  1. Absolutely. This: spent over two years on the US pop albums chart from the start of '58 to mid-January 60, rising to #3. And I dare say the seven minutes groove of 'Poinciana' had more than a bit to do with it. MG
  2. Just remembered this Which includes the Sesame Street theme MG
  3. That's not the sleeve it comes with. That's the one I originally had and I half-inched it from Discogs because it was the one I had and also the nicest and most fitting. Only my 1968 copy was in glorious mono. MG
  4. Vlach Quartet - Debussy & Ravel string quartets - Supraphon Magic! MANY thanks to Soulpope for letting me know this long gone LP of mine had been reissued. Got a download of it from Amazon. MG
  5. Thank you. Never even thought it would have been reissued. MG PS Downloading it now from Amazon.
  6. For lunch Jazz Crusaders - Hollywood Shleu Shleu - 6eme anniversaire Jimmy Smith - Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf Don't like the cover of this at all. So... MG
  7. Dunno but that track has never appealed to me. MG
  8. Do you have the Debussy/Ravel quartets LP? MG
  9. Breakfast with Fela Kuti - Ikoyi blindness Jr Walker - Roadrunner MJQ - Live at the Lighthouse MG
  10. Yeah, it was similar over here but it was mainly majors who made 'em. A few indies like ARC and the Czech label Supraphon were in there, too, but not many. And some of their stuff was wonderful. I've never heard a recording of Debussy's string quartet I liked better than the one by the Vlach Quartet on Supraphon - and I kick myself weekly for having flogged it! MG .
  11. Yea - CD for me, though I could usually do without Zawinul. MG
  12. Thank you. Well, I've heard of one now. I see his grandfather came from up Cumbria, which is practically in Scotland. Quite right. Diplomat, according to Discogs, was owned by Synthetic Plastics, so isn't the kind of label one would naturally associate with being terribly straight up and down. MG
  13. I wouldn't bet on it. But Lewes is a VERY unusual spelling for a personal name. I used to live in a town called Lewes and I've never heard of a person by that name, not even from there. But I checked the Lord discography and there are zero musicians called Lewes in the index. Nor are there any called Wilson Lewis. So it's an open question. But this has GOT to be mid-sixties stuff and Ramsey was TOO well known and successful to be making anonymous recordings in those days. And he made four of the buggers! SURELY not!!!! MG
  14. This afternoon Tommy McCook & Bobby Ellis - Green mango E T Mensah - Mensah's African rhythms Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis - Swingin' till the girls come home MG
  15. Lots of things can make a difference, including the age and condition of the individual instruments. The point I was making is that people can and do make rubbish recordings anywhere. Of course, sometimes it might be great-sounding rubbish... MG
  16. A great album!!! Breakfast this morning with Oliver Nelson - Screamin' the blues Empire Bakuba - Kabambare Houston Person & Ron Carter - Remember love MG
  17. No magic in ANY recording studio, not RVG's, Cosimo Matassa's, Stax's, not even Roy DuNann's mail room in the Contemporary office. All recorded rubbish sometimes; other times just stuff that wasn't brilliant, other times stuff that knocks your ears off. It's the team of record company staff and musicians wot makes the difference. MG
  18. Back in '67, I had a Wallace Brothers LP - Soul connection on Island I played it a few times but I can't say that it grabbed me, so it went after a few months and I never looked back A mistake? MG
  19. Struth! I haven't seen ANY of those guys live. MG I've just realised that it was the Motown version of 'I keep forgetting' I posted. Here's the original version, which is the one I was listening to. MG
  20. Chief Dr Orlando Owoh - Money palaver Houston Person - Something personal Alhadji Waziri Oshomo - Ota pea pea MG
  21. "Politics is about the pursuit of a particular ideology as manifested through specific policy." Sorry, that's nonsense. There are three different kinds of politics. 1 Office politics - which is about a person getting themselves into a position they want to occupy in their organisation. 2 Party politics - which is about getting the representative(s) of your party elected. 3 Government politics - which is about how an organisation can govern. Anyone working for a large organisation can play 1 - including junior politicians trying to get themselves up a bit. Party members play 2 - and their opponents (including media organisations) Civil servants and their political masters play 3 - and their critics, mostly those who thing they get a hard time from them. In my view, 1 and 2 are games; only 3 is real politics. I don't EVER see any posts dealing with 3. What's here is a game. Not sure why people think it's important. MG
  22. I keep meaning to get more of those Hi albums of his. Only got 2, so far. MG
  23. Yeah - I always liked Little Milton. Now playing Red Garland - When there are grey skies Mbilia Bel - Keyna Rev Charles Nicks - He's so real MG
