I think there's another way of looking at Dex. When you listen to his ballads, the guy is a singer! One of the things Dex often did was recite a few of the words to the songs he played. Jazz isn't a bunch of notes strung along chords. In Dex's case, much of the meaning of his playing was embedded in the words of the songs he sung on tenor sax. So, I think, to really follow a Dex ballad, and feel what Dex was feeling and trying to convey, you need to sing the words in your mind. And that was why he started by saying the words to the song. When he hesitates, yes, sure it swings, but I feel it's got something to do with reminding us what he's singing about. And when he throws in a quote, that quote isn't just a bit of business to get him onto the next idea; I often feel that the quotes are something to do with the words, or the feelings they embrace for Dex. Another thing I love about Dex is the way he felt about Jug. And where did he get that sound from? You've guessed. So my favourite Dex albums are "Live at Montreux" with Junior Mance - the "Maiden voyage" feel to "Body and soul" is just sublime "Ca Purange" Dex's version of this tune is nearly as good as Jug's "The Chase" with Jug. "Go" "Clubhouse" "Getting around" I love the material on these two. The material he recorded with Leo Parker for Savoy in the '40s. MG

Don't forget "Workout" and "Thinking of home". "Hi voltage" is also nice because Blue Mitchell is such a welcome change from Lee Morgan. In fact, I think I'll get that out and play it later. MG Welcome change cuz its Blue Mitchell or cuz its not Lee Morgan? If the former, cuz I dig Blue a lot. If the latter, Lee is fine; but he made so many records with Hank. Hank and Blue were both very lyrical players and go so well together. Lee was sweaty and funky and hard and provided a big contrast with Hank. Those albums with Lee all have a similar sound. "Hi voltage" sounds different because of Blue. MG

Could be............but it sounds to me like you might actually be talking about Yusef Lateef on 'Judyful' from the Fuller Sextet "Images" Savoy one? Coincidentally, I saw the Curtis Fuller Quintet last weekend w/Ronnie Matthews and Lou Hayes. It was Fuller's B'day and Freddy Cole stopped by to sing a couple of numbers, which was a real treat! After the show Hayes had a cd or two rattling around in his bag so I bought 'Dreamin of Cannonball' off him (he was a bit miffed that he had to pack up his own kit). So that then, was my last CD purchase. Thanks very much Son OAW. I'll keep that in mind. MG -
I don't know whether Kenny G ever chose to play what he's playing now. I'm damn sure that, now, he couldn't choose to play anything else on record; his record company's making too much money to let him. I've never heard him play, so I don't know what he's like. MG

My daughter gave me this, this morning, when we went over for lunch Not unexpected, as I'd arranged with the record shop to keep the copy by for her a fortnight ago. She also got me two coffee mugs, from the oldest record shop in the world (where I buy a lot of my records), which match the t-shirt my wife got me last year. I also got lots of chox - zowie! A cardigan A calendar full of pugs Virgin Megastore vouchers - for spending in the Virgin January sales And my four year old grandson let me beat him at snooker! MG -
