  1. Word! (though for Basie nuts like you and me.... a Complete Basie on Columbia -leaving aside those Andorran products- is due!!!!)
  2. Try: FNAC España DiscMedi website JazzMessengers And a small advice: avoid the Helix releases. To my knowledge, they are non-authorized reissues that sometimes miss some tracks from the original releases, as you can see in my Tete Montoliu Discography at Michael Fitzgerald´s "JazzDiscography" website. There will be a major improvement in the discography in the next months. Stay tuned! Best wishes, Agustín
  3. Thanks for your input, brownie. Is this the cover for that Hampton LP?
  4. No. The GIITH HighNote CD contains live recordings coming from Jerry Newman´s acetates. Definitely, Classics are not focused on this kind of material.
  5. The only Ellington-related disc I´ve found on ADES label is Bolling Big Band Plays Ellington Black Brown and Beige -Adès ADE 671- (1990)
  6. Somebody asked this on another list: I don´t have New DESOR, and Timner´s "Ellingtonia" doesn´t list issues. No trace of any Ellington release on ADES in the online sources I´ve checked. Thanks in advance, Agustín
  7. This could be a start (from BMI website): http://repertoire.bmi.com/writer.asp?page=...rytype=WriterID
  8. Yes! I always use the program function of my stereo when I play the JRM Victor Centennial box-set.
  9. Try www.bookfinder.com
  10. I strongly recommend Allen´s book. It´s a very refreshing view of the earlier years of jazz, that has piqued my curiosity on many obscure musicians. A superb complement to the usual jazz encyclopedias.
  11. 2006 Grammy Awards BEST ALBUM NOTES "The Complete Library Of Congress Recordings By Alan Lomax," John Szwed, album notes writer (Jelly Roll Morton) (Winner) BEST HISTORICAL ALBUM "The Complete Library Of Congress Recordings By Alan Lomax," Jeffrey Greenberg & Anna Lomax Wood, compilation producers; Adam Ayan & Steve Rosenthal, mastering engineers (Jelly Roll Morton) (Winner)
  12. Flat zero. I hate fast food! And I hate McDonalds even more!
  13. For the krazy vinyl junkies.... Spanish Telefunken EP taken from the European All Stars 1961 disc ---> starting bid $149.00 !!!

  15. From http://afgen.com/joe_turner2.html:
  16. From John Edward Hasse´s "Beyond Category" (story is very similar in "Music is my Mistress"):
  17. I´ve just sent Mike details on this session, from my BMG France CD. Do you also have the original issue (that I think it´s Swing M 33.341 as that´s the cover included in the inner sleeve of the CD)? Does it include the same 6 tracks? Was it released on 1955? Questions, questions...
  18. BTW: "Carolina Shout" was one of Ellington´s warhorses in his early days of piano playing. The very same James P. heard him and was quite impressed. Tonight I will check "Music is my Mistress" to quote Ellington´s comments on this piece.
  19. There are at least two more "commercial" versions of Duke Ellington playing "Carolina Shout", besides that one included in "Live and Rare", both recorded at the Theatre des Champs Elysees, broadcast on Europe 1 (30jan65): -one in the first concert [Jazz Club 124] included in "Two Great Concerts" (Accord 302 282) -and one in the second concert [RTE 710434] included in "Duke Ellington & His Orchestra En Concert Avec Europe1 Theatre Des Champs Elysees" (RTE 1503-2) There´s also another version of James P.´s masterpiece recorded on 20may64 at the Wollman Auditorium, Columbia University, and included in the "New York Concert" (MusicMasters 65122-2)... but it´s Willie the Lion Smith who´s playing piano!!! BTW: despite the somehow lukewarm review, I do love "Live and Rare" (though I recognize it´s just for Ellington collectors) Agustín
  20. ABSOLUTELY OFF-TOPIC: Great to hear back from you, P.D. !!!
  21. With this philosophy... ... 75 new discographies have been recently added to Michael Fitzgerald´s great website!!! Click "Leaders" on the upper left corner of the main page: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/

  23. a tough decision between Andrzej Kurylewicz, Andrzej Trzaszkowski, Krzystof Komeda, Iancsi Körössy,... Pianists whose name or surname contains more than four consonants are not allowed...
  24. Well I can critize a list that does not include Martial Solal... OK, let´s not start a "Best European Jazz Pianist Ever" thread.
  25. Since we´re all criticizing this list, why don´t we start a thread listing OUR 50 FAVORITE pianists and then make a top-50 list? "OUR" regardless we´re great jazz minds or not. "FAVORITE" as opposed to "Greatest Ever" or "Most Influential". It would take some time to each one of us to go into our archives and pick 50 piano players, but it would be fun (IMHO) EDIT: to correct spelling
