  1. I'm getting the feeling that WFAN is a station for sports; is that right? MG
  2. Yes, he wasn't funny, but he was marvellous at what he did. MG

  6. Oh yes. Thanks for that memory. MG
  7. Dunno what your standard is for a standard, Porcy, but AMG gives 119 recordings of "Stolen moments". They're not all the Oliver Nelson tune, but most are. (Is this going to work?) p=amg&sql=17:1466032 (no) Reminded me that I also have Sonny Criss' version, on "The joy of sax". MG
  8. I didn't get too many when I searched for "milt buckner" on Amazon.com. What does advanced search do that search doesn't, Dan? MG Well, I doubt it will "find" Milt Buckner releases but you can put in "black & blue" under label and see most of those "Definitive" reissues. Oh, I see. Thanks Dan. MG
  9. Oliver re-recorded it for East Wind, in 1975. Issued in the US on Inner City. The other members of the band were Bobby Bryant - tp, flg Jerome Richardson - picc, fl, sops Buddy Collette - fl, ts Bobby Bryant Jr - fl, ts (I think this was his first recording) Jack Nimitz - bars Mike Wofford - p, el p Chuck Domanico - el b Shelley Manne - d I love that session. Thanks for reminding me. MG

  11. Yes, good enough for me on those terms. MG
  12. Well, bol say that the single of "Mi nina Lola" is a big hit in Spain, so I guess WB are hoping it'll take off across Europe. Sometimes these things do that. (Actually, I thought that was the weakest song of the whole bunch, though weakest is highly relative. Still very good.) MG
  13. Not even for chicken soup? ('Course, you only boil the carcass, after you've eaten the chicken.) MG
  14. I think, if I'd seen the cover of her new album, "Mi nina Lola" without hving heard anything of her, I'd still have wanted to buy it straight off. You DO get a vibe off that photo. I guess, speaking Spanish, you're getting even more out of this than me, Jim. It seemed to me that there was a fair amount of politics/social/ethical issues in her songs - in a sense another connection to Africa. Am I right about that? MG
  15. Just noticed there are two copies of "Green onions" in the e-bay auction. And the seller is in UK, so that's probably the place to deal with. If there are two copies, then I suppose you get a record even if you DON'T win? SO the strategy is to come second, and get it a bit cheaper than the winner MG
  16. Milt was a great organist - in the pre-Jimmy Smith vein, of course. Applied his "locked hands" method of playing piano to the organ. Was so short, his feet couldn't reach the bass pedals when he was sitting on the stool. Two heavily recommended examples of Milt from here are Illinois Jacquet - Go power (live trio, Jacquet, Buckner & Alan Dawson - play very loud) - Cadet, not too hard to get I imagine. Milt Buckner - Green onions - Black & Blue (with Roy Gaines - blues guitarist from Texas) MG I've seen 'Go Power' floating around different places before, but never pulled the trigger. Where's the easiest place to find Black & Blue albums? I dunno 'bout Arizona, man. Surprisingly hard to find. I tried a number of US on line stores - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, CD Universe, Dusty Groove, Jazz record mart - zilch. It's not at Amazon.uk or .fr or at Blue Moon (the firm that distributes B&B) or at my other usual French ports of call. But I've found this at FNAC http://www4.fnac.com/Shelf/article.aspx?PR...96e8d7&Fr=0 The trouble is, the image is too small to see the title - but I think it's the second reissue of "Green onions" and there's no track list. However, you can listen to the tracks - if the first one is "Green onions", that's it. But when I tried to listen, Windows gave me some spiel about not knowing what the thing was, so I gave up. If you've got some other kind of software (I alway have problems listening to samples), you might come up trumps. Otherwise, there's e-bay. Ah! The one at FNAC is the right one, but it's also on e-bay France http://cgi.ebay.fr/MILT-BUCKNER-GREEN-ONIO...VQQcmdZViewItem It's also on the UK e-bay - same disc. Auction ends 25 Sep. Price, at moment, is excellent for a deleted album. MG Dunno why the uK link didn't come out. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MILT-BUCKNER-GREEN-O...1QQcmdZViewItem
  17. Right click the download button Select "Save Link As..." Call it what you want to, but make it a .mp3 file. That'll do it right there. Great interview, btw. I love hearing musicians talking about stuff besides music, and it sounds like Lou really knows his sports. And Tony Paige don't seem to be no dummy either. Great interview! Thanks Jim; coming down the turnpike now. MG
  18. I suspect the problem is that we've learned (or some of us have) lessons too well from this and other atrocities. We've learned that people can be manipulated into doing such things. And some of us think this is an opportunity, rather than a disaster. And THAT, I think, is the real problem. MG
  19. Well, there are fifteen complete tracks up on the Bol website and I've just finished listening to them. And I HAD to order three of her albums, didn't I? Most of the tracks on the site come from these two albums This is her jazz album, apparently the first one she recorded, but didn't release at the time. All, apparently, duets with piano. Come on Amazon.uk, hurry up and deliver! MG
  20. CONCHA BUIKA I’m listening to Concha Buika, for the first time, on the “Breath of life” website. The lady started off recording House music, and there are a couple of great tracks here. Then we have a track from her jazz album, “My one and only love”, beautifully sung accompanied only by piano – nowhere to hide. And I’m thinking, “this woman can bloody well SING!!!” Then on comes the first track from her album, “Mi Nina Lola”. Good God! She could have had either of two successful careers as a House or Jazz singer. But she gave it up to do something NEW! And something WONDERFUL! I’m sitting here in front of the computer, screwing around on my chair like Monk used to when he was really feeling the groove. And I’m listening to her singing “New Afro Spanish collective”, and yelling, and crying with joy! This is REALLY the STUFF! Such exultant music! Some kind of combination of Flamenco, Jazz, Hip Hop. Track after track comes on and each is different, each has this new thing, each is like a six inch nail driven lovingly through my forehead! I’m gasping for a ciggie, but can’t move away from the computer! At my age, this is BETTER than sex! Get a LISTEN to this lady! This beautiful lady, I might add. http://www.kalamu.com/bol/ These tracks will only be there until Saturday evening, so don't mess around. MG
  21. How do you download that? It's half an hour long. I hit the download button, but it just fired up Windows Media Player and played it. MG
  22. Yes indeed. And what, I wonder, does the Amazon browse algorhythm make of various Organissimo members browsing in order to pick up links for the "Sexiest album cover" thread? MG
