  2. I found out a couple of weeks ago that Pete Fallico had done a longish piece on Freddie on his Doodlin' Lounge site. There's stuff in there I hadn't the faintest idea about. A very interesting read. It's here: http://www.doodlinlounge.com/Stories/FreddieRoach.html and there's a nice photo of Freddie that looks entirely blissful MG
  3. I'm surprised all you Jimmy Smith addicts don't know that Benard sang on "I'd rather drink muddy water" on Jimmy's album "Sum serious blues". Good, too. MG
  4. Nice title - is that Black & Blue, too? MG Yup. Finding a cheap flight to Paris is becoming more urgent. MG
  5. Nice title - is that Black & Blue, too? MG
  6. That's out in the UK, is it? MG
  7. Oh my goodness! Daniel, what I want to do is burn myself some CDs (partly to learn how to do it) which put the tracks from "Turnaround", "No room for squares" and "Straight no filter" into the order, and on the albums, in which they originally appeared. So I'd be grateful if when you respond, you could bear that in mind. I've got the track listings for the two that appeared in the '60s. MG
  8. In the fond hope that I'll have upgraded my machinery by July 2008 , please put me down for BFT #63. MG August 2008, I mean. Where's the smiley for senile incompetence?
  9. I think you're missing albums like: James Moody - Moody's mood for love - Argo Milt Jackson - Vibrations Nat Adderley - That's right Yusef Lateef - The Centaur & the phoenix Sam Jones - The chant Tad Dameron - Magic touch Milt Jackson - Big Bags Freddie McCoy - Lonely Avenue King Curtis - Killer Joe's Discotheque In the pre LP era, he also recorded with the Billy Eckstine band, Sir Charles Thompson, J C Heard, Hal Singer, Big John Greer, Lucky Millinder, Wild Bill Moore and Wardell Gray. MG I have all of those except the Freddie McCoy and the King Curtis. Tate Houston is NOT given the exposure on all those dates combined that he is on the Fuller date. It's a mystery to me . . . He isn't given any exposure on the others, either. MG
  10. So buy immediately : CD "Eddy Louiss trio" (with Klook and René Thomas) @ Dreyfus Jazz CD "HLP" (Humair Louiss Ponty) 2 volumes @ Dreyfus Jazz CD "Bohemia After Dark" (coll. Jazz in Paris) (LP "Orgue") @ Gitanes Jazz/Universal LP "Orgue vol.2" @ America Yessir! MG
  11. Of course - I overlooked Larry Young. Thanks. I'm not familiar with Eddy Louiss' work. MG
  12. That's the true advantage of the web and downloads. You have some well connected friends... MG

  14. I feel like having a Mosaic day today. Over breakfast, Stanley Turrentine disc 3 now on John Patton - all of it then Curtis Amy - all of it and Jazz Crusaders - all of it That'll take care of me up to bedtime. MG
  15. Generally in connection with Don Patterson and John Patton, people keep saying that other organists generally don't work without guitarists (or bass players). But I was listening to Ram Ramirez last night and thought I'd have a butchers through my collection to see what I could find. I didn't include odd tracks on albums without guitarists, only complete albums with neither guitar nor bass. Here's the list - organists names are in brackets when they're not the leader. (Bobby Blivins) Larry “Wild” Wrice - Wild (Charles Boston) Houston Person – Underground soul Milt Buckner & Illinois Jacquet – Go power Milt Buckner & Buddy Tate – Crazy rhythm Milt Buckner & Buddy Tate – Midnight slows vol 4 Milt Buckner, Arnett Cobb & Eddie Chamblee – Midnight slows vol 6 (Sonny Burke) Clarence Wheeler and the Enforcers – Doin’ what we wanna (Eddie Buster) Gene Ammons – Live in Chicago (Eddie Buster) Sonny Stitt – At the D J Lounge Wild Bill Davis – That’s all Wild Bill Davis & Guy Lafitte – Lotus blossom Wild Bill Davis & Dany Doriz – Live at Caveau de la Huchette (Milt Harris) Johnny Lytle – Blue vibes (Milt Harris) Johnny Lytle – Happy ground Jackie Ivory – Soul discovery Gene Ludwig & Cecil Brooks III – Double exposure Jack McDuff – Tuff Duff Don Patterson – The exciting organ of Don Patterson Don Patterson – Hip cake walk Don Patterson – Mellow soul Don Patterson – Patterson’s people Don Patterson – The boss men Don Patterson – Oh happy day (Don Patterson) Sonny Stitt – Soul people (Don Patterson) Sonny Stitt – Just the way it was (Don Patterson) Sonny Stitt – Deuces wild (Don Patterson) Sonny Stitt – Shangri-la (Don Patterson) Sonny Stitt – Night crawler John Patton – Boogaloo John Patton – Understanding Ram Ramirez – Live in Harlem Rhoda Scott – Live at the Key Club Rhoda Scott – Scott/Clarke Rhoda Scott – Summertime Rhoda Scott – Live at the Olympia Rhoda Scott – Take five (Dayton Selby) Eddie Chamblee – The rocking tenor sax Clearly Don Patterson is the main protagonist here, but my collection is pretty light on Milt Buckner, Wild Bill Davis and Rhoda Scott, so I doubt very much if they're properly represented in this list. In particular, I think Rhoda seldom recorded with a guitarist - only one of her albums that I've got has a guitarist, and two of them are compilations from several LPs. Any more? MG
  16. Can anyone tell me the track titles and the running order on the original LP issue of "Straight no filter", please? MG
  17. I just noticed that it's Ray who plays on Mel's album "Remembering Wes". MG
  18. SS1 - you haven't said anything about one you copped in your last instalment - Johnny Griffin's "Grab this". MG
  19. I think I've got most of the recordings Mel made and agree with you entirely. He's not a dramatic or sensational player by any means, but he always tells a good story; much like the late Hank Marr. MG
  20. One and the same. He's got some health issues but he's hanging in there! m~ I'm sorry to hear that he's not well. He certainly looks well; I'd have put his age, from the photo, at late forties. MG
  21. Now I know who to go to with a sob story as a misunderstood musician when I'm, er, in need of funds... I hasten to add that my copy is NOT the original, it's a (probable) pirate. (Put the arm on a poor old pensioner, would ya? ) MG Why not? You know the old 'stick to the wall' theory, dontcha? No. MG
  22. Oh I know. That's only one of the reasons I like dealing with them. The other, of course, is the OTT e-mails they send out. I just wondered if there might be a third. MG
  23. Now I know who to go to with a sob story as a misunderstood musician when I'm, er, in need of funds... I hasten to add that my copy is NOT the original, it's a (probable) pirate. (Put the arm on a poor old pensioner, would ya? ) MG
  24. Ah, thanks Jim. Now it's only an hour slow. I have the DST option box shecked; is that correct? MG
