He does look a bit like Roy Brooks to me. Growing up in Detroit at the time when so much was happening there I recall the "early" young Roy Brooks. He was in his learning and developing period and always wanted to sit in with the local cats at gigs. His playing was not at the level he attained a few years later. He later became one of my favorite drummers. His recordings with Horace Silver, Sonny Stitt and others was to my ears outstanding.

Warne having a sense of superiority to the bebop guys was a surprise to me. I had the sense that Warne was a kind of laid back somewhat taciturn, maybe shy kind of guy. Guess I was wrong?

Sonny Stitt was on the tall side but also played tenor. James Moody who also played both alto and tenor was somewhat short. interesting that it seems Stitt played alto more than tenor, while Moody played more tenor than alto.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

I agree with Jlhoots. I would add is that the trio played more compositions by Barron and Holland than I would have expected. They performed one tune by Billy Strayhorn (Day Dream), and a bebop tune the title of which I can't recall. For an encore the trio played "Bud Walked In" by Monk. No Great American Songbook standards were played. This is the first time I have seen Nasheet Waits, the son of Freddie Waits, and he did a terrific job. I saw Kenny Barron a few times some years ago. At that time his trio consisted of Ray "Bulldog" Drummond, and Ben Riley. -
