  1. Allen Lowe wrote this in response to Chewy's thread about bebop in the late 60s. "anyway back to the point - they probably weren't playing much bebop in the late 1960s - was one of the worst times for jazz employment. Hence recordings like Lou Donaldson's Hot Dog. Funky time..." I don't believe this. So, following the thread about the top '70s albums, let's have your top Bebop and Hard Bop albums from the late '60s. My selections? Oh dear... I'm clearly not the best person to ask Well, there are some ace Sonny Criss albums from that period Up up and away I'll catch the sun Sonny's dream Rockin' in rhythm Dexter Gordon - Tower of power & More power Cedar Walton - Cedar (plus several others I haven't got) Booker Ervin - Some of the Books - not sure of all their dates Hampton Hawes - Here & now; The seance; I'm all smiles And that's without looking at the Mobleys, Morgans, McLeans, Hutchersons, Hancocks & etc on Blue Note. 4. This one turned up in the post this morning - thanks to Luca, whose BFT put me on to George Garzone. Next one on my CD player. MG

  9. MG, I have certainly learned a lot from your posts about soul jazz, and have picked up some great albums based on your recommendations--maybe we can all return the favor here. Already doing it Bought lots more Bebop & Hard Bop this year than usual. MG

  14. Interesting to see how far from most people's taste mine is; of all the albums posted in this thread so far, I've only actually got 15 (though a few have been mentioned more than once). MG
  15. I think Soulstream is undervaluing this album. Charles' version of "Christo Redentor" is THE version. He's truly preaching on this one and this cut alone is worth the price - whatever the price. It's the TRUE melding of Soul Jazz and Gospel - even more than "Where it's at". MG
  16. Clare Fischer - Surging ahead - UK Fontana mono MG
  17. Material seems to be slightly broader than Stax - "Back at the chicken shack" and the JBs "Doin' it to death" are included. I am greatly looking forward to it. Fortunately, I can't play emusic samples, so I have the delight of a couple of weeks anticipation. MG
  18. Ruby, who didn't take her love to town Ann Diamond, who took a drop too many Pearl Bailey, who did the same
  19. Danger Man The Prisoner Patrick McGoohan
  20. Looks like I've missed it. No trace on the link you posted a few days ago. MG
  21. Is this the Swiss label TCB? I have two CDs on that label, both by Bubba Brooks. "Smooth sailing" has Kenny Drew Jr and Peter Bernstein and a rhythme section both called Washington and is a thoroughly good Soul Jazz album. "Polka dots & moonbeams" has Lonnie Smith, Jack Wilkins and Persip and is an album I love very mucho. MG
