Gravely ill usually means close to death, so I do not know that she is going to get well soon. This is very sad. Every time I heard her live, she was inspired.

Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!
Hot Ptah replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My mother ordered the Complete Woody Shaw Muse bos by phone around June 1 and it arrived before June 15. i placed an order around May 5 and have all of it. It came in two shipments as one box was temporarily out of stock. i have never understood the obsession on this board for the date on which Mosaic orders have arrived. I have also never understood the anxiety expressed often, about where the Mosaic order could be, before it arrives. i have over 100 Mosaic sets, purchased from their first year of operation until now. Literally every single set arrived fairly soon after it was ordered, with not a single problem with delivery. It usually takes me weeks to listen to and fully digest all of a Mosaic set. So if it arrives on April 5 or April 9, who cares? I have always found that to be an odd topic of discussion on this board. -
I have some of these albums so with about two weeks of playing a lot of albums, I have come up a few more of them. I just knew that I had #16 in my collection. It is "Woogie Boogie" from Bob Dylan's "Self Portrait" album. That is quite a twist for a Blindfold Test. I love the idea of choosing this and fooling almost everyone. #15, In A Little Spanish Town, with vocalists. This is Yusef Lateef from his album "The Doctor Is in....And Out." I have quite a stack of Lateef CDs and had not played them in a while. Time to remedy that now! 14. I knew that I knew the song title, and finally it came to me--"Tammy". I must admit that I cheated on Google, looking for guitar versions, and came up with Hank Garland. Again, an inspired choice for a BFT! 10. Your comment about jazz not being his usual gig makes me wonder if this is more of a blues or soul player--either Maceo Parker or King Curtis? 5. This is Phyllis Hyman. I finally recognized her voice. I have her on a few albums, and a friend of mine in the 1980s really loved her singing and played her albums often for me. So in reverse order, those are a few guesses. The rest are still stumping me completely, but it is all very enjoyable, intriguing music to me. I share Thom Keith's thoughts that I want to know who is on #4 as I will have to get the album if #4 is representative of the entire album.

Sure, you have January, 2018.

Great. Thanks for stepping forward.

Here is the list of Blindfold Test presenters for 2017. We do not have anyone for the September, 2017, Blindfold Test, and need a volunteer. If you have not presented a Blindfold Test before, and think that you may be interested, I will help you with the logistics of how it is done. Thom Keith will prepare your music for download and streaming by the group. Thom is easy to work with and is very helpful. I hope that someone steps forward so that we can continue our unbroken streak of presenting Blindfold Tests for over thirteen years! 2017 January Jo Keith February Dan Gould March Hot Ptah April Mary6170 May Hardbopjazz June mjzee July Thom Keith August randyhersom September medjuck October JSngry November The Magnificent Goldberg December Felser

Dan, I will send you a PM.

mjzee, I have noticed that in nearly every month there is a lot of discussion in the first week and the last few days of the month, with a more idle period in between. I do not know why that is. You have received a robust response for 2017.

Must-have box sets (non-Mosaic)
Hot Ptah replied to Mr Mingus's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Complete Recordings of Sun Ra, that four foot high box in the shape of the planet Saturn. Hey, I can dream! -
Now I know why I know this track so well. I included it on my BFT #94. However, I did not remember that for quite a while after listening to your BFT. It is a great track. i miss George Adams. i saw him live several times and he was always so great. He played with a passion, an immediacy that seems to be not as common in jazz today.

Is Track 6 from the Amacord Nino Rota album, Track 9 on that album, the medley of several songs starting with The White Sheik?
-
#6 has a George Adams solo which I think is great. I have this album and have played it often. It is on the tip of my brain. I hope I positively identify it before I go mad trying.
-
I see! Thanks for including those radio broadcasts. I really enjoy them.
-
I have never heard of this group, but I like this rendition of the TV show theme. Wow, Thanks for including some of your own work! How could I not know that this was Fathead? I need to get this album. I have some Little Milton recordings, but not this one. Very interesting Thanks for one of the great Blindfold Tests!

Dwight was the staff person at Penny Lane music store in Kansas City the day that I moved to town in 1982 and bought Lester Bowie--All the Magic and Jack DeJohnette--Inflation Blues. He wanted to know how I knew about this kind of music.
-
I don't care at all what the group is called. If it has Ambrose Akinmusire in it, I would go see it. His live performance with his own group was a highlight of my concert going in 2016

I have listened to this Blindfold Test some more. It is very enjoyable and intriguing. I love it. Some of the tracks just totally stump me, even though I enjoy them. I wonder if some of the tracks feature European jazz musicians, who I do not know very much about. Whoever these musicians are, the performances are very compelling and I am looking forward to the Reveal.

I saw him perform with Dizzy Gillespie in 1978, and he was outstanding.
-
I saw George Adams live with McCoy Tyner several times and he was always great. One of the most amazing solos I have ever heard in my life was his solo on "Fly With The Wind" at the Earle in Ann Arbor in December, 1978. He blew the roof off of the place. It was incredible. I bought every album he released as a leader or sideman as soon as I could get it, in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!
Hot Ptah replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This discussion reminds me of the time that there was an extended discussion on another jazz board about Jazz Record Mart (when the store was open in downtown Chicago) and how the problems with how it was run, and how its online site was run, were frustrating to many members. Possible solutions were discussed. I wrote a letter to Bob Koester of Jazz Record Mart, telling him about the board and its discussion, and summarizing the problems and their solutions from the members. I wrote that I was sending the letter out of my love for Jazz Record Mart and my thought that the suggestions might be helpful. I received a letter back from Bob Koester which was typed and signed by him. It was a blistering reply that I should mind my own business. He wrote that he was surprised that so many people wanted to poke around in his private affairs. -
Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!
Hot Ptah replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I am going to do the same thing, buy from Mosaic regularly instead of from other sellers, until I have all of the sets that I want. In terms of tracking numbers and shipping details, this is a company which almost went out of business. I think we need to cut them some slack. They may have had to lay off their clerical staff. If we like Mosaic and want them to survive, I think we cannot complain too much about their process right now. -
I think that unless Mosaic sees a steady increase in sales over several months, and not just this one time uptick due to the notice that they are in trouble, it is very unlikely that they will ever put out any new sets again.

I can identify a few musicians, although not the albums that these tracks came from. 7. This is Little Milton. I knew that the voice was familiar and played bits of several blues albums from my collection until I found the match. I do not have this album though. It may be from a later period than the Little Milton albums which I have. 10. This is Mary Halvorson on guitar. I went through a period of listening to her quite a lot, some years ago now. I have not kept up with her more recent releases. I included a track from her Saturn Sings album on one of my Blindfold Tests, maybe five years ago. I am not familiar with this track or the album on which it appears.

Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!
Hot Ptah replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I think that the kind of people who still buy physical boxsets are the same kind of people who still respond to receiving a physical catalog in the mail. I think that Mosaic may have made a mistake there. What I think would save Mosaic is having jazz lovers order a set every month, or every few months, as a regular thing. The reminder of receiving a catalog can be helpful. i think that the Mosaic catalog could be much less elaborate than it was. It was a catalog among catalogs, on a level of quality with the box sets. It could be more of a pamphlet and still work to remind people to order. -

There could in fact be quite a few orders. Hans (J.A.W.) posted the initial warning on four online boards, including the large and very active Hoffman board, which has a thread going on right now about Mosaic's problems. Their thread has several posts by members who say that they have just placed orders. If it is a crafty marketing idea, then the Mosaic staff person who I talked to on the telephone yesterday is a great actor. He sounded very sincere as he described their financial problem.
