Actually, I was born in Edinburgh (Scotland) - my mother was there on a shopping trip; brought up in Brighton, Leeds & London (all England); and have lived a bit more than half my life in Wales. So, I'm not. Anything. Really. All right, I still FEEL English. I think the remarks in the NYT article do actually say quite a lot, taken together, about being English (not British). Bill Bailey's remarks about the weather - particularly the rainy season starting in the fourth century and not being over yet - are also true for the Scots & Welsh. Not being conformist is nearer the answer than anything, I think. It's like the scene in "Life of Brian" where Brian is standing in the window addressing the multitudes: "You're all individuals!" "Yes, we're all individuals," the crowd yells back in unison. "I'm not," comes the answer from some bloke in the crowd. So HE's English. all the others are American MG

You're probably Wright, but I had to ask. Not a lot. He was with the Sunset Travelers. This is what it says in the Hayes & Laughton Gospel discography. One of those OVW sides uses an alterntive take from the single Peacock 3039 of the same two songs. As far as I can see from a catalogue inside various MCA reissues of Peacock material, MCA never reissued the Sunset Travelers' LP. Someone called Mobile Fidelity has issued the whole of PLP122 on a 2 CD compilation with LP 164 (by Julius Cheeks) and PLP181 (Swan Silvertones materil believed to have been recorded by Vee-Jay but not released by them). Good compilation by the looks of it. That's being offered by four Amazon UK sellers at prices from £87.67 (about $175) to £129.99 ($260). No way do I have the money for this right now, but DAMN! Nor I, but damn too! But seriously, this ain't all that good vfm; $2 per track or a pound a track roughly; $28 (or £14) per album. Yes, it'll be superbly presented. And yes, O V Wright was, in my view, the greatest male soul singer. And yes again, this stuff is so good it hurts. And I've only got 18 of the tracks (now) (plus the complete Hi material). And, sure, you're paying for rarity - particularly the Goldwax stuff - but I don't. Someone is trying to make too much money out of this for me. I'm going to send Hiroshi a note to see if he can do it cheaper. MG

I love that album; yes, it's the instrumentation that does it. Never thought of the Sonny Criss in that connection but I guess it does have quite a bit in common with that. But it's also that the way Duke Pearson handles these instruments is quite unlike the rest of his work; much as I like Pearson's arranging for Stanley T and others, it's quite smooth. The arrangements here are every bit as visceral and in your face as Tapscott's for Criss a couple of years later. I'm still using the Rainbow edition. I dare say that, as others have said, there are better sounding versions but, for me, the way the Rainbow one sounds seems absolutely correct for what the music is. MG

When I went to Rapidshare, there were all these options of different softwares to choose from. Did I miss something? Sure they were software options, Al? I thought those options were different routes or servers or something. When I used them, one of them was marked as the preferred one and I just used that. MG

Green Onions is on "Uniquely Mancini," if I'm not mistaken. But you REALLY need both volumes of "Peter Gunn," if you don't have them already. Well, I bought "Peter Gunn" on 45 in 1959, and "Mr Lucky" whenever that came out. And really liked them. And every so often, I'd hear something, like "Green onions" or "Pink panther" and think - "Corrrr!" But then I'd think, yeah, but it's that bald middle class suit geezer Henry Man-fuckin'-cini. So that's how I never bought any of his LPs. But of course, anyone who, with all the tenor players in LA to choose from, picks Plas Johnson, has got to be some kind of genius, isn't it? MG

You've just reminded me of Henry Mancini's version, which was on the B side of "Peter Gunn theme"; must have been about the first time I heard Plas Johnson (or was that Ernie Freeman's "Night sounds"?). This is giving me a yen to get some Mancini. Which was the Mancini LP with "Green onions" on it? MG
