It's a valid point, Chuck. -
Listening to the test again, I'm thinking maybe Bill Heid on track one.

Isn't Nicole Mitchell part of the AACM? I know, there are still plenty others.... And being New York, I bet there will always be a bias towards local talent. Still, it is a hell of a series and I wish I could get up there to see some of the performances. -

Sorry for the delay, I need to finalize my responses. 9. Listening to this one again, I'm wondering if it is Toshiko Akiyoshi. 10. I like this one. Starts off soft, then the bass then drums kick in and we're off. Again, I am clueless. Steve Lehman? Or John Carter? 11. Guitar and trumpets. Sounds like Jim Hall on guitar, but ?? on the trumpets. 12. Beautiful playing!!! Kinda Konitzish. But more biting. No clue. Geez, I'm terrible..... 13. Answer already given above in the thread. I'll have to revisit that album.... 14. Beautiful, but again, I haven't a clue.

Popped this disc in this morning. 1. Lonnie Smith? It's got that greasy Turbinator feel. I'm wondering about the sax player as well. Maybe Sam Yahel with Javon Jackson? 2. Pleasant. Ahmad Jamal? I'm not very good at identifying piano players. A bit more aggressive towards the end. Probably McCoy Tyner. 3. I can't identify this tune. Neither here nor there for me. 4. Same here. 5. Pat Martino? I am probably way off.... 6. Grachan Moncur? Sounds nice. 7. My immediate thought was Marcus Roberts as well, but maybe late Earl Hines? 8. Trumpet solo. No clue. 9. Gentle piano --- something from ECM maybe? Paul Bley? Heck, for all I know it could be Brubeck. This is a real blind spot for me.

I don't know if these qualify for being "under the radar," but I think all in their way expands on one's listening experience: Post 1950 classical music that was unlike anything else of its time. Excellent 70s afrobeat music; overshadowed only by Fela. Probably not overlooked in the Latin music community, but should be better known to anyone interested in 60s boogaloo and 70s salsa. One of the masters. Excellent European contemporary jazz.

Bought this over the weekend. Never thought I would find a copy, much less in near mint condition:

Sad. Paul's Boutique is a landmark album. RIP

That's an exciting prospect. I didn't know about this unfinished album. I wonder if it's related at all to the "Birth of The New Cool" project. I seem to recall that Tapscott had wanted different musicians for that session with Sonny Criss (— a session that still sounds great to me). Imagine Arthur Blythe in that setting! At any rate, I really hope The Giant Is Awakened sees reissue. Though I've lived with the music for some time now, it'd be great to hear this recording with the JLH treatment. As with the other IP reissues, I'll purchase a copy on Day One. I haven't heard a note of the Steig, but I'm purchasing a copy of this one too. isn't there a much later live recording of Birth of the New Cool with Blythe in Criss place? (was on some bft here iirc)... and (yes, i mentioned that before) there are apparently loads of unissued tapscott at the ucla library (including more recordings by the band who recorded Giant is Awakened) From the UCLA library site: The Tapscott Archive includes both sound recordings and musical manuscripts documenting the life and work of Horace Tapscott, and the music of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (P.A.P.A.) and the Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA). The recordings include radio interviews, airchecks, concert tours, rehearsals, club dats, studio recording sessions, and performances at educational and other locations with PAPA, UGMAA and Tapscott's various small jazz groups. The music collection includes original compositions and arrangements by Tapscott, and arrangements for other composers.

One of these days I'll have to investigate Spotify.

For me, this is the benchmark: But for the price I would love to hear the Neumann, and I do hear that his cycle is one of the best. This was recorded in the early 70's, right?
-
Jesus! I can't afford NOT to get it. Interesting they omitted this current disc: The Czech Suite is a long time favorite. Good lord, the price just went down on the Dvorak box. $6.39!!! Hasn't shipped yet...... That is... unusual... Hmmm, shipping was "pushed back" to May 10th....... TBC

I've just been on this board way too long to see yet another format squabble. JLH has done a terrific job with the remasters. If he wants to branch out to other formats, cool, but his primary thrust is to get the music out there. And then there is the costs involved...... BTW, no one has beaten Chuck Nessa over the head with wanting to make him release albums from his label in SACD.

Geez, let's not go all Steve Hoffmann in this thread.....

Insight is a very good album.
