  1. That's what I said. Well, it depends what you're studying them FOR. You certainly wouldn't expect to get lessons in how do do something. Poor and average are probably (certainly) bad expressions to use. I tried, by talking about Texas tenor players, to illustrate what I meant. I'm not sure there's a word that encompasses it. MG
  2. My girl friend, at the time it came out, and I used to REALLY get it on to "Ascension". MG
  3. I'm surprised no one's noticed Gleaman is another pseudonym for our (suspiciously) friendly Universal spammer. MG
  4. Mike Cox Buddy Holly The Big Bopper
  5. Bill Oddie Tim Brook-Taylor Graeme Garden
  6. It's going to be a jazzy Christmas in Japan this year. One new release! MG
  7. What's RM stand for? Real Music? I've got "Hoochie coochie man" on a twofer with "Mojo", but could do with "Virginia Woolf" - part 2 of that (I had it on a 45) really takes off! MG
  8. The PRLP number in the dead wax is in the same handwriting on the Esquires as on the Prestiges. Did RVG put those on, or was it done later in the process, when Prestige had sorted out things like, whether they were going to release it and what the catalogue number was going to be? MG
  9. The rules are the same for all European Union countries, including the U.K. Yes, but when my Mosaic Select came through yesterday, Mosaic had declared a value of $15 (3x$5). So, no customs dues. I think that's the first time they've done that. For foreign customers, it's probably better than cut price post & packing MG
  10. Guitar Slim Guitar Junior Guitar Crusher
  11. I always wondered what the L series was. I kind of suspected 12" 45s, issued in the 80s. MG
  12. One wonders what she did to the other woman... MG
  13. That's a very strange-sounding box. I can see why it was put together like that but isn't there a big disconnect between the Prestige sides and the Pablo sides? There must have been 25 years or so between them. MG
  14. Fabuloso! I think he makes what could have been material that was rather like that of Gerald Wilson (not that that's bad, of course) sound and feel radically different. MG
  15. Just checked my old Esquire version of Jug's "Bad bossa nova". It looks like they sent stampers, the things they use to press the records. In the dead wax, there's the Prestige master number PRLP whatever, and also, "VAN GELDER". So an Esquire Prestige is essentially the same thing as a Prestige Prestige, though perhaps with a different vinyl mixture - the Esquires are quite heavy records. MG
  16. Got the Onzy Matthews Select yesterday. Really pleased to do so. Very nice stuff, a bit along the lines of Gerald Wislon, but more raw and brash - Clifford Scott makes a difference there, I think. MG
  17. You're right, but in this instance, they picked up the story from the Metro. That's not a reputable news source, as I said earlier, but it's by no means in the same league as the Onion. MG
  18. Mosaic Future Projects page The Hampton includes his 1937-1941 Victor sides, but not his Decca recordings. Thanks. MG
  19. Lovely! And well done! MG
  20. Please remind me what these two are. Is the Hampton the Victors and Deccas from the thirties/forties? MG
  21. I don't know whether this story is true or not, but the Metro, the paper in which it was reported, is a free paper which is made available in buses, NOT a reputable news source. Still, if it's not true, you're all witnessing the birth of new urban legend. MG
  22. James Oscar Dr Lonnie Johnny "Hammond"
  23. The latest version of the Lord lists 140 recorded versions of the tune! Wow! BTW I just noted that shortly it will realise the latest version on cd-rom. http://www.lordisco.com/ Definitely a must have for any jazz fan. I think the consensus is that it's good but not THAT good - sawfly spensiv. MG
  24. I'm an O V Wright man myself. Haven't really got into Donny Hathaway. (Yet.) But I have a couple of things he did with Roberta. MG
