  2. Breakfast with Celestine Ukwu - Ilo abu chi Mango Santamania - La bamba Oliver Nelson - Screamin' the blues MG
  3. No, but Bob produced 'The 78 era' so he may have got it privately from Fantasy back in the day when it existed. I didn't know that. I expect stuff is pricey and will have big money for postage here added. Oh well. MG PS - curiosity got the better of me. There's another copy of the same session in for the spring... Oh, is that it, and it's past tense?
  4. Jazz Crusaders - Hollywood Pepe Kalle & Empire Bakuba - Gerant Panorama des Cayes - L'argent MG
  5. Struth!!!!!! Hope it plays well. That LP, 'Tenor sax favorites vol 3' was the start of Bob Weinstock really comprehending what to do with Jug. Each side is a complete session of preferred takes. After that, there was 'Woofin' n tweeting' then a load of bop jam sessions that were unsuitable for him, but probably fine for parties. MG
  6. Actually, there are a few, but only two - in shopping malls - are usable by decent citizens. We're so behind the times we still have shopping malls in town centres instead of just out in the sticks. MG
  7. The Loving Sisters - A new dimension Temptations - Masterpie Houston Person - Something personal MG
  8. One thing I ALWAYS liked about visiting America was how nice and clean the public toilets are. It's America's greatest contribution to world civilisation. So long as you don't let too many Britons in the country. Ours are shitholes and pissholes for the most part. There are exactly two in Cardiff that aren't. MG
  9. Thanks Mike, that's very helpful. MG
  10. "you have neither taste and/nor ear for the subtleties of bebop harmony" You got me in one sentence Well, truly, I can't, and never could, be bothered with all that shit. MG Oh, and I can't say I like Bud Powell very much. Got one of his LPs; bought in 1985 and played twice since 1987. I do think the art of a great musician is to get through to people who have neither taste nor an ear for its subtleties. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins and many others could. That's enough for me.
  11. The whole of breakfast with MJQ - Dedicated to Connie MG
  12. Depends - some people read a book there. I used to when I was a kid and wanted a bit of peace & quiet. MG
  13. Ray Bryant - Through the years vols 1 & 2 MG
  14. If I see a cheap copy, I may well do. I've only got three Xanadus I like - by Teddy Edwards, Sonny Criss and Ronnie Cuber (the earlier). I do have a few of his Prestige productions, but I'm not as enthusiastic about them as I am about the same artists working with Bob Porter - or even Cal Lampley, who wasn't to my mind a very good producer. So I'm very cagey. about him. Added to the fact that Barry Harris is someone I barely tolerate, it doesn't look promising, so a cheap one i what I might get. MG
  15. Yes, invented in the sixteenth century, I understand. Amazing that people should have given their minds to that in the days of Elizabeth I, Armada, Drake, Shakespeare & etc. MG
  16. Never heard of this before. Don Schlitten was too much of a modern jazz man for me to really like his material, but that looks good, except for Barry Harris, who ain't my type of player. The best thing about Xanadu was the superb sleeves. And that is just wonderful! I'll try to keep it in mind. MG
  17. If it's got a bath in it, it's a bathroom. If it's only got a shower, it's a shower room. If it's only got a toilet, it's a toilet. What could be simpler? It's so logical, it's almost French (Except in France, they call a toilet a WC - in French - double vé cé). MG
  18. Tom Lehrer did it better in '53 I hold your hand in mine, dear I press it to my lips I take a healthy bite from Your lovely fingertips My joy would be complete, dear If you were only here But still I keep your hand As a lovely souvenir The night you died I cut it off I really don't know why For now each time I kiss it I get bloodstains on my tie I'm sorry now I killed you For our love was something fine! Until they come to get me I shall hold your hand in mine! MG
  19. Breakfast groovies Alphadjo Dara - Soutoura Mbilia Bel - Welcome MJQ - Echoes MG
  20. The English language is the most important in the world because it's the most flexxible and useful. And that's because you lot won the War of Independence. As a result, when France and Spain founded Academies to control the French and Spanish languages, England couldn't because the USA would have taken not a blind bit of notice. English is, therefore out of control and ANYONE can add to the language. I dunno about the USA, but we've even got bits of Arabic recently imported into the language - my father-in-law was in Egypt in the second world war and said that's where words like bint and shufti came from. Bint is Arabic for girl, shufti for look (v). In common (ie not among toffs) use in English. MG
