Are there any box bargains currently available?
Dmitry replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Why would the NC send you a replacement? Did you pay for signature or insured delivery? -
Several posts mention BN cut-outs in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Cut-outs are cds or lps deleted from the label's catalog, as we know. BN would delete cd titles only a couple of years after pressing them?

Phineas Newborn's "Stockholm Jam Sessions" on SteepleChase
Dmitry replied to Bol's topic in Recommendations
I'm of the same opinion as well. I have both, but I've been on a major Newborn kick for a long stretch. Haven't played these 2 cds in years. -
That is indeed the case, imho. Orelia Benskina sounds Russian, but neither the first nor last names are Russian. Benskin sounds more Eastern European Jewish to me. I used to know a Dominican chick named Orelia. My guess would be since the name Rouse can be pronounced R-o-o-s-e, sounding like Russe' [a French way of saying 'Russian'], someone came up with a pun on that.

The first cds I bought were Deep Purple - The House of Blue Light, and Bryan Ferry - Bete Noire. It was in the fall or winter of 1990, in Tower Records on East 4th St, corner of Broadway. Most cds were $11.99, and came in long cardboard sleeves over the jewel boxes. I was making $4.25/hr.

Is this the ne plus ultra of audiophilia - trying to find the best sounding version of music you don't like ?

Just bought this title on a Hybrid SACD from Verve, and compared it to my late 1990s Japanese MiniLP cd. The original recording quality appears to have been far from perfect in terms of the microphone positioning, etc, with only Baker in the middle, while the rest of the band is divided sharply between the r & l speakers, almost not mixing. The horns are on the left, while the rhythm section is on the hard right. For what its worth, the sacd sounds fuller, with more definition, than the Japanese cd, but the difference is not tremendous. I did not play the red book layer of the sacd, so can't comment on its sound. The music itself leaves much to be desired, imho, with Chet's singing lacking in pretty much everything that these songs contained when sung by Billie Holiday, on both the musical, as well as the spiritual levels. Just to pile on, the arrangements are nothing to write home about also. I don't know what the circumstances and purpose of this project were originally, but this is not one of my favorites of Chet's. Perhaps if the whole album [nary 30 min. long] were instrumental, I would have enjoyed it more. Also, the packaging of the Verve SACD sucks; the art department massacred the original cover, cutting off the edges of the original LP cover art, and inside the booklet there are some tasteless cartoons, which are supposed to represent Holiday, the band, etc. The graphics are poor.

Is a rapier a weapon of war, or a weapon for dueling? Or both? And what does it weigh? Rapier developed in the 16th c. as a weapon of costume, self-defense and dueling. It was lighter than the arming sword, and nicely balanced. As the c. progressed, the customary wear of daggers by the upper classes gave way to wearing swords, most often rapiers. In the second half of 16th c. duels with rapiers became near rampant, and numerous fencing schools opened all over Western Europe. Most of the fencing masters were from Italy, Spain and France. If my memory serves me right, somewhere around 6,000 nobles lost their lives to dueling in France during the reign of Henry III. At the end of 16th-turn of 17th. rapier-hilted broadswords came to be used by officers and men of various European armies. These swords had hilts similar to rapiers, but were mounted with much beefier 'cut and thrust' blades. From the middle of 17th c. rapiers gradually fell out of fashion, and were replaced by much lighter and less cumbersome smallswords. This particular piece has a 85 cm. blade, which doesn't appear to have been shortened. Normally one would expect to see 100+ cm. long blades, and 120 cm. wouldn't be unique. It weighs 630 g.

I read that in the early 1990s BN Works TOCJ-15xx and TOCJ-4xxx discs were mastered from the back-up tapes, not the original master-tapes, but can't confirm the veracity of that. I wonder if the difference in sonics was significant between the tapes.
-
Imho, as I/we listen to various multiple sources, the objective begins to blend in and displace the subjective, to a degree, of course. In other words, I know what sounds good and what doesn't sound right to my ears. FWIW, the older BN Works cds have a sonic signature of their own, and do not sound as faithful to the original BN vinyl as we are accustomed to think. They do have a pleasant, consistent sound.

I compared the sonics on the newly-purchased TOCJ-6446 Blues Walk / Lou Donaldson (24bit) [bN1593] to my older BN Works TOCJ-4053 Light Foot / Lou Donaldson [bN4053] , and was quite pleased with the sound of the former. Granted, I was not comparing the different remasters of the same session, but being that the two sessions were recorded only months apart, with almost the same personnel, I was expecting similar sonics. However, the newer TOCJ-6446 sounds more defined, tighter, with crisper delineation between the instruments, and a better sound-stage. The 1993 BN Works cd is in line with the general sound of the series, softer, with a significant instrument spread. FWIW, I preferred the sound of the newer 24-bit TOCJ-6XXX series disc.

I'm sure some of us have a love of collecting objects other than cds and records. For instance, I've been fascinated by old swords for about 8 years. My absolute favorite of this year came right before Christmas. Good Karma! I'll post some shots of it shortly. Post your best collecting finds of this year here, lads. We won't be judgmental! Perhaps you'll even find a collecting buddy.

No offense taken. I've never been embarrassed about my wealth, material or otherwise. What would be the signs of that? And who would assume this dominant role, step into the now vacant cowboy boots, so to speak?

Embarrassing is right. I think I got shafted. My Tea Party indoctrination was to the tune of Lenny Breau playing Blue Moon of Kentucky. Happy New Year to you as well, mate. Hope things are going well down South!

Converting from oil to as heat.
Dmitry replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I did that 2 years ago, and converted to a high-efficiency NG heating unit. Actually, we have two of these babies, one for the hot water, and the other for the heat. They are very small in size comparing to the old boiler and furnace, which is also nice. Utility bills are ~40% of what they used to be, plus you get a thousand or two rebate from the feds. I'm sure they will be extended into the coming year. I also made sure to buy the American-made units. Don't know if it matters to you. -
Tea Party, Nazis, Elvis, Wagner, the mob; all that is missing is a pair of superb tits, and you got yourself a screenplay, kid.
-
Simply that America is on the verge of becoming one big jail for all but a few, and that the mindset that resulted from Elvismusic is a primary tool of the enslavers. And please note that I did not make an exact analogy. I said it was almost like. Am I not being fair to Wagner? If I understand this correctly, you're saying that the music of Wagner precipitated Nazism almost as much as Elvis have precipitated America the way it is today?
-
So did Elvis. Which is, obviously, also a subjective quality. Just to keep the fire going, I don't believe Lennon and McC actually wrote half of the songs that they are credited with. Just a speculation, based on their cumulatively-lackluster post-Beatles output, especially McC's. BTW, I still don't get the Wagner and concentration camp thing. What was that meant to signify? That concentration camp prisoners didn't like Wagner's music?

Beatles had as much of an artificial component to them as Elvis, if not more. In fact, way more, imho.

Elvis also made Barack H. Obama possible.
