  2. I was going to say "Chitlins con carne" and "Wavy gravy". Perfect for your present instrumentation. There are also a couple of good Joe Henderson grooves that sound like they might have potential: "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" and "Caribbean fire dance". MG
  3. I got the Quebec and Mobley when they came out and the Griffin a week ago. The Griffin was the only one I didn't already have on LP and I greatly enjoyed it. Only listened once so far. MG
  4. I thought that would be obvious. Liner notes tend not to criticize the performer--ergo, if one has reservations about the music on the record, one should decline the assignment. On the other hand, if one isn't exactly rolling in dough... Remember, too, that most liner notes written 40-50 years ago were little more than shallow blurbs, often written by disc jockeys whose knowledge of jazz came mainly from reading silly notes written by other disc jockeys who, in turn.... well, you get the picture. I dug out the sleeve notes to "Arriba! con Montego Joe" and gave them another read in the light of this thread. I must say, you did a damn good job on them, with a very detailed rundown of Joe's career and also decent mentions of Al Gibbons, Chick Corea, Eddie Gomez, Robert Crowder, Leonard Goines, Milford Graves and Rudy Stevenson. Some pretty talented musicians in there. It was always particularly gratifying to know that, at the time of writing, Joe was backing a belly dancer at Chicago's Playoy Club. That's the sort of thing one REALLY needs to have in sleeve notes. I like this album, though not as much as "Wild and warm". And I do like: "As always, the music speaks best for itself but there are certain pertinent facts concerning the individual tracks that might enhance your listening pleasure." (My emphasis) You can almost (now) hear the unwritten parenthetical clause "although they didn't enhance mine". I don't have any Byrdie Green albums, despite the presence of Johnny "Hammond" Smith. Anyone like to quote bits of those at us? MG
  5. One of my favourites is Chris Connor. In addition to the ones mentioned earlier, there are: Chris in Person - live at the VV with a quartet featuring K Burrell A jazz date with Chris Connor - basic vibes, p, g, b, d plus ocasional latin perc, and the odd contrib from Joe Wlder, Sam Most, Al Cohn & Lucky Thompson. Chris Craft - p, g, b, d plus flute, English horn or bass clt on some tracks. The last 2 were, and maybe still are, available on one CD from Rhino. There is some great Della Reese on ABC with small groups. Best is Della Reese Live - (done in a studio) with Bobby Bryant, Bill Doggett, Gerry Wiggins, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis & Shelley Manne. Actually, Della's 5 ABC albums (plus unissued) would make a great Mosaic Select. I just got a couple of weeks ago Confessin' the blues by Billie Poole. A very nice album with Burrell, Mance, Cranshaw & Roker - on OJC. Almost all Etta Jones' albums are with small groups. Almost all are very great indeed. Then there is the fabulous Irene Reid - who is perhaps the most typical of all Soul Jazz singers. She made 3 for Savant with Charles Earland's band, all featuring Eric Alexander: Million dollar secret Ain't doin' too bad The uptown lowdown After Earland died, she made two more with Bobby Forrester on organ: Movin' out One monkey don't stop no show But since Forrester died, she hasn't recorded. 6. Note to wife - we must emigrate to Texas. MG
  7. Bobby "Blue" Bland Wynonie "Mr Blues" Harris Blue Mitchell
  8. Nope - first reissue as far as I know since it came out 40 odd years ago. Don't think it even came out on LP in Japan. MG
  9. Still awaiting mine.. And I'm still waiting. MG This one's really worth the wait - I'm listening to disc 8, the session with Don Patterson and Paul Weeden followed by the latin date with Thad Jones. Nice change of pace from the quartets! The Patterson stuff is the reason I'm buying the box! MG
  10. Superman lover Johnny "Guitar" Watson Redman
  11. What! Incredible. Is it this one you've heard? Or this one? Mind you - I think they're both highly greasy. MG PS - I guess you'll be familiar with their work with Pucho & co.
  12. time for the if you could only keep one Green (Jones, Davis, endless possibilities) in your collection which one would it be thread... (Grant Thad Lockjaw for me i suppose) Grant, Boogaloo Joe, Lockjaw for me. (Just as well you didn''t mention Smith.) MG
  13. You and Ubu are talking about different Greens. But it's still true that both Bennie and Grant worked very well with strong tenor players. Bennie's work with Jimmy Forrest, Jug, Ike, Griff, Eric Dixon and Stanley are among his best recordings. MG
  14. I think all of the above apart from 'Congo Lament' have previously been out as Conns. They all need to be available again though. The Harold Vick in particular. Not sure 'Congo Lament' has ever been on CD (I have an LP of it with the weird monkey-in-earmuffs jungle scene ). Good music though ! Actually Congo Lament is partially issued on the excellent Bennie Green Mosaic Select (five tracks with Ike & Turrentine on tenor, with Green, Sonny Clark, Milt Hinton & Art Blakey). Cuscuna states in the liners that these sides and three quartet tracks were issued in 1985 as "Easy Living" on BST 84103. I would love to hear those quartet tracks also, described by MC as "among his (Quebec's) finest moments on tape". I have Easy Living on CD - 8 tracks. I don't know if BST 84103 ever was actually released. My CD shows a release date of 1987. Number on the "spine" is CDP 7 46846 2. BTW the music is all excellent. The LP did come out, in Britain at least. I bought a copy in 1988, but gave it away when I got the CD with the complete session the following year. It's another that was supposed to be released back in the day, but never was. That mean that there should be some proper Reid Miles cover art lying around for it. I really dislike the colour scheme of the album (both LP & CD). What's on the Bennie Green select is the whole of what was issued as "Congo chant" in the LT series. MG
  15. No, but this goes near the top of the list for sure. A great disc that is not to be missed is Very Saxy which features Ricky Ford on one disc and Houston Person on the other. I wonder if Plas and Red play together or separately. Where can Very Saxy be purchased?? Thanks. Doesn't look like it can at present. I've been looking around for a couple of months and tried all the French online dealers I know. They all say it's out of stock. For an album that's only been out a bit over a year... MG
  16. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...22&hl=crash Thanks Dan - that was all well before I joined. Glad to know it got the stamp of so many members' appro. MG
  17. Still awaiting mine.. And I'm still waiting. MG
  18. Cactus Jack Arnold Schwarzenegger Ann-Margaret
  19. V nice Now try Dinah Washington's "Long John blues". "Well I went to Long John's office And I told him the pain was killing. Well I went to Long John's office And I told him the pain was killing. He told me not to worry That my cavity just needed filling." Etc, etc MG
  20. I've got a Project - a nice little thing that plays shellac as well as vinyl. MG

  22. He was saying that Baby Face was signed to Chess after the Argo LPs, but Chess wouldn't record him? Or was he signed earlier but Chess never recorded him? I was very happy to secure a copy of Baby Face's Vee Jay 45, Why/Can't Keep From Loving You. He doesn't sound like an instrumentalist who can just carry a tune, but has a strong Charles Brown/Ray Charles thing going on. I still can't decide if the dominant influence is Brown and I hear Ray only because they both came out of the church, or if Baby Face was influenced separately. Now if I could just find that other 45 he recorded on Hollywood Records. No - Argo was one of the Chess brothers' labels. I don't know which Chess wouldn't let him record. MG
  23. CD Baby just notified me that the new Rhoda Scott is back in stock! That was quick. Order gone in, also for the album advertised on the same page featuring Lonnie Smith that I hadn't heard of. MG
  24. It is a total blast! Particularly the Mar-Keys trax. MG
