He´s the pianist on Miles Davis´ "Live at the Hi-Hat" disc (recording date under dispute, 1953 or 1955). Supposedly he was a Boston local musician, but I haven´t been able to find any further references. Any help?

Yes, Chuck!!! Those recordings have been at the top of my "CD re-issues wish list" for too long! Incidentally, the other day I was listening to a Rex Stewart compilation on ASV, "Rexatious", which ends with some varied recordings of the Duke Ellington orchestra from this era. Man, "Trumpet in spades" & "Boy meets horn" are true masterpieces! (though not in the Columbia vaults, I guess, as they were recorded for Brunswick). I played them on my car stereo while I was driving and suddenly I found myself humbling, singing and almost crying out those melodies and solos.

Hi, Milan. Great to see you round here once again! Incidentally, a few weeks ago, I attended a concert by the Spanish sextet Racalmuto, leaded by saxophonist Miguel Malla, with Italian clarinetist Marco Cresci and trumpet player David Herrington on the front line. They play the music of John Kirby´s group and also Raymond Scott´s early compositions (besides quite a few originals in the same trend: emphasis on composition and arrangement, avoiding the typical head-solos-recapitulation). It was a very nice concert that I did enjoy a lot. BTW: I also like John Kirby a lot! Agustín

My listening of Miles Davis´ "Live at the Hi-Hat" disc reminded me of bop-oriented saxophonist Jay Migliori, one of those little known musicians in the history of jazz. Apart from being in the group Supersax and in Woody Herman´s orchestra, he played with many musicians when passing by Boston and took part in literally hundreds of recording sessions as a studio musician. To my knowledge, these are the only albums under his name: -1955: Jay Migliori Quintet, for the Transition label -1975: disc for PRB Int. -1980-81: disc(s) for Discovery -1996: "Smile" (Cexton Records) Any further information (discographical or not) would be much appreciated. No, you won´t find it. The Spanish and Catalan editions are targeted exclusively for Spain; the French edition exclusively for France, and the English edition exclusively for the rest of the world. So it looks like they consider his website as part of Spain...
