  1. PS - there's no such thing as non-political poverty. MG
  2. This article is probably right but the last paragraph indicates what's really going on. If more blacks are leading successful lives than ever before, they're supposed to be the leaders Herbert says are lacking. Why aren't they the leaders? Could it be because they're on one side of the ever widening and deepening chasm between the rich and poor in America? And the felons and those on whom they prey are on the other side? So who is responsible for the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer? MG
  3. This BBC report reads a bit strangely. If Pluto's orbit overlaps with Neptune's, then Neptune hasn't cleared its orbit of other objects. So Neptune doesn't qualify either. MG
  4. No, she is not. The Doris Duke of Falcon Lair was a famous heiress. This is the Wikipedia article on her: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doris_Duke Never heard of that lady, but I don't know many heiresses. But I was glad to be right that the name rang a bell with me. It's so annoying when you can't exactly recall the connection. MG
  5. Lawrence of Arabia Steve Lawrence Eydie Gorme
  6. Perhaps this one? Lonnie Smith Quintet Dave Hubbard (ts) Ronnie Cuber (bars) Lonnie Smith (org) Larry McGee (g) Marion Booker (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, December 19, 1969 5713 Twenty-Five Miles Blue Note rejected 5714 Seven Steps to Heaven - 5715 Psychedelic Pi - 5716 Original Latin Blues I don't think so - that stuff was mostly rerecorded a fortnight later for the LP "Drives". Obviously Joe Dukes made all the difference! MG
  7. I KNEW she rang a bell with me. Is this the same lady? MG
  8. Les Baxter Martin Denny Arthur Lyman
  9. Van Morrison Rudy van Gelder Hoss Cartwright
  10. That Lonnie Smith one - 4371 - is odd, because there aren't any unissued Smiths on BN. Perhaps it was supposed to be for the Club Mozambique session. MG
  11. Orson Welles Far Wells Mill Valley
  12. All morning so far Blue Mitchell - now on disc 3 MG
  13. I never knew that. But I always thought the base colour of "Blue John", judging solely by the illustrations on subsequent BJP LPs, would be a bit nearer to the blue on "The way I feel". I was a bit disappointed when I got the LP in '85 or '86, whenever it was. MG
  14. Garfield Sylvester Jerry
  15. Dr Spock Arthur "Babe" Clarke Roosevelt "Baby Face" Willette
  16. I think one that's been missed is Stanley Turrentine's "Jubilee shout" - haven't noticed it being posted. The Leo Parker was incredible to see on those inner sleeves. I'd never heard of him at the time but I WANTED that album! MG
  17. Indeed it is. I'm going to have to start blocking www.mosaicrecords.com. I've only got myself set up for Paypal today. Haven't bought anything yet. Why is Paypal easier than credit card? MG
  18. Lady Godiva Mary Godwin Frankenstein
  19. Actually, the contents are being sold at the Austin Record Convention, but the store was located in Ohio. But you're right-it doesn't look like this incredibly well-stocked store had any jazz department. My guess is they probably did have a jazz department but the guys who've bought the place are more confident of making big bucks on the other material, so they're majoring on it. They obviously are keen on having people travel to thses events and need to focus on the biggest draw. And who could blame them? MG
  20. I just picked up this link on the Blues forum. Interesting for the Texans. http://austinrecords.com/?gallery/index.htm MG
  21. Ben Dover Eileen Dover Dame Vera Lynn
  22. Does that mean that those of us who were toying with our scruples have had it? MG If you're thinking of acquiring the Sonny Stitt, here is a note which has been added to the Mosaic website: Thanks very much Brownie. A late despatch suits me, as I have somewhat more than enough newies at present. MG
  23. Boxcar Shorty Shorty Long Long John Silver
  24. I more or less stopped watching TV when I retired 3 years ago, no longer needing to watch the current affairs programmes for work. I found myself watching about an hour of TV a week, mostly comedy programmes. But, in the last year, I think I've watched hardly anything except "Have I got news for you" and a few World Cup matches. Much prefer music and books. MG
