xricci: Is there a way to make the New Posts link (at AAJ) work in a more intelligent manner? I'm just wondering... I'm thinking the way New Posts link functions is an odd limitation of the vBulletin software? But, I could be wrong. Maybe 'I' am the problem and don't understand what the New Posts link is supposed to do.

I'm happy with the amount of information I've gained, regarding Frank Rosolino, since I posted this thread. I won't get my Kenton box till I get home this evening. Normally, I get the Mosaic box then learn about the players. In this case, however, I'm learning about the players before I get my hands on the Mosaic box. Hehe...

In anticipation of the arrival of my copy of the Kenton Presents Mosaic box and reading the Kenton Presents thread, I'm in sort of a West Coast jazz mood this evening. I'm listening to the Shank/Cooper Mosaic Select as I type these words. When I first listened to the Shank/Cooper Select, my feeling about the music was that it was 'good' but also 'easy.' My feelings toward this collection of music grow more favorable with each listen. One of the Mosaic catalogues discussed what great lengths Ron McMaster went to in his effort to bring this music back to life. To make the music listenable and available in the digital format. Thanks to Mosaic (again) and Ron McMaster (again).

Sometimes, when learning about the history of jazz, a person discovers the unexpected. I didn't expect to learn what I learned about the death of Frank Rosolino. While it's a sad story, it enhances my enjoyment of the music. The more I know, the more I want to know. The good mixed with the bad, in jazz, makes jazz seem, to me, more genuine. The music and its history aren't just some thin Hollywood story. Rather, the history of jazz is made of real people with real struggles, real success, and real failures. I like things that find a way to seem genuine. My copy of the Kenton Presents Mosaic will be arriving on 7/2/2004. I look forward to hearing the music now that I know some history of the life of Frank Rosolino. Till reading about him at the Mosaic web site, I'd never heard of Rosolino (or Holman). My knowlege of jazz continues to grow. Sometimes, such as with Rosolino, in unexpected directions. As a result, I feel a 'pull' from the music and its history. The 'pull' grows stronger as my knowledge of the music grows deeper.

Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
wesbed replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
No problem. No worries or concerns from me. I didn't take anything negative from what you wrote. Not in the slightest. I'm glad that somebody actually reads my posts and takes the time to respond now and again. Any response, no response, or just knowing I can come to the Organissimo board and post my opinions, observations, and rants is good enough for me. Some people are active with the blogging thing. Not me, my blog is all over the Organissimo board. I don't need a personal blog. -
I just learned this, from AMG, how Rosolino died. How weird. The horrible way that Frank Rosolino's life ended (killing himself after shooting his two sons) has largely overshadowed his earlier musical accomplishments. One of the top trombonists of the 1950s, Rosolino's fluid and often-humorous style put him near the top of his field for awhile.

'Miles In The Sky' is worth getting for three reasons: 1. It's close enough to the classic 60s Quintet that it sounds nearly the same 2. You get to hear George Benson 3. Tony Williams slams the drums every way they can be slammed, bounced, and banged, which results in quite an enjoyable listening experience

If all interested parties would donate $5 or $10 per month, the cost of the board's own server would be easily covered and then some. I'd rather pay a little of my own money to support what I enjoy than to be forced to answer to the rules and regulations of a corporate board.

Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
wesbed replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I've never heard Nick Drake actually, nor a Steely Dan tune that sounded like this. I have 'heard' Nick Drake and plenty of Steely Dan. I can't think of a Steely tune that sounds like Life Wish either. But, the images of Steely Dan still came to mind upon hearing Life Wish. Maybe it's because both, Life Wish and Steely Dan's music, are of a higher-than-average quality? -
Wait, wait... wait. There are a couple of other users of this board, which I've traded emails with, who have purchased more Mosaics than I.

Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
wesbed replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I'm listening to Life Wish as I type these words. I don't know what it is about this song but... very nice. It sounds relaxing, yet not. I picture an ocean scene, somewhere near Margaritaville. I picture the audience drifting at a Phish concert. I picture a room created of earth tones and natural wood textures. I sense an oddly familiar intro or exit to/from a Steely Dan tune, with a little influence from Nick Drake. I picture taking an evening walk around my town, during the July rainy season. The scent of the wet desert hanging heavy in the air. Life Wish is comfortable and cozy. The song has the same effect on my psyche as listening to the entirety of 'Kind of Blue.' Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered. Relaxed, content... believing that the world is a good place and my life is going well. -
In my opinion, pre-recorded CD-based music is a slowly, dying technology. The big recording companies are trying what they think will work, grabbing at straws, to keep selling their wares. Rather than work with the new technology, or find better marketing techniques, they choose to place 'guilty' labels all over the product, and remind those of us who buy the product that we could be criminals if we aren't careful. The management of these businesses must be a very unimaginative group, far removed from the desires of the customers. The big recording companies can't enforce the 'FBI warning' nonsense. They can't stop the geeks from cracking their anti-copy technology. I'm certain that candlemakers must have had a good bit of business till the electric light was invented. Yet, the electric light has endured while the candle has not. The recording companies don't offer more competitive pricing, they don't offer a better-quality product, and they don't offer anything 'real' to make their product sell better. Not to mention competition for the disposable dollar from computer software, DVDs, and other such items. Mosaic offers a good product, packaged and marketed well. For me, I don't want a copy of a Mosaic set. I want the real set. The full experience. The genuine article. Until the large recording companies find a better way to create, market, and sell their product, such as what Mosaic is already doing, the large recording companies aren't going to sell their product. All the legal threats in the world won't make the consumer buy the product. An FBI warning and a copy-protect label is nothing short of a sharp stick in the eye to those consumers who have paid legitimate money for a legitimate product. EMI: I'll miss the Blue Note product, but, I hope you go to bankruptcy with your FBI warnings and notices of copy-protection. F.U.

You talking 'bout me? My Kenton order was placed last night. Heh.

I went to Border's last night. They didn't have single copy of the new RVGs on their shelves. I wasn't able to make a purchase. I don't know how they sound yet.

Hahahaha... It doesn't look pretty. But, good luck to you, EMI, at enforcing the FBI warning. Hahahaha... If you can't enforce it, and you can't, why print it and dirty-up the packaging? EMI: I don't care if you go bankrupt with your stupid warnings. Yeah, I'd miss the new Blue Note releases. But, really, I do have enough to last me a lifetime. FBI warning? Hahahaha...

The 'Active Topics' is, I believe, a search process. I can't do any type of search.

It will be a sort-of 'benefit' for me if Concord makes Fantasy titles less available.

I'm thinking about placing a Mosaic order tonight. Of course, the Teddy Wilson is the obvious first choice. I believe I'm going to add the Kenton Presents to the Teddy Wilson order. I've been in a West Coast mood lately.

Oh, Malcolm!
-
For me, Harold Land just cooks on the folk tale sessions.
-
The Mosaic discography states: Tape transfers, remix on sessions M-O and mastering: Malcolm Addey. Does this mean that somebody else did the other sessions, not including the M-O sessions? Was Addey involved in all the sesssions and I'm interpreting the discography incorrectly?

You make a good point, yes. The last Mosaic set I was disappointed with was the Bix/Tram box. I appreciated the Bix/Tram box and I enjoyed the history but I didn't 'get' the music at first. As always happens, as time progressed, I came to really appreciate and enjoy the Bix/Tram box. It seems like I've read some negative opinions of the Kenton Presents box. Somebody at AAJ wrote that the Kenton Presents box is reminiscent of Shank/Cooper Mosaic Select. If this is true, I would enjoy the Kenton Presents Mosaic. Some may have been disappointed with the Kenton Presents because it's too West Coast, maybe? I was going to order the Kenton box along with the Teddy Wilson box.

I'm considering purchasing the Kenton Presents Mosaic box. Opinions? Comments? Kenton Presents Mosaic
