  4. Yeah, it is always a "she" who adores KG's playing. His playing appeals to women. This is not a knock on women. You don't "compare" Bird to anybody, you compare everyone else to Bird. And if KG is so damn good, then let him put out a straight ahead CD, he certainly has enough money and pull to do that. Why hide those "talents" in a theater in Fresno??? You probably said this shit just to get the bboard riled up! KG's under contract - no one has the pull. Wyclef Jean made the album he wanted to make last year and BMG told him to fuck off with it. Fortunately for him, he owned the master ("if you don't own the master, the Master owns you") so he released it and it sold a little. I doubt if KG owns his own masters and I doubt that he has the strength of conviction that 'Clef has. MG
  5. Gerald Albright can PLAY. Hear Birdland West. Najee can PLAY. Hear If only for 1 night with Earland. Why shouldn't Kenny G be able to play? I've never heard him, so I don't know. But if I could make the kind of money he has playing shit, I'd do it. MG
  6. PS and that's only Blue Note vaults. MG
  7. As I remember it, 1986 was a pretty good year for vault reissues. That's the year that this load of Blue Notes came out: Hank Mobley - Far away lands Lee Morgan - The Rajah Hank Mobley - Another workout Grant Green - Born to be blue Stanley Turrentine - Z T's blues Hank Mobley - Straight no filter Gene Harris & 3 Sounds - Babe's blues Ike Quebec - Easy Living None of those are as important as the three biggies this year but that is a SERIOUS bunch of vault items. Another good year was 1979, when King in Japan started delving into the Blue Note vault and released Sonny Clark - Blues in the night Kenny Burrell - K B Blues Grant Green - Matador Sonny Clark - My conception Kenny Burrell - Freedom Grant Green - Gooden's corner Wayne Shorter - The collector Art Blakey - Pisces Bobby Hutcherson - Oblique Jackie McLean - Tippin' the scales Bennie Green - Minor revelation Curtis Fuller - Two bones Hank Mobley - Poppin' Grant Green - Oleo Jackie McLean/Tina Brooks - Street singer Lou Donaldson - Sweet Slumber (aka Lush life) At the same time, UA were dipping into the Blue Note vault and coming up with another load Lee Morgan - Sonic boom Wayne Shorter - Soothsayer Dexter Gordon - Clubhouse Grant Green - Solid Donald Byrd - Chant Jimmy Smith - Confirmation Stanley Turrentine - New time shuffle Jackie McLean - Consequence Hank Mobley - A slice of the top Bobby Hutcherson - Spiral and in the first weeks of 1980; Lou Donaldson - Midnight sun Andrew Hill - Dance with death Lee Morgan - Taru Grant Green - Nigeria Two serious bunches of stuff. I think my vote goes to 1979.... MG
  8. The Donald Vails Choraleers of Detroit - In deep water - Savoy 14421 Their first LP MG
  9. I've had "Groovin' wiv jug" for years and never noticed the spelling mistake on the spine 'til just now. A totally great album. Years ago, I was in Tower and they played one of those Curtis Fuller Savoy CDs which had a fantastic HONKING tenor solo from Benny Golson. I couldn't afford it just then, and then I forgot which Fuller album it was. Was it "Bluesette"? MG

  16. A decade or so ago, in Concord's case. I understand the company was acquired by a corporate called Alliance Entertainment in the mid 1990s. Alliance tried and failed to buy Fantasy at that time for $100 million, so they bought Concord as (IMO very) second best. Independent in the record industry just means that the firm doesn't have its own distribution chain in the USA. MGM was technically an independent. So was ABC. Capitol was a small firm, owned by Johnny Mercer, Buddy DeSylva and Glenn Wallichs, when it started, but had its own distribution from the beginning, so was technically a major. MG

  21. Found this rare item a few months ago. BirdandDizzy, for your information, Bacsik remains in background through the whole session! Yeah, I just love this album. Bacsik his really great on the background and very good harmony with the piano. There is also other recording with the same personnel (you also found the EP) : "Art Simmons" and his orchestra, recorded 9 november 1959 for Ducretet Thomson w. Clark Terry, Eric Dixon (fl, sax), Art Simmons (p), Elek Bacsik (g), Michel Gaudry (b), Kenny Clarke (dm) and Billie Poole (voc). So sad, Billie died this year in May. My friend Art Simmons is proud of this album and that's one of the few albums where you can hear -even in a bigger band- the trio of the Mars Club... (--Art, if you read this message...!--) --Steven I'm sorry to hear about Billie Poole. I love her album "Sermonette". You can SEE that cloud popping over the hill. Now playing MG
  22. That's the only one Lord has in the discography. MG
