  1. Last nite at The Nash Jazz Club in Phoenix,AZ my wife and I attended a great performance. A Tribute To Charlie Parker with- (the great) Charles McPherson, Terell Stafford, Bruce Barth, Peter Washington and Lewis Nash. All five musicians were in top form The 82 year old McPherson plays every tune with great intensity and passion. He was awarded a special plaque by Lewis Nash for his excellent playing and, his jazz education endeavors. McPherson has composed a jazz suite for the San Diego Ballet, and he performed one of the pieces from that suite last nite. The club was filled to capacity last night and the audience was exuberant in their reaction to the music.
  2. Cherubini - String Quartet No.4 in E major and Benjamin Godard - Piano Trio No.1, Op.32
  3. I read this book before the Ted Gioia book came it. The Gordon book was published in 1986. It was, as best I can recall, the first book focused on West Coast Jazz. I spent some time with the author Robert Gordon while attending some of the Jazz Weekend in Los Angeles put on by Ken Poston in the early 2000's. Gordon was both a knowledgable and very nice guy. I found the Gordon book highly enjoyable when I read it 30 odd years ago.
  4. Beethoven - Op.18/3 and Chopin - Piano Concerto No.1 (arr. for piano and string quintet)
  5. Dan, Here are a couple more I enjoy.
  6. Mozart - Piano Quartet No.1, K.478 and Dvorak - String Quartet No.9, Op.34
  7. Good choices Dan. My picks for non-BN Mobley from the 50's would be these two that also have Doug Watkins.
  8. String Quartet No,2, Op.35 & Piano Quintet Op.51
  9. Andy Martin
  10. Yes, I agree with what everyone has said. A truly marvelous recording. Have loved it since I got the LP when first issued way way way back in the day.
