How did you 'hear' about the Organissimo.org forums?
Hot Ptah replied to eeegor's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It might be because AAJ is given some publicity in magazines such as 'Jazzwise'. I much prefer the 'underground' feel of this place tho'. It's like a Dutch Fontana to AAJ's CBS! AAJ as CBS? AAJ is far too small and underfunded to be a CBS, as far as I can tell. Does Organissimo really seem so much more "bohemian" than AAJ? I don't see that difference myself. Now Jazz Corner, that place seems like a different world to me. -

Not to my recollection. Now THAT should qualify as the single most humorous post of 2007! Thanks, I enjoyed that. Geez............... Now are you pissed off at me too? No, no. I just thought that your post was masterfully understated, truly humorous. -

It can be a little rough there sometimes. Oh, did you ever get into any contentious discussions with anyone there? -
Miles - On the Corner and Beyond
Hot Ptah replied to Aggie87's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It is noteworthy that the box ends with studio recordings by the group in which Sam Morrison has replaced Sonny Fortune. I have been underwhelmed by live tapes with Sam Morrison with Miles, so it will be interesting to see what the studio session is like. Am I missing something or will I be getting all of "Get Up With It" again? If the sound is improved, that could be O.K. anyway. -

I am either boring, or have an ability to endure boredom which exceeds some other people's, because I think that AAJ is consistently interesting. Come to think of it, both of the above possibilites may be true. -

I think you'll find the majority of regular posters here DON'T make comments about AAJ. Like any other group, there are a few people who are more outspoken than the rest, and a few that will gladly share their opinion about anything. I post at both boards, but don't find as much that interests me there. I do like to read some of the reviews on AAJ, though that's separate from the board itself. AAJ used to not allow any mention of this board, or links to it. Has that changed recently? I don't know the official position of the AAJ powers that be about mentioning this board, but references to threads on this board are made all the time now by AAJ posters. -
Especially the first song, as I recall--Phil and Lew really tear it up. The album's cover art must set a record for the most reeds pictured on an album cover.

I find it interesting how often the regular posters here like to make negative comments about AllAboutJazz. I know that Chuck Nessa had a specific bad experience with Mr. Ricci. Otherwise, why the need to bash another board? There are no negative comments about this board on AllAboutJazz, that I am aware of. I think it is fair to say that AllAboutJazz has changed and evolved over the years, so to base negative opinions on what it was like in the past may not be accurate. I read and post on both. In the past year I have not noticed any difference in the quality of discussions on the two boards. The two boards have different personalities, as can be expected. With the quality of people posting here, I would think that we would be beyond the need to boost our egos by bashing another group--which goes on at schools and among fans of sports teams all the time. -
I enjoyed Michelle's performance in Star Trek: Next Generation.

That is very helpful, thanks.

An employee of a high end audio component store told me that Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs are "the best". Does anyone have experience with them, before I scour the globe for a place to buy them?

It's interesting to me that Liebman states that Miles Davis' music in 1973 and 1974 was inspired by Sun Ra and others. I have not seen a printed mention of Sun Ra's music as an influence or inspiration for Miles' music before.

I heard about Organissimo on the AllAboutJazz board and was curious. I read and post on both boards and like them both. I really know how to pick 'em. Back when all of you were having fun on the Blue Note Board, I was following and posting on the Jazz Times board, which blew up over constant fighting between posters Bombastic and Body Electric. There were some good posts on that board, but after skimming the links to the old Blue Note Board posted above, I can see that I should have been on Blue Note. -

Buddy Collette's "Big Band In Concert" on the Bridge label is another excellent later Buddy Collette album. I never knew that Ndugu could drum so effectively in a big band context.

This album, "Rites of Pan", is a great one. It is my favorite Tabackin album. It cries out to be reissued on CD. There is some seriously great and beautiful music on this album. Of the Akiyoshi-Tabackin Big Band albums, I think that Lew is heard to great advantage on "Long Yellow Road" and "Farewell"--with Mingus' silhouette on the cover.

He had an interesting tenure as the jazz professor at the University of Wisconsin's School of Music, immediately before Richard Davis was hired in 1977 (Richard has held the position ever since). Is there anyone out there who was in any of Cheatham's classes at the University of Wisconsin?

Some quad LPs had very different content. For example, Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers" had different takes for several songs used on the quad version, which were so different from the ones used on the stereo version that it sounds like a different album.
