Good morning! (Or afternoon/evening for you ) MG -
What music did you buy today?

JATP - Membran Nonexistent sleeve notes; no personnel; tracks dated (not always accurately) by YEAR. Wonderful music, though. MG -
That's not what I meant, Jim. Sure speeding the thing up half a tone will raise the pitch half a tone - but only approximately. If the machine raises middle C by 5.9435%, that note becomes C# exactly. But if someone's playing D, that 5.9435% invrease is going to change the D to a little bit flat of D#; and other notes are going to be a little bit sharp of the note that's half a tone up from them. But maybe these differences are so small as not to be noticeable. MG

I'd like that, too. This arrived this morning: JATP on Membran. No sleeve notes whatever! And trying to go through the Lord discography is terrible. There's a 1950 session I haven't yet identified - but it might not be 1950, because another session has been assigned to the wrong year (the year is all the date you get in this box). Anyway, the music, so far - I'm playing disc 5, which has a lot of Billie Holiday and the 'Perdido'/'Mordido' session (but not 'Endido') - is really nice. MG

He's on a few Johnny Otis albums I've got Back to jazz - Ala (1977) The new JOhnny Otis show - Alligator (1981) Good lovin' blues - Ace UK (1990) Spirit of the black territory bands - Arhoolie (1990) I can't say I ever really dug him particularly. Struck me like he was another Sugarcane Harris - could have been great but got too involved with rock music for my liking. Wasn't surprised when the only times I'd see his name was on his father's records (or the Etta James double LP, Etta being kind of close to the family). MG

The sleeve note to vol 5 of the Ace compilation of the complete Fats Domino Imperial singles contains the following addendum: Now, mathematically this doesn't seem to me to work, because the larger capstan is going to increase the frequency by exactly the same percentage all the time. This table gives the frequencies of 8 octaves of equal tempered notes. http://www.phy.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html The differences between one note and the next one up or down aren't the same. They aren't even the same percentage different. And the differences don't all run in the same direction. ie middle C is 261.63 Hz C# is 277.18 which is 5.9435% bigger D is 293.66 which is 5.9456% bigger D# is 311.13 which is 5.9491% bigger E is 329.63 which is 5.5,9461% bigger That must mean that some notes are slightly not what they're supposed to be - they're out of tune, in other words. So, is the inaccuracy undetectable? Or can some of you musicians tell the difference? MG

The two people I've heard who did this are Sam and Gator. Both opinions come from knowledgeable sources. Personally, my money's on Sam. But... could be Gator. Thanks for chiming in. MG -

Oops, I didn't realize that. I had done a search, and Taylor's name came up in more than one place, but it appears that this info may have been spread from one source (not sure yet where it started). Without a reason to doubt, I accepted what appeared to be correct, which is never a good idea. Perhaps we can get closer to the truth here as more people join in. I hope so, too. I have great hopes that Jim Sangrey will be able to say instantly MG -

Enthusiastic? I'll say. Rugby in Wales is as important as Cricket in England. (Not popular, important.) MG -

There was a compilation of Sam 'The Man' Taylor on Mercury - called 'Swingsation' - there were several with that title, but I only got the Red Prysock CD. I have the Moodsville LP 'The bad & the beautiful' - nice but far from essential, I'd say. Not that I'd ever want to get rid of it. I think he's one of those guys, like King Curtis, whose defining work was in backing R&B artists to perfection. What made you think it was Sam on that Clovers' record? I mean, do you have any evidence to that effect? The Jazz Discog project says that the personnel is all unknown. And there are different views of who it is. MG -

I think I sometimes unconsciously separate things like this in terms of popular music that I narrowly missed growing up with (and feels just slightly alien as a result), versus music from the same general era that I've had a desire to go back and explore, and feel a more positive connection with. In this particular case, although my objective side tells me that this is a lovely tune (and I really did enjoy hearing this version), I can't help but think of all the times I've heard the Bobby Vinton version, and all the times that I've associated this tune with schmaltz. But this is all a game that is played out in my head, and there's no legitimate explanation for some of the negative bias. One of the best things about this game is that I can change my mind whenever I feel like it. Yes, pity about Bobby Vinton's version. It was initially a hit for Frankie Laine and I can't remember it from my youth; but Laine could often sing with passion and feeling, so maybe his version was pretty good. MG Are you sure you aren't thinking of Tony Bennett? I can't find any evidence of a Laine recording. So... back to the bft... The Clovers? Not Frankie Laine; as you say,Tony Bennett. My mind's messed up. Yes, the Clovers. Like to talk about the tenor player? MG -

I'm completely ignorant about football/soccer -- could there be 15 players dressed per team in a game? That'd make it 'a tribute' package. In Canada, we get eggs by the dozen, and there are (in some big stores) packages of 18. You want just 6? Some shops may cut a 12-pack in half for you, and charge 60% of the price... See, it's a small country - 6 eggs is enough for us. Six big eggs - mine were rather on the small side this evening MG -

How long have you to wait? MG 2 years and one term. Long enough to see Gove's 'Forward to the '50s' agenda start to cause havoc. But I'll not be around to have to help put it all back together again. The call of the North Cornish coast gets louder by the day. How long have you to wait? MG 2 years and one term. Long enough to see Gove's 'Forward to the '50s' agenda start to cause havoc. But I'll not be around to have to help put it all back together again. The call of the North Cornish coast gets louder by the day. There was a press officer in my old office who was several years older than me and who counted down the number of paydays before his retirement. I asked him when he started counting down and he said when he was sixteen MG -

Our is a conventional box of six. But I'm pretty sure I've seen larger boxes; certainly a dozen. I think most people here thought Wales would beat England on the 16th of March, (but didn't expect 30-3) so the firm probably planned a celebratory box. Pity Ireland beat Wales; it would have been another Grand Slam. MG -
Just got a box of eggs out of the fridge. Hadn't noticed the packaging before but it tickled me Wales won the 6 Nations rugby competition again this year. MG
