  1. I thought the alternative title was 'Round About Midnight and Grand Finale'
  2. Are you really 100 ONE MORE YEAR? ¡FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS! Agustín
  3. The earliest recording of "Round midnight" is an acetate Monk recorded for Timme Rosenkranz prior to Cootie's 1944 recording. Cootie didn´t contribute to the tune, and had to pay (around $200) for the rights to use it for a shorter period. It became his band´s theme song. Shortly before, the band´s theme song had been "Epistrophy"(aka "Fly Right"). In 1946, Dizzy Gillespie added his famous introduction and cadenza for his big band arrangement, which proved so popular that Monk added it (an altered version) to his own performance of "Round Midnight."
  4. And one more you´re missing: "It´s you or no one" (SteepleChase LP 12": SCC 6022 ) or (SteepleChase CD: SCCD 36022) or (Video Arts Music CD: VACE-9006).
  5. Albert Haim has posted this on the Bixography Discussion Group (I took the liberty of mixing two different posts by him):

  8. Yes! David Palmquist is doing a great job since he started in the beginning of 2005.
  9. I´ve also bought it at the sale price (for owners of previous versions), but haven´t used it yet.
  10. He was a blues/R&B/boogie-woogie pianist (even recorded with Elmore James). There´s a disc under his name, "88 à la carte" (Crown 5024) recorded in the 50s. AMG review
  11. Guess it´s Alfredo "Chico" Álvarez, a Canadian-born trumpeter who was with Stan Kenton in the 40s and later with Maynard Ferguson.
  12. Obituary by Steve Voce, published in The Independent:
  13. Small photographic hommage to Derek Bailey on Tomajazz: http://www.tomajazz.com/chaminera/bailey_derek_homenaje.htm (pictures taken on February 6, 2005, in Barcelona)
  14. "stoned" as in and not as in
  15. One big for me!!! (and for many others here, I think)
  16. ...taking the risk of being stoned!
  17. I´ve just been confirmed that THIS HAS BEEN A JOKE. Yes, los Santos Inocentes. I´ve been absolutely fooled (and so have been many jazz lovers, readers of Tomajazz) Sorry to have contributed to spread hope on this being released.
  18. I seriously doubt this - David Wild would have mentioned that. He and Michael Cuscuna wrote about the Trane-Wes collaboration in their magazine disc'ribe many years ago and were searching for tapes back then. This would have been known, as sensational as it is. Here´s what ghost of miles wrote, many moons ago... Up. Is anyone familiar with this incarnation of the Coltrane Quartet plus? I often wonder what made Wes' sound a likely candidate. If anyone has heard this group, or has an online source describing the music, I'd be very appreciative if they'd post here. I know it's a topic that's come up numerous times, definitely on the old BNBB and probably here as well. Supposedly there's a low-quality audience tape of a 40 or 45-minute set w/Coltrane and Montgomery from late '61 (Monterey, perhaps?). Supposedly it's not as impressive as we might think. I'd certainly like to hear it if it ever surfaces (somebody on the BNBB reported they'd been offered a copy of this tape for the low, low price of $2,500), but I'm not expecting anything amazing. It's kind of difficult for me to imagine Wes and that late '61 quintet really meshing together--in a way, though, that does pique my curiosity, just to hear how it didn't work as much as how it might have worked.
  19. Here´s an old post from mikeweil transcribing part of that David Wild´s article on this recording: [some remarks on Wes' further career including his collaborations with the Wynton Kelly Trio complete the article] I'd say there may be a recording of the Monterey Jazz Festival performance, if any exist at all, which I doubt, in spite of what has been reported. I simply can't imagine someone turned down an offer to buy any tape of this in whatever inferior sound quality ...
  20. Just read this at Dave Wild´s Coltrane website: (bold letters are mine)
  21. Back to the topic... ...anyone knows if any "illegal" tape of this concert has been circulating?
