  1. Walter Trout has a new album, "We're All In This Together." It was released on September 15, 2017. To me, this album is great. That is the only word for it. To me, it is one of the top 25 best blues albums of all time, by anyone. It transcends genre. It is just a great album by any standard. Blues rock and blues based guitar solo fans will love it. There are a great many concise, organized, excellent guitar solos on this album. I agree with the comment by an Amazon commentator in the link below that it is “Seriously one of the best blues albums I have ever listened to”. It is one of those albums where every moment is just top notch. They caught magic in the studio somehow. I usually do not like collaborative albums with guest stars, as they are usually much less than the sum of their parts. Somehow this one is a true winner on literally every cut. The guests are Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Sonny Landreth, Charlie Musselwhite, Mike Zito, Robben Ford, Warren Haynes, Eric Gales, Edgar Winter, Joe Louis Walker, John Nemeth, Joe Trout, Randy Bachmann, John Mayall, and Joe Bonamassa. I have thought of Walter Trout as an artist who operates on a high plateau of quality. In my humble opinion, on this album he went above his plateau to the top of Mount Everest. https://www.amazon.com/Were-This-Together-Walter-Trout/dp/B072XH65BD/ref=ice_ac_b_dpb?ie=UTF8&qid=1506436319&sr=8-1&keywords=walter+trout+cd
  2. I want to spread joy and happiness in the world, and interesting discussion. This particular topic was not of interest to the board, and seemed to be creating negativity. I am feeling my mortality after three surgeries this year, and just don't want to be the instigator of negativity any more in the years I have left on this earth.
  3. medjuck, I want to say that this is one of my all time favorite Blindfold Tests. I listen to Blindfold Tests a lot in my car while I am driving. This particular Blindfold Test has really seeped into my brain. I keep finding new treasures in it each time I listen. You outdid yourself!
  4. That Frigo album is very fine! i am now listening to: McCoy Tyner: Echoes of a Friend
  5. Wow, how did you pick out Trombone Shorty on Track 13? I have a CD by him, and have seen him live, and I could not do it.
  6. Careful, it's a slippery slope. Don't go to the clearout record sale this time, and it could snowball. Pretty soon you will not buy any new albums at all, until you have heard all of the albums you already own at least once. The horror! The horror!
  7. Listening to a lot of Richard Davis, including this one:
  8. Did you ever decide on a best course of action Chuck? I am curious because I will be in the same position some day.
  9. Well, I have listened to Track 8 many times. I really like it a lot! but the bass sax solo provides me with no clues.
  10. One of the saxophonists on Track 4 is either Charlie Parker or a disciple of Charlie Parker who was so into Parker that he slept with his Charlie Parker records. Track 11--who is that clarinet player? He is more smooth and elegant sounding than any top jazz clarinet player I can think of. So who could that be, who also has a lot of technique? I can't figure it out. Track 13 is interesting. The trombone soloist sounds more like an R&B/blues player, not a bop schooled jazz player. So how many of those are there, if I am correct about that? Fred Wesley? I saw him live and he did not sound like this. The trombonist could be a Latin player. I don't know the world of Latin trombone at all. Willie Colon did not sound like this. It is a mystery, and intriguing.
  11. Thanks! I am interested in this era of fusion, and these are some excellent selections.
  12. I remain very interested in anyone's experiences with Dusty Groove, Amoeba, or other known buyers of large collections. Do they travel hundreds of miles, and what is this "fair price" that they offer? How fair is it? They may be the only option for my daughter, if I suddenly die.
  13. I would like to learn more about Amoeba Music's purchases. My daughter is my sole heir and wants nothing to do with my collection. I may have to set up a sale to someone like Amoeba Music at some point.
  14. When I moved from a home to a small apartment, I had no particular desire to sell my collection just yet. I had not enough room in the new apartment to hold my LPs, CDs, books and magazines. It was not even close. I was pleasantly surprised to find that one can rent climate controlled, secure, clean storage units for under $250 a month. That is what I did, and still do. I put all of my collections into this off-site storage unit. I thought I would not like it, having my music miles away. I would not be able to roll out of bed and grab a particular album on a whim. I found that I like it all right. I go to my storage unit regularly and get music out of it. You might do that until you decide what to do with everything, if you are going to have storage space issues in your new home. That buys you time to figure things out.
  15. #6 has the sound of Blind Willie Johnson, almost like jazz musicians playing over an old Blind Willie Johnson album. #8: I can't identify it but I want to buy it I really like this track a lot! The arrangement, the feel, the solos--all just what I like. More comments to come.
  16. Welcome to the board! I will contact you about Blindfold Tests.
  17. I would like to extend an invitation to all, to sign up to present a Blindfold Test in 2018. I hope that some members who have not presented before will want to do it. Thom Keith and I will help you with everything. I have gone back through my messages to find the members who have already requested particular months in 2018. If you had put in a request and are not listed below, please let me know. January Dan Gould February Hardbopjazz March Hot Ptah April Mary6170 May lipi June Ken Dryden July Thom Keith August The Magnificent Goldberg September Milestones October Cardinal Jazz Fan November aparxa December Felser
  18. Jim and Dan, thanks for this but I have another member lined up to fill in this year if a member cannot present. Jeff Crompton had the policy of one BFT per member per year and I think it is a good one.
  19. 3. Tarika Blue - Sunshower from The Blue Path - Ryo Kawasaki - guitar, Marvin Blackman - saxophone, Barry Coleman - Bass, Kevin Atkins - Drums, Bradie Spellman - Percussion, Piano – Phil Clendeninn. Always loved this guitar solo, never liked anything else Ryo Kawasaki did in the 70s. 4. Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau - Ngungi from Omona Wapi Much of my rock/pop/other listening was influenced by the bite sized reviews of Robert Christgau - he was not reliable for jazz or classical although he did give Sonny Rollins G-Man an A plus. He pointed me at this Afropop collaboration. I have absolutely never heard of these artists or albums. Very interesting! 10. Amina Claudine Myers - Golden Lady in the Graham Cracker Window from Poems For Piano - works of Marion Brown. Her debut, and interesting to hear an almost classical treatment from two well known avant- gardists. Wow! I have seen Amina live, and have several of her albums, but have never heard her play like this! I am astonished. I had no idea that she could play like this. Fascinating! 13. Thomas Jefferson Kaye - American Lovers - I always think of this as the great lost Steely Dan song. The singer/leader was never with the band, but they provide composition, producer and backing vocals for this beauty. Was it too idealistic and pretty for the usually cynical Steely Dan to use on their own album - maybe so! I have heard all of Steely Dan's output many times, but did not catch their involvement here when I listened. Time to go back now and listen again! I had no idea that they were ever involved in a project like this.
  20. 8. David Eyges (cello) - The Captain from The Captain - Ronnie Boykins Bass, Mark Whitecage Alto Sax, Jeff Williams Drums. Speaking of crunchy riffs, some of the jazz that was among the first to really grab me were the Julius Hemphill Arista/Freedom sides featuring Abdul Wadud. When I heard this in the late 70s I was thrilled that someone else was working in the neighborhood of That Sound! Oh, so Ronnie Boykins was the Sun Ra sideman on this song! I could not figure out that hint. I am getting this album, asap. I really like this song!
  21. Thanks for the hints. As for #8, I am trying now to think of who played with Sun Ra and recorded with other artists, and would have played this kind of material. I will let you know if I think of something.
