    Tete Montoliu

http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/jazz-entre-amigos/tete-montoliu-parte-01-jazz-entre-amigos/1092267/ http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/jazz-entre-amigos/montoliu-2-prueba/1092860/ Two 'Jazz Entre Amigos' programs on TVE, fully dedicated to Tete Montoliu. The first video includes several performances with Lou Donaldson, Clarence Say and Billy Kay. The second one covers a concert with a Wynton Marsalis extended troupe: Marsalis, Robert Watson on alto sax, Bill Pierce on tenor sax, Art Blakey and Ron Carter, among others. Plus some tracks with Sonny Stitt. Plus same with Harold Land. Plus trio performances. All in all, two highly enjoyable hours, presented by one of our Spanish foremost jazz critics, Juan Claudio Cifuentes 'Cifu', sadly gone a few years ago. DISCLAIMER: Anyway, Wynton haters can skip, if it gives them the heebie-jeebies
  3. If you all are not able to enjoy Springsteen’s discs up to say ‘Nebraska’ (1982), definitely it’s your loss. As previously mentioned, ‘Darkness...’ and ‘The River’ might be the winners. After 1982, ‘Born In The USA’ was a hit maker with a bunch of great songs; ‘Tunnel Of Love’, ‘Lucky Town’ and ‘Human Touch’ still contained a few enjoyable tracks; and ‘The Ghost Of Tom Joad’ was a nice but missed attempt of a second ‘Nebraska’. After that, I can agree that it’s been 25 years of the same mid-tempo song over and over again. Only for diehard fans. But I have the utmost respect for Bruce, as an artist and as a person. Do yourself a favour and listen to ‘Thunder Road’ once again, with your heart -not with your jazzically trained ears-. If you do not feel anything, ok, forget about it and go back to your Blue Notes.
  4. There must be something wrong with that alto, and that’s why it sounds so painfully out of tune, right? 😜
  5. Looks like we have two similar threads in parallel, one in the Miscellaneous Music section and one in the Vinyl Frontier section:
  6. Mixed feelings. I can enjoy it from time to time, only in small dosis... Funny to recall Tete's comments on this session, which was initially planned as a Dexter Gordon session but turned into a Braxton-led session when Dex failed to be available for some reason that I cannot remember now. Ok, we got the rhythm section, we got the studio... let's do it. Looks like Braxton was very satisfied with Tete's playing, which he deemed as perfectly suitable for his avant-garde conception of jazz. On the other hand, Tete recognized he was playing notes and chords "here and there", without any thread or preconceived approach, while Braxton was "playing his non-sense" (not the perfect translation for the Spanish word "burradas").
  7. Loved that disc when it first came out! And I still revisit it from time to time...
