Charles Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard for RSD 2025
felser replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
Agreed on all points! -
I always appreciated her ca. 1990's work on Somethin' Else/Blue Note, own a good bit of it, which is unusual for me to go in so heavily on albums from that era. The 1994 live at the Village Vanguard albums were especially good.

The guitar player is also an impediment IMO. Bird plays great on this.

1 – “Cherokee”. Vinyl sourced, likely from an old 78. Sax player is really good, but the guitar rhythm is so rigid - between that and the sound quality, a hard listen for me. 2 – An easy listen for me, I really like this. Hope I have it somewhere. Guitar player is fabulous. Organist is excellent and I like his sound. Both are adventurous for the genre. Hope (and assume) I have this on the shelves somewhere – if not, I’ll look to remedy that ASAP. So, so good. My favorite cut on the BFT. 3 – This is a huge winner. I should know this. Reminds me of the album Sonny Rollins did with Don Cherry, and feels like it is from that era based on the rhythm (rock solid bass pre-Stanley Clarke) and the recording sound, but that’s not Don Cherry. But it could be Charlie Haden. Surely, I own this? If not, I will. And I’ll revisit this cut and may eventually ID it if someone doesn’t beat me to it. 4 – A frantic “Well, You Needn’t”. Inventive pianist, though the stride turn is too cute for my tastes. But the guy can really play. 5 – I know the composition, just need to remember it. Arrangement too cerebral for me, but it’s fairly interesting. 6 – “Bags’ Groove”. Good cut. About impossible to do a bad version of this song. Soloists are all solid, though they don’t blow me away the way the soloists in track #2 did. I assume 60’s vintage by well-known practitioners of the organ-jazz genre. Good chance I own this one already, and I may be able to eventually ID it. 7 – Older style than #6 and suffers for it my ears. I don’t like the sound of the organ player (choice of stops, etc.) though organ players I do like, such as Jimmy Smith, use this at times. Guitar has a good sound but a conventional style. More Kenny Burrell, where cut #2 was more Pat Martino. But it’s a good cut. 8 – Well-known standard that I’m not placing, but others will ID the song. Very safe, very pleasant, very competent reading of it by talented musicians who I suspect are in later stages of their careers. Vibes player takes solo honors for me. Good background music. 9 – Cocktail music. Nothing happening for me. 10 – Solo vibes, vinyl sourced. Now that’s interesting. The only solo vibes album I own or even know is this, so I think it’s the last cut from this album. (edit: forgot about the Gary Burton album that Dub Modal mentions, but I'll stick with my guess). 11 – Vaguely reggae-ish, which is never a good thing in my book. And I don’t like the guitar player. I think it’s a cover of a pop song, but I can’t ID the song. Not a winner for me. My least favorite cut on the BFT, and the only one I actively dislike. 12 – Starts with good high-note trumpet player – I would guess Maynard Ferguson, but since it turns out to be a JATP-type of cut, maybe not. Guessing Sweets Edison is the second trumpet. 1950’s vintage? Louis Armstrong up last, of course. That’s an identifying clue, but not for me. You can’t possibly dislike a cut like this, it’s so happy, though I would never pull it off the shelf to play. Love cuts 2 and 3, can’t wait for the ID’s on them. Like cut #6 a lot. Much pleasantness in the rest of it, thanks so much. Dan, amazingly, you and I totally agree on this cut!

Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)
felser replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Thanks David, heartbreaking to hear, as I am still very much in my own CD era (as are many of us here). I have started breaking down and paying for downloads at times for stuff of special interest to me that likely won't be seeing CD release, but even downloads aren't available for a lot of desired material which is vinyl-only. The Nathan Davis ORTF release comes immediately to mind in that regard. Thanks, I'll give Ross, Wilkins, and Artemis a listen. I've always been OK with Branford, think he's gotten a bad rap through the decades due to his infamous brother. Good idea, thanks. -

I sincerely hadn't noticed, tuned out years ago, as guys like Robert Glasper didn't do it for me. Who should I be hearing from their recent catalog? -

+1 You really want to hear another 75 years of Don Was directed material? Hard pass here. -
Received this evening: Greetings, Bandcamp Friday returns on May 2. For 24 hours, we’re waiving our revenue share, meaning more of your money goes directly to the artists and labels you support. Since launching Bandcamp Friday in 2020, fans have paid over $130 million directly to artists and labels through this initiative. That support has helped them pay rent, fund tours, press records, and even raise money for causes they care about. It’s a simple idea with real impact: buy music and merch you love, and give artists a boost when they need it most. Mark your calendar. Start building your wishlist. Bandcamp Friday is coming.

Understood on David's comments, and agreed. We didn't learn anything new from Just Coolin' (it was OK, but really just product), and I can 't imagine we will from the extra cuts here. Thankfully, in some cases, like the Elvin and the Tyner/Henderson, we do learn something new by hearing them. There's other stuff in (and out of) the BN vaults I'd rather see released. Give me Burrell's mysterious 'Freedom' album, which I've never heard. Give me some of the infamous rejected albums, like the Wayne and the Train Wreck. I'll pay to hear them no matter how flawed they are. Give me some of the overlooked 70's albums that have rarely or never seen CD release, like the New Heritage Keyboard Quartet. Give me more along the lines of the Donald Byrd Black Byrd-era Montreux set, which was eye-opening. -

That was the case with the original LP issue of this one: https://www.discogs.com/master/331502-Kenny-Burrell-With-Art-Blakey-On-View-At-The-Five-Spot-Cafe/image/SW1hZ2U6NjI4MzM3NQ== -
Yes, and they recorded a few albums as such.

June 27 release. They were an interesting group, and Colin Hodgkinson was quite an amazing bass player, the star of the show. Think Jack Bruce's 'Things We Like' for a comparison touchpoint, but Bruce didn't hold a candle to Hodgkinson as a bass player. Cherry Red will do this one right, as always. Great, great record company.

My favorite Bartz album is this, just released in 2023 For 45 years,. my go-to Bartz was the amazing 'I've Known Rivers And Other Bodies', the great Milestone 2 LP set of his 1973 Montreux performance.
-
RIP, especially liked his work on the two Bartz - Harlem Bush Music albums. And he sounded good on the three Horace Silver - United States of Mind albums despite the painfully dated lyrics.

A $20 bill (Jackson) a $5 bill (Lincoln), being willing to pay around $25 for the Burrell set, and Jim's quick sense of humor. -

Me too. Will order from DeepDiscount, along with the Strata-East CD upgrades, next time they send me a discount coupon. -
Yep. Key missing piece is Clifford Jordan - In The World.
-
I have the Bellaphon CD, otherwise I'd be all over the DL day 1. Same with Glass Bead Games.
-
The Harper, Jordan, Cowell - Musa, and Tolliver Slugs and Loosdrecht would be my first recommendations, but the Vick and some others are also pretty great.
-
I believe that's true. I have all of this in various formats (from Mosaic sets to so-so Bellaphon and Japanese CD's down to ugly-sounding burns), but may be interested in some of the downloads for audio upgrade if the sound quality is good. But I'd prefer CD's, so will wait to see if more are planned. I have to think that at least Glass Bead Games and Capra Black would be strong CD candidates. And please, Mack Avenue, look into getting the rights to reissue the amazing Reasons in Tonality, one of my very favorite Strata-East releases. And it would be nice to finally see Alkebu-Lan in digital form.
-
I'll look to pick some of these over time, but will wait to see if more CD reissues are forthcoming. Have to think that Capra Black and Glass Bead Games at least would be likely CD candidates. I have almost all of these in some form, but definitely would welcome better fidelity on several. And please, get the rights to reissue Reasons in Tonality and Alkebu-Lan!
