    Jazz Oracle

AAJ lists an upcoming Jazz Oracle CD (scheduled for Sep. 19): Jack Teagarden - 1930 Studio Sessions No mention in the Jazz Oracle website, though.
  2. Alistaire McQueen Steve McQueen Queensryche
  3. Yes, I was. Surely the Coltrane CD (and I have about 50, counting bootlegs) that I like the least.
  4. Thanks for posting that picture, Chris! One day you should publish a book with the hundreds of those "amateurish" photos you took through the years...
  5. Jim Crow Black Crowes Ed Blackwell
  6. Gary Giddins André Gide André Hodeir
  7. Has this ever been reissued on CD? Not to my knowledge:
  8. Charlie Christian Buddy Christian June Christie
  9. Richard Rodgers Lorenz Hart Oscar Hammerstein II
  10. Thanks for bringing that DEMS article. I had read it but forgot it.
  11. Yes, Jimmie was great! (in all senses) ;-) Insignificant question: looks like one of the musicians playing in that session (12) does not appear on the picture, as there are 12 persons shown, and Jimmie Rushing is one of them, not having taken part in the recording. Who is he?
  12. The Commodores Lionel Richie Lionel Hampton
  13. I also love the cover pic, with the Lion dressed on that suit, without any tie, but with his perennial hat and cigar look, and with that cane on his right hand.
  14. From Downbeat (June, 1962) Double Play: Carney to Hodges to Ellington By Don DeMichael
  15. Larry, in fact Hodges gave up the soprano on 1940. Legend says that Ellington loved its sound but refused Hodges’ demand that his stipend be doubled for playing it as well as the alto.
  16. With little effort, you can answer yourself by searching here.
  17. FWIW, here´s a link to an illustrated discography of the Prestige Bluesville series.
  18. An absolute masterpiece, IMHO: Alberta Hunter and Victoria Spivey accompanied by Buster Bailey (simply great!), JC Higginbotham on trombone, Cliff Jackson on piano (Victoria Spivey sits in for two tracks), Sidney De Paris on tuba (it´s 1961 but, as in the old times, no contrabass found here) and Zutty Singleton on drums. Lucille Hegamin accompanied by Henry Goodwin on trumpet, Cecil Scott on clarinet, Willie the Lion Smith on piano (his wonderful and almost-impresionistic touch is recognizable even as an accompanist far behind the vocals) and Gene Brooks on drums. Spinning it for the third time today. So once again, thank you Chris Albertson!
