  1. Interesting post. I think the creator of that video, uses the fact he lacks technique to play something in a "free" context and prove anyone can do it. I think he'd be surprised to learn that even Brotzmann, one of his favs, listens to tons of inside stuff like, Hawk. Brotzmann often sounds to me like if Hawk was a free player, if you know what I mean, tone wise, at least.
  2. the open horn was............. not even Miles sounded that bad!
  3. yeah, I don't have the energy to get into a flame war with a faceless YT'er
  4. exactly. I looked at the guy's profile he lists every interest to be "different" when he's like 20 million other ppl. Cuong Vu does what this person does a million times better. It's FRESH to him, not seasoned fans.
  5. wow his page hasn't been updated since the late 90's when I visited.
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zARk737as8k isn't this guy getting it all wrong? The stuff he's playing has been around for 40 years too. Isn't it kind of crazy to say avant garde stuff is fresher than straight ahead because straight ahead guys play in a style created 40 years ago? So has this stuff.
  7. I only know those who like it a little or not at all. Not even the local jazz musicians are as into it as me.
  8. Are these legal releases? They don't look sanctioned by Columbia/Legacy
  9. damn, RIP. The Jones' are together again. He was truly one of the most consistent pianists.
  10. Same here though I still collect a lot of artists I love, Blakey, Silver, Metheny, Corea, Hutcherson, Mehldau, DeJohnette, Garrett. I buy albums of various people where a configuration interests me, i.e. the new David Sanborn.
  11. the One Night With Blue Note is my favorite version of the song.
  12. Binghamton is very boring. The jazz scene is local guys who play Real Book charts, and outside of the tragic American Civic Association shooting last year, not much happens here in way of violence. Mostly domestic issues in the poorer parts of Binghamton and Endicott.
  13. Indeed. I heard them at SUNY Binghamton fall 1973. Very intense, wonderful music. As I recall, it was one continuous improvisation that was nearing 2 hours...when, in the lobby of the building, right outside the concert hall, there was a shooting (a murder!). The alarms sounded and the building was evacuated. As we stood outside the building, I heard one person say to another, "that was the only way that concert could have ended." Really? a shooting? I'm a Bing alum from 2005. Sounds like it will be a cool set.
  14. I bought a copy and am listening now. I agree with Jeff, I feel Holland's tunes with this band and quintet have this thing, very ostinato based, elements of funk, Latin, sort of winding harmonies. I guess the word is he's so consistent these days it's hard to find something that stands out.
  15. cover definitely has a Tom Hannan esque look to it
  16. I'm not selling mine, hehe
  17. Bought mine 12 years ago.
  18. used original CD pressing of JOS "Go For Whatcha Know". I used to have this on vinyl.
  19. Trane, Prez, Johnny Griffin, maybe Lee Morgan, fire to balance things.
  20. yeah, I think the first Jazzmatazz.
  21. RIP, an important force combining jazz and hip hop viably IMO
  22. they sound really great.
  23. Randy are you using Aquarian heads on that kit like Jack?
