  1. Yes, Harold, he looks very different from the covers where he wore a beard... and now he's a man in his eighties! BTW, Chris, many thanks for sharing all this material. Many familiar names in that International Voting Pannel... though funnily I've never been in touch with the Spanish member (Julio Martí)!
  2. You can now order Ellington in London 1958, the 2 CDs set issued by the Ellington 2008 Conference people, with the concert at Gaumont State, October 25, 1958, previously available only as a double LP (limited edition from the Ellington '88 Conference). Ellington 2008 Conference website

  7. On his "Thinking Big" disc for Arbors (1997) he plays clarinet and bass clarinet; C-melody, alto, tenor, baritone, soprano, bass and contrabass saxophones; theremin; and contrabass sarrusophone. Wonderful disc, BTW. And he is also a master playing valve trombone and trumpet!

    James P. Johnson

Some excerpts from my interview with stride pianist Bernd Lhotzky, published in Spanish on Tomajazz (October 2006), where he talks about James P. Johnson:
  10. PM sent re: the three George Lewis discs.
  11. Al Gore Al Grey Al Haig
  12. As for John Chilton's Bechet biography, I still haven't read it, but his biographies of Coleman Hawkins, Henry Red Allen, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday are among my favorite jazz books, for sure!
  13. I feel the same way about both Wilber and Kenny Davern. There's a certain packaged complacency about the way they use the pieces of the jazz past that attract them. That they're more "professional" players than a lot of revivalists somehow makes it more annoying. Couldn't disagree more, Larry. I find both Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber really wonderful players. Davern in his peeweerussellesque oddity and Wilber as a very complete musician. If I should pick one of them, I'd go for Davern, though. What are your thoughts on Ken Peplowski?
  14. Bob Wilber's Bechet Legacy - The Hamburg Concert (Nagel-Heyer)

  16. Barry Guy New Orchestra (with Evan Parker, Mats Gustafsson, Agustí Fernández, Herb Robertson...) at the XXVII Festival de Jazz San Juan Evangelista. Here's the really outstanding festival program:

  19. One day late but... Joyeux anniversaire, mon ami!!!
  20. I am trying to find details on this label, specially on Jazz Session JS5, that included "Tasty" and "Lullaby For Ben" by the Harold Ashby Quartet with Richard Wyands (p), Major Holley (b) and Connie Kay (d), recorded on May 18, 1977. Thanks in advance, Agustín
  21. Discographical information from Bechet's Discography at the Sidney Bechet Society: In fact, this IS NOT the first Kimball Hall recording: Source: Sidney Bechet Society Ltd.
  22. Yep, ubu, I had about a third of this material from different CDs and I have always loved Berigan! Worst thing is that the "black zone" on my shelves has grown quickly in the last months (Chu Berry, Columbia, Prez/Basie, Hampton, Teagarden, Bix/Tram/Trumbauer and one more I can't remember now).... and my wife has noticed this!
  23. Here's one more query, this time for our resident English oldtimers: Could anybody confirm catalog number for the English Emi/One-Up reissue of Harry Carney's "Rock Me Gently" LP? I have seen it listed as DU0133, BUT this serial number looks much more like the Emi/Double-Up reissues (such as DU0125 for this "Rock Me Gently" LP). All the Emi/One-Up issues I have seen have a OU XXXX serial number, such us OU 2159 for The G.U.S. (Footwear) BAND disc called "Kings of Brass". Any help is much appreciated! A
  24. If anybody owns a copy of Harold Ashby & Paul Gonsalves - Two from Duke (Columbia Lansdowne series SX 6326), could you check it and confirm recording dates, personnel, track listing and timings? As far as I know, this disc extracts several tracks from three different sessions. Thanks in advance!Agustín Pérez
