, was never expected to play as he was far too ill at that time.
  21. i remember well when that was recorded. bookie accompanied his then wife, maria, on the guitar when she sang dindi. she was very pregnant with their son, krishna and broke down and cried on that tune and they kept it in!
  22. Memorial Information for Bookie The "Celebration of a Life" Memorial Service for Walter M. Booker, Jr. will be held as follows: Sunday, January 14, 2007 at 7:30 P.M. Saint Peters Lutheran Church 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street New York, NY 10022 (212) 935-2200
  23. i absolutely loved this man. i am indebted to him for some of the most memorable moments for me in film. thank you, thank you, mr. noiret. there will never be another like you.
  24. bookie was my friend mostly in the '60s and '70s although i saw him a few years ago and from time to time. i have many wonderful memories of these years. he was sweet, charming, warm and totally fun-loving. and, of course, last but not least, a very talented musician. he gave his all to every performance. he was married to a friend of mine for years and they produced a magnificent son who is at this moment touring with sergio mendes. my best memories are during the years bookie was with cannonball. whether it was in ny, l.a., s.f., we partied hearty! i often reminisce with zawinul, george duke or roy mccurdy, who i plan to see tonight to celebrate his 70th birthday. we all loved bookie. you couldn't help but love him. he had all the attributes of the loving saggitarius he was. i'm sure he's already got the party started up there! party, on, my friend.
  25. she was a very special and talented lady. i will always remember her as i'm sure many will. her nephew in the l.a. area writes a jazz column.
