Marcel: The origins, composer credits and first recordings of "Round midnight" were discussed in the duke-lym mail group a few weeks ago. That´s where I found mention of this earlier recording of this tune. Source is a very reliable member of that list, regarding discographical issues. No idea if this is available anywhere. I´ve asked in that list.

Yes, both leader and sideman dates. Note that my list includes sessions, and not albums. For the LP era, the comparison depends on how many different recording dates are included in each album. Anyway, being a very helpful discographical tool, Lord incudes hundreds of errors, duplications, omissions.... But still more accurate than AMG, that´s for sure!

Really sad news!

Not that this proves nothing with accuracy but, according to Tom Lord Discography, there are quite a few pianists with many more sessions than Bill Evans: -Duke Ellington 1109 -Hank Jones 933 -Count Basie 609 -Teddy Wilson 557 -Fletcher Henderson 514 -Jess Stacy 489 -Herbie Hancock 464 -Stan Kenton 445 -Jimmy Rowles 444 -Oscar Peterson 412 -27 other pianists, from 379 to 242 (among them "rarities" such as Irving Brodsky, Arthur Schutt. Chummy McGregor, Bengt Hallberg or Paul Smith) ... -Bill Evans 240 With the old version (4.4), I compiled a list in Excel for all the musicians included in the index with more than 25 sessions, that I can order alphabetically, by number of sessions or by recording years (yes, I do stupid things sometimes, I know)

The earliest recording of "Round midnight" is an acetate Monk recorded for Timme Rosenkranz prior to Cootie's 1944 recording. Cootie didn´t contribute to the tune, and had to pay (around $200) for the rights to use it for a shorter period. It became his band´s theme song. Shortly before, the band´s theme song had been "Epistrophy"(aka "Fly Right"). In 1946, Dizzy Gillespie added his famous introduction and cadenza for his big band arrangement, which proved so popular that Monk added it (an altered version) to his own performance of "Round Midnight."

And one more you´re missing: "It´s you or no one" (SteepleChase LP 12": SCC 6022 ) or (SteepleChase CD: SCCD 36022) or (Video Arts Music CD: VACE-9006).

Yes! David Palmquist is doing a great job since he started in the beginning of 2005.

I´ve also bought it at the sale price (for owners of previous versions), but haven´t used it yet.

He was a blues/R&B/boogie-woogie pianist (even recorded with Elmore James). There´s a disc under his name, "88 à la carte" (Crown 5024) recorded in the 50s. AMG review

Guess it´s Alfredo "Chico" Álvarez, a Canadian-born trumpeter who was with Stan Kenton in the 40s and later with Maynard Ferguson.
