  1. Serious question: Who would be getting paid at this point? The descendants of Saul Zaentz? Did someone like Brew Moore get royalties on a record like that? Quick research says that if he did, it was 1-4% then, though contemporary standards are 10% on reissues. And of course, the musicians are long gone, so it would be their estates getting the (seemingly small) royalties? This has probably all been discused before, but I'm not privy to it.
  2. Do we know who owns the rights? One of those esoteric companies should issue it!
  3. Yep. Concord should let him run their reissues. He knows what he's doing:
  4. For those not opposed to the Fresh Sound label, thi is an outstanding set. Contains McBrowne/Four Souls debut, na "Eastern Lights", and the Gloria Smythe album, so 3LPs on 2 CD's.:
  5. Very late in the game for OJC's (2002), but it did finally make it. https://www.discogs.com/release/7767755-James-Clay-David-Fathead-Newman-The-Sound-Of-The-Wide-Open-Spaces
  6. Also not a favorite of mine. Fills a slot on my shelves.
  7. Actually ordered mine from importcds via ebay, which is sometimes cheaper than ordering direct from them if you spend $65 more.
  8. They probably never had the masters to use for the CD due to the Atlantic vault fire. Maybe the new release will sound somewhat better, but no way I'm ponying up $25 to find out. Gotta love the hype in the Amazon description: " celebrating the most sensational jazz collaboration of the 1950's". Maybe they never heard 'Jazz at Massey Hall', or 'Tenor Madness' or 'Monk's Music' or the 1956 'Jazz Messengers' album on Columbia, or...
  9. I'm a Soft Machine fan. Have this and have listened to the music, haven't watched the DVD yet. Interesting and nice to have, but far from essential IMO.
  10. Thanks, I just sprang for the Nucleus and Barbara Thompson BBC sets, after many months of deliberation.

    Tina Brooks

Per Brooks and BN, I believe I remember reading that 'True Blue' sold under 1,000 copies when it was released, and that is why they did not release the other dates - economically unfeasible.
  12. Amazon seeks to fill every retail gap known to man (and several that are not yet known).
  13. I have the Tingen book, glad to own it.
  14. Finnigan recorded with a LOT of people, from Hendrix to Cher.
  15. Dude could play, for sure. His studio sideman work ranged from James Brown to Gato Barbieri.
  16. But it sounds the least like a typical CTI album.
  17. Not even 'Sugar'?
  18. Welcome! I've actually never heard that JHB Columbia album, need to go dig it out on you tube! Appreciated Hahn's work with John Handy, and on Hahn's own Arhoolie album. Don't know about the Serfs (see that Tietgen was in that group) or about their album on Capitol. Will also see if I can find that on you tube! Thanks for the info.
  19. His CTI recordings have aged incredibly well (as have many of the other Sebesky-era albums on that label).
  20. He and Teddy Charles did a good job organizing those type of dates.
  21. Joe Beck had a ton of talent and never seemed to know quite what to do with it. Akin to Larry Coryell in many ways.
  22. Gave a listen to digital files of the Washington/Roots set yesterday. While it is of historical/time/place interest, I did not find it all that compelling musically, especially Washington's playing.
  23. I love 'The Quest'. And that was on Prestige. Why did Waldron record so little 1962-1968?
