  1. I dunno about a 'comeback', even if Sly were capable of one. These things are almost always a letdown. I'm just happy the guy's still alive.
  2. That set hasn't been 'Complete' for a while; I believe the 2CD versions of 'Coltrane' and 'Ballads' includes material discovered since the box came out including a studio take of 'Impressions', IIRC.

I think strictly speaking, the bass clarinet should be thought of as a baritone instrument... There is a clarinet in between 'regular' clarinet and bass, the bassett horn. See here Edit: For some reason, this link doesn't take you straight to the page. Scroll down and click on 'Back to the Clarinet family' and follow the link from there...
  5. August 25th- 1975: Milt Jackson with Joe Pass & Ray Brown- The Big Three (Pablo) 1978: (25th- 29th) Albert Mangelsdorff with Wolfgang Dauner, Eddie Gomez & Elvin Jones- A Jazz Tune I Hope (MPS) 1991: Miles Davis, a version of 'Hannibal' from his final concert performance at the Hollywood Bowl- Live Around the World (Warner Bros)
  6. Indeed; the 17th and 21st recordings had Nick Stabulas in for Elvin on drums of course. Looking at the reissue again, I notice there's a facsimile of the original LP sleeve which lists the 29th. Wonder how that Aug 24th date originated?
  7. There's a story that Roland Kirk held a note one night at Ronnie Scott's for two hours and 27 seconds but was denied the record for some reason. Joel Dorn wrote a KG-dissing liner note in the reissue of one of Kirk's CDs.
  8. Circular sucking?!
  9. I've seen the August 24 date listed for this but the 3CD reissue gives August 29.
  10. August 24th- 1928: Bessie Smith records for Columbia 1959: (24th & 25th) Andre Previn with Shelly Manne & Red Mitchell- West Side Story (Contemporary) 1964: Tony Williams- two titles for Lifetime (Blue Note)
  11. Wittgenstein? ← Close. But no... er... cigar.
  12. August 23rd- 1928: Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra (including Earl Hines) records for Vocalion 1958: Dave Brubeck- Jazz Impressions of Eurasia (Columbia) 1994: (23rd- 25th) Thomas Chapin- You Don't Know Me (Arabesque)
  13. I'm gonna have to think about this...
  14. It's going to get Schaapped on?
  15. I think we're all in shock...
  16. 17. Damn! Forgot about this BFT idea... Too late to get in on this Noj?
  18. My copy of Diz and Getz used to be easy... It sat at the end of Stan Getz, which was also the beginning of Dizzy Gillespie. -_- That worked until I bought a Terry Gibbs CD, which screwed the whole thing up. Oh, and surely the Massey Hall concert gets filed under 'Charlie Chan'?
  19. August 20- 1930: Duke Ellington records for Victor 1945: Woody Herman records for Columbia 1962: Bill Evans with Shelly Manne & Monty Budwig- Empathy (Verve) 1979: Joe Henderson with Chick Corea- session for Relaxin' at Camrillo (Contemporary)
  20. That's not such a great song. It's all about his image.

    Evan Parker

Just stumbled upon this... not had the chance to read it myself yet but it looks interesting. Evan Parker
  23. I always thought Rouse was okay... But as I implied earlier, once I started to dig into Monk's repertoire I appreciated Rouse's playing from a whole different perspective. He may not make sparks fly, but make no mistake, the guy's a master!
