  1. The 45 rpm vinyl and the corresponding SACDs should sound the same, since the tape transfers are done simultaneously, from the same feed. Whether its indeed the case in reality, I don't know, but theoretically, they should sound analogous[!]. What one may hear on the vinyl vs. corresponding sacds that might make them sound different, are the characteristics and colorations of a particular turntable, tonearm, cartridge and the phono stage.
  2. When a speaker cuts off at 45 Hz, it's not 'great sound'.
  3. Lon, you can hook up 2 Decware amps to these speakers, and they will still produce the low frequency of 42 Hz, at best. Without the subwoofer, these speakers will not reproduce music accurately, no matter what amplifier one has.
  4. I just want to see what's gone out of print. Yhought someone had a list of oop BNs. Or, like John said, I could just browse the BN site, and see what's available. But the new BN site gives me a headache.
  5. I'm with you, Lon. These covers have little or nothing to do with their issued contemporaries. At least they are not offensively-bad and/or in terribly poor taste.
  6. The good old reductio ad absurdum !
  7. Just looked these up. They are so-called bookshelf speakers, which should never be put on bookshelves. They should be placed on stands, with their backs away from the walls at least a good foot or more, since they are ported on the back. Basically what he has is a pair of inefficient 2-way bookshelf speakers with poor/non-existent low frequency reproduction. A push-pull amplifier suggested above, no matter how good, will do absolutely nothing for these speakers, imho. He will definitely need an integrated amp that can drive a subwoofer.
  8. TOCJ-8xxx ? Is this a series I missed? Ahh heck, typo. I meant TOCJ-4xxx - the BN Works series. I really like the sound of these CDs more than any other. Kevin I thought it was a typo, but I haven't paid any attention at all to the reissues in the last 4 years. Time to catch up. Just bought a good sacd player and ordered my first batch of the BN AP SACDs. It's a single disc machine, so I'm not worried about the shuffle feature.
  9. Just in case anyone needs a translation - L.I.Brezhnev - OUR GOAL IS COMMUNISM Takes me back to my childhood. I can swear this is George Russell !!!
  10. Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton boxed set. Box, cds, all packaging are in mint condition. $100 post paid.
  11. Paul, I didn't think you implied vinyl-only in your post. Don't apologize. I shall stop by Sally's this coming Sunday.
  12. Congratulations, and keep 'em spinning!
  13. Thanks, Paul. I'll definitely stop by there!! Never heard of this store before. Along the same route, just off the I-95, there is also a 'Cutler's Records and Tapes', 27 Broadway, New Haven, (203) 777-6271, which carries a small selection of used jazz vinyl and cds, alongside with rock and a decent selection of used classical cds and LPs.
  14. Today on my way home from NY I stopped by the local [35 miles from my town] vinyl-only shop called the Mystic Disc, in beautiful Mystic, Connecticut. http://www.mysticseaport.org/ This was my second time browsing there in the last 5 years. Last time I scored a couple of good LPs, found nothing of interest jazz-wise this time; lots of 1970s-1980s rock/pop LPs in the stacks, some obscure. There were about 10 youths hanging out in and outside the store, talking music and vinyl, which was heartwarming to see. How this place stays in business is a mystery to me. Nevertheless, it's there, and has been for years. Not too far from Mystic is the Book Barn, the second largest used bookstore I've been to, after the Strand in NY. If you are driving down this stretch of I-95, make sure to stop by there, unless you're severely allergic to cats. Prices are insanely low, they carry hundreds of art books, among thousands of other titles. A wonderful, unusual place.
  15. Does anyone care to share? Thanks!

  17. Betcha this ends up costing you more than $50! I came out almost unscaved. Plunked down $13 for the Steve Hoffman-mastered sacd of Sonny Clark's trio w/Duvivier & Roach, which, I bet, sounds better than my old Time/Bainbridge cd. I did peruse the BN book, and it is very good, explicit, with many label photos in color, cover comparisons, all kinds of pressing variations, even the photos of various dies RVG used to stamp the dead wax. I didn't spend a lot of time browsing the book, but I think it goes up to the Liberty period. I ended up not buying it, but $45 will definitely make sense for the collectors. I'll probably pick up a copy later. By the way, I haven't been to the JRC for about 4 years; is it me, or does the proprietor now has 10x more cds in stock than he used to, and way fewer LPs?
  18. I'm planning to pay homage a visit to the JRC tomorrow, will see what's under the wraps. $50 is no chump change.
  19. Is this a Francis Wolff photo?
  20. GA, if they didn't give you any shipping options, then the liability is all theirs, I'd say. Your parcel was probably delivered to the wrong address by your carrier.
  21. Thanks for the explanation. Chuck, the early EMI-made cds were called the 'Collector's Choice' series.
