  1. Oh, I have one or two of that series. Thanks Chuck - one to look out for. MG
  2. Prime Minister Blair was visiting a primary school and he visited one the classes. They were in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings. The teacher asked the Prime Minister if he would like to lead the discussion on the word "tragedy". So the illustrious leader asked the class for an example of a "tragedy". One little boy stood up and offered: "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field & a tractor runs over him and kills him, that would be a 'tragedy'". "No," said Blair, "that would be an accident." A little girl raised her hand: "If a school bus carrying fifty children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy." "I'm afraid not," explained the Prime Minister "that's what we would call great loss." The room went silent. No other children volunteered. Tony searched the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of tragedy?" Finally, at the back of the room, a small boy raised his hand...In a quiet voice he said: "If the air plane carrying you and Mrs Blair was struck by a "friendly fire" missile & blown to smithereens, that would be a tragedy. "Fantastic!" exclaimed Tony Blair. "That's right. And can you tell me why that would be tragedy?" "Well," says the boy "it has to be a tragedy, because it certainly wouldn't be a great loss and it probably wouldn't be a f ***ing accident
  3. Turned up in the post yesterday morning. Amazing compilation of HEAVY FUNK from Ghanaian bands most of whom I'd never heard of. The BOOTY-BUTT-EST music ever! (And there's a volume 2!) Many thanks to Rod for this recommendation! MG
  4. Just listening to this and really wanting it on a CD. A great album from 1957, recorded by RVG but not at home. Issued by Toshiba in Japan on BNJ 61013, and dropped out of sight? MG
  5. Terrific! Deserves its own thread Brownie! MG
  6. I'm with FFA...in the sense that it's not the tune...it's who's playing it. Sure we all have our favorites, ect. Mine seem to change over time. That's the great thing about music. One thing I know for sure is, that my favorite players...I like every tune they play on. I stayed away from this thread because I didn't like the concept. I just checked it out for the hell of it and Soul Stream and FFA have it exactly right. i hoped that more jazz standards would be noted, and not just pop standards One thing that's notable in the thread is that, not only are people not mentioning too many jazz standards, but zero Soul Jazz standards have been mentioned. I am really surprised people haven't been down on "Way back home", "Freedom jazz dance", "Cold duck time", "Sister Sadie", "Chitlins con carne", "Dat dere", "Mercy, mercy, mercy", "Comin' home baby" etc etc. I wonder if that's because people really like them or if they just don't care. 11. A stereo groove is different on each side. A mono groove is the same on both sides. If a 78 - or any mono record - gets damaged, it might be worse on one side of the groove than the other and that will translate into a stereo sound. And yes, it's the same with a stereo cartridge. MG
  12. Yes, this is the track from "Shape of jazz to come". Not the same tune as the Horace Silver tune from "Song for my father". MG
  13. Cissy Houston Whitney Houston Dionne Warwick
  14. By becoming Canadian, one can achieve this ! But the weather's even worse in that part of Canada than it is here! MG
  15. Jake the Peg Wingy Manone Long John Silver
  16. Thanks Mike, I thought there were three. MG
  17. I think Earland's Mercury material is somewhat misunderstood. "Phire" on "Odessey" is another good jam, as are a number of tracks on "Perceptions". MG

  21. Why do you spend so much time looking for Birthday threads? How many threads are there with the word "Smith" in the title? How many beans make nine? MG
  22. The big caveat, of course, is that track timings on LP sleeves weren't always accurate (and CDs). Anyway: Leaving this planet 7.29 Red clay 7.05 Warp factor 8 6.18 Brown eyes 12.50 Asteroid 6.51 Mason's galaxy 7.17 No me esqueca 7.41 Tyner 6.03 Van Jay 8.55 Never ending melody 9.45 MG

  24. http://video.google.com/ ? When you're as big and ubiquitous as Google, sometimes you forget what you already have. Not sure they have much. I tried the link and searched for Sonny Stitt, knowing there are quite a few Stitt videos on Youtube. Nowt came up. Ditto for Grant Green. MG
