  17. Thanks for that, but it wasn't quite what I meant. All CD players have to play at varying speeds. The CD player reads the disc from the inside to the outside (so it turns anticlockwise viewed from above). The data bits take up the same amount of physical space whichever track they're in so, there's less data in the inner tracks than the outer ones. To get the music coming out at the right speed, the CD player has to constantly slow down. What I meant was that, given how cheap many CD players are, is it known that some brands are inaccurate in the way the Rega P3 is? MG
  18. It's such a well balanced album. All kinds of different tempos and material. And yet it all works so well together. Apparently, it only cost about $2,500 to produce! MG
  19. The time's OK here. The board says it's 13:09 and my watch says 13:12. So... MG
  20. I really like Heid. I've got all the Savant's, but not "This is my rifle", which I didn't hear about until it was out of print. He's also put one out called "Blues on the road" on the Corona label, according to AMG - though this might be another AMG album that doesn't exist. He's made a few Blues & R&B albums, too. Two with Johnny Bassett, a very nice Detroit bluesman, of which one is still in print on Fedora and is really very nice indeed. Heid plays piano on this. Here's another good Blues album wot Bill dun And here's his own not quite Blues, not quite R&B, not quite jazz album that I like very much indeed. He also sings on it and plays different keyboards. It says somewhere that Bill is in the Guinness Book of Records as having hitch-hiked over a million miles looking for rare blues records. You can tell he found a few Mucho sense of humour in everything he does, I feel. The sleeve to "Dark secrets" is a good example. I like this one best - don't forget he's a big Don Patterson fan as well as Larry Young. MG
  21. It's Eric Gale's birthday today, so I'm playing Eric Gale - Forecast - Kudu UK edition Eric Gale - Ginseng woman - UK CBS edition Eric Gale - Part of you - UK CBS edition Eric Gale - Touch of silk - UK CBS edition Stuff - More Stuff - WB original Stuff - Stuff it - WB original MG
  22. A lot of "organ" records in general are pretty predictable. And I (obviously) LOVE the instrument! The music's supposed to fulfil a social objective, which doesn't place as high a premium on surprise as it does on community unity. MG
  23. You can. It depends on the mastering (or remastering). It shouldn't happen (unless intentional) with something that was recorded digitally from the start, but when tape or turntables (vinyl, shellac etc) are involved speed diffferences between machines can caused pitch problems. If the person doing the digital transfer is aware and takes the trouble to correct it (JRT Davies did) then the finished product should be accurate. BTW, many early turntables had variable speed to allow for pitch correction. No, what I meant was, do CD players run at different speeds, as well as turntables? MG
