I've had this poster for years. This date isn't listed in Peter Losin's Miles Ahead database. Interesting bill - MD Quintet w/Mobley, Jimmy Smith, and Mark Murphy. The band stopped in Buffalo on the way from Chicago to NY, just a little over a week before going into the studio to record Someday My Prince Will Come.

I just checked and don't see a single copy of Live 93 available for sale anywhere online. My disc is defective, the last track, which is an encore performance of So What, abruptly ends at 4'38". It's supposed to go for 7'. Perhaps the whole run came out like that, and they pulled them all..

Anyone else going to the WFMU Record Fair tonight?
Dmitry replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
But hanging out on a bulletin board with a bunch of fellow jazz obsessives is time well spent.... Well-put, Chas! Touche.. A good part of my LP collection came from the WFMU Fairs. Stamina, good knees, intuition, and luck, are the components of success. Haven't been there in the last 4 years, but will definitely return this November. -
Everybody Loves Raymond, Season 8, Episode 10

"This is where I used to listen to 'em [the jazz records]. I'd come home from a hard day's work, your mother would mix me a drink, I'd come down here, put on the hi-fi, and let Duke and Dizzy take me away...from your mother." This line is now an instant classic in the Dmitry household. -
Never thought of record shopping in pawn shops. Live and learn!

I also have this disc, courtesy of vous. Excellent date, and great playing by Lafitte, who appeared in top form. My other GL disc is "Live 93" , which appears to be a rare title. The band is different from the HCF gig, so is the material and the playing, which are in the more modern vernacular. There are two versions of So What and a Waltz For Debby. The HCF set has a more 'small club' quality to the music than the "Live 93".

Are there any dedicated vinyl shops left in your neck of the woods?

Paul, I stopped by Sally's Place today. No vinyl to speak of, but I'll be darn if this is not the only store that I've shopped at in the last 3 years that carries an extensive selection of new jazz cds.Her $2 used stacks are nothing to sneeze at either. I scored a Guy Lafitte disc there. Thanks for the recommendation! Less than 5 years ago there were the stalwart Tower and Virgin, where one could easily spend 2 hours browsing, and to a lesser degree B&N and Borders, and now being in a retail store the size of a New York studio apartment makes for a happening... -

1970s BN Rainbow cover LPs vs. Japanese King LPs

If Kevin is still in touch with M.Cuscuna, perhaps he would be willing to ask him about the history of the LT covers. If one discounts the metaphysical meaning of the photographs, they have a significantly more modern look to them, as opposed to the Lion-era BNs, which could have appealed to the younger consumer, ca.1978-1982. -

I have a few of the SACDs, and I couldn't discern any real difference between the SACD layer and the standard rebook CD layer. The mastering is exactly the same. So do I, and the sonic difference between the sacd and cd is quite audible to my ears. The mastering IS the same, as it is on all hybrid sacds, but the dsd-encoded master-tapes are downsampled to 16/44.1 for the cd layer, whereas the sacd layer presents them au naturel. I'm still amazed how these 60 cds can be had for $2 apiece. Some of these records are landmarks of recorded classical music. -
1970s BN Rainbow cover LPs vs. Japanese King LPs

It is obvious that none of these records, were they released in their time, would have had covers in any way similar to the LT covers. Imho, LT covers are a testament to their time, late 1970s-early 1980s, first and foremost. They don't bother me, Kings don't bother me, the new Analogue Production covers don't bother me. It's all good. -
I've had various tube preamps and amps for over a decade, still do in my main set-up. No fire-retardant suit necessary, but the tubes do get hot, as they're supposed to. I'm not plugging any particular maker or brand here, just like the set sound. In the bedroom I have a 15 y.o. Rotel receiver feeding a pair of B&W 601's, which are somewhat similar to the speakers in question, and it sounds just fine for what it is, a budget stereo. Just noticed that my post from a couple of days ago is gone. Must've pushed the wrong button while editing.

A remarkable collection, near every record is a masterpiece! I would be on this box like fly on honey, if these were SACDs. -
1970s BN Rainbow cover LPs vs. Japanese King LPs

How much did these LT Rainbow series BNs cost at the record stores when new, in the late 1970s-early 1980s? And the Kings? Just curious. -
Wasn't referencing your post. It's an alternative for the OP to consider. We're not all tube fans. Once you hear the Torii amp, you will never use anything else to play music again. I have two Torii hooked up to my Sony TPS-L2 cassette walkman, one for each channel, and the sound is nothing short of revelatory.

This cd is still sealed, therefore mint, w/obi, etc. I have another tocj of this date, and it dances sonic circles around the RVG. $20 post paid. *Will also consider trades for SACDs.

I've just read some of the reviews on Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Collection-Mini-LP-Replica/product-reviews/B001FSDP08/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 and decided to order it. Most people who posted there, say that this is indeed a new remastering, and betters the 1994 cds. I don't have those cds to compare, so I'll have to gauge the quality of these miniLPs on their own merit. Free shipping didn't hurt either! -

Could you please expand on that? Usually Japanese remasters sound very good. I almost ordered it, and I'm not even a fan. I stand corrected; it's a 10-album, 12-cd set. Two of the albums are double-cds. -

A crazy deal on Rhino Led Zeppelin 10 miniLP cd set. I believe this is a Japanese remastering job, which they retail for $174. Price slashed to $87. http://www.rhino.com/shop/product/led-zeppelin-definitive-collection-mini-lp-replica-boxset?xpcid=CROZ&cmpid=CROZEP%3E%20&cmpid=CROZEP -
When a speaker cuts off at 45 dB, it's not 'great sound'. I think it depends on the overall sound of the speaker. I believe that you can have low bass and bad sound, and no low bass and good (even though limited) sound. That goes without saying. One can enjoy very good speakers that don't go down to even 55 Hz [Klipsch Heresy come to mind], but they will really shine with a well-matched subwoofer. Going back to the original post, these 2-way speakers on their stands take up pretty much the same square area as the full-spectrum 3-way speakers, thus negating any room-saving considerations mentioned above. Plus, they have to be moved away from the wall 1-3 feet to achieve any decent bass.
