  1. I have seen / heard Houston Person live many many times. He plays ballads beautifully. That big round sound can grabs me in a good way. He is also a terrific blues player. he can get greasy and often is able to bring a large smile to my face. On up tempo tunes, there are many other (living) tenor players I prefer, but when he comes ballads and blues he is (in my opinion, one of the best.
  2. I agree with Larry that the recordings made for the Xanadu label show Sam Most at his best. I am also not a big fan of most jazz flute playing, but Most has long been a favorite of mine. The one Xanadu CD by Most that has been reissued on CD is titled "Mostly Flute". Joining Sam on this very good session are Tal Farlow, Duke Jordan, Sam Jones & Billy Higgins.
  3. I tend to prefer Jarrett's ballads on his many Standards albums. Though he plays the faster tempos well, it is the ballads that reach me more deeply.
  4. Personally my favorite Freddie Redd recording is - Shades Of Redd - which I have in the Mosaic set. I find Freddie's writing is more effective when there are horns in the group. Also, on that session Jackie McLean and Tina Brooks make up an ideal lineup to play Redd's compositions. I like all of Freddie's recordings, though his Sweden sessions and earlier Prestige material strike me as having fewer of the distinctive Redd qualities that I hear a bit later in his playing and writing.
  5. Yes, Nimmons has played an important role in jazz in Canada. Too bad he is not well known by jazz listeners in the USA and other countries.
  6. I have a large number of CDs by Pieranunzi as leader as well as sideman. Here are some i particularly like. Special Encounter - Cam Jazz Ballads - Cam Jazz Live In Paris - Challenge Infant Eyes - Challenge Alone Together - Challenge New Lands - Timeless Charlie Haden - Silence - Soul Note Charlie Haden - First Song - Soul Note Lee Konitz & Enrico Pieranunzi - Solitudes I should also indicate that there have been a few Pieranunzi recordings that I didn't care for and disposed of after listening to them a couple of times.
  7. I use my iPad here far more than my desktop computer. Your signing in issue is not something I face.
  8. As an "older" jazz listener, I had the Flying Fish LP when it was first available. No longer have it, as I disposed of most of my very large LP collection years ago. May decide to get it when available on CD.
  9. Very tragic news. I am pleased that I had the opportunity to see Mulgrew perform live in a few different settings. Once as a solo pianist, another time in a trio , and most recently here in Tucson with his group that included vibes, 2 horns, bass and drums. Jazz has lost a master musician.
  10. One of my favorite living jazz pianists. Hope he recovers and is able to return to the keyboard.
  11. I will be getting a copy.
  12. I had the original LP issues of both that I bought when they were first released. Sold them years ago when I switched to CDs. Currently have the Fresh sound of "The Message", and a Bainbridge copy of "In Action".
  13. "Paradise Squat" by Count Basie from the 1950's Verve Studio Recordings reissued on Mosaic
  14. I have quite a number of CDs with Bernt Rosengren as leader or sideman. As Leader Summit Meeting - Dragon Late Date : A Tribute To Lars Gullin - Mirrors Inside Pictures : A Tribute To Lars Gullin, Vol.II - Mirrors Surprise Party - Steeplechase As A Sideman with a Significant Role Maffy Falay Sextet - Hank's Time - Liphone Doug Raney Sextet - Meeting The Tenors - Criss cross Doug Raney Quintet - Cuttin' Loose - Steeplechase Doug Raney Quartet - Listen - Steeplechase Doug Raney Quintet - I'll Close My Eyes - Steeplechase Doug Raney Quintet - Lazy Bird - Steeplechase Arne Domnerus - Face To Face - Dragon Sideman with a Small Role Nils Lindberg - Saxes Galore/Brass Galore - Bluebell Lars Gullin - Bluesport - EMI Odeon Lars Gullin - Aeros Aromatic Atomica Suite - EMI Odeon
  15. Yes, Starker' s Bach Cello Suites and Sonatas are very good. His recordings of Cello Concertos by Schumann, Lalo, and Saint-Saens are also top notch.
  16. I checked a wide variety of albums where he is either leader or sideman. They all referred to him as Sonny Red. Perhaps you are thinking of the two d's in the female alto sax player Vi Redd?
  17. Am currently listening to Yevgeny Sudbin playing Haydn on a recently acquired disc on the BIS label. So far, I find it highly enjoyable.
  18. I have two SACDs by the Amsterdam String Quartet playing Haydn on historical Instruments on the Channel Classics label. Both of these discs are, to my ears, very very good.
  19. I have long enjoyed Jack Montrose's Pacific Jazz and Atlantic albums, but never cared for this RCA session. Found it rather dull. Montrose made a much later CD on the Holt label. He is joined on this one by Bill Watrous, Pete Jolly, Chuck Berghofer and Nick Martinis. All the tunes on this 1990 date were written by label owner David Jack Holt. It is ,in my view, an interesting CD.
  20. I have a cd of George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra playing great orchestral highlights from the Ring series. Though I am no Wagner buff, I like this disc very much.
  21. I bought my Grumiaux / Klien box quite a few years ago when the price was very reasonable. I just checked Amazon and see what you mean about the crazy prices for that set. Have not heard the Grumiaux / Haskil set so am unable to make a comparison.
  22. I have the Grumiaux /Walter Klien 4 CD Box on Philips It would be difficult, in my opinion, to find a better set than that.
  23. I need to put in a good word for a trumpet player I greatly admire - Bill Hardman. The vast majority of his recordings were on other labels, though he was sideman on a Hank Mobley and a Lou Donaldson session on Blue Note. Hardman's playing on the Mobley album, which also includes Sonny Clark, is particularly good. But if forced to select my one favorite on Blue Note, it would be Kenny Dorham.
  24. I like Clifford Jordan a lot. He has made a great many fine recordings. Here are some of my favorites. The Adventurer - 32 Jazz Mosaic - Milestone Live At Ethell's - Musical Heritage Two Tenor Winner - Criss Cross Cliff Craft - Blue Note
  25. Think that was "Red Alert." Nice one. I also like that one. It was back in the period when I found Chris Potter's playing to my taste. That is rarely any longer true.
