I'm still holding DrJ personally responsible if I can't make my mortgage payment. Bwwaaaahhhhh hhhhaaaaaaaa hhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

I really don't want to say that I will not buy the Teddy Wilson. I'll be eating my words before the end of this year. I know it. My defense, however, about not purchasing the Teddy Wilson Mosaic regardless of who remastered it (and, no, I didn't realize who remastered it till just a few seconds ago) is that I'll not be purchasing The Four Freshmen Mosaic either.
-
I don't have plans to buy the Teddy Wilson either. At least, I've not yet been inspired to do so. On the other hand, I didn't plan to purchase any of the last four OOP Mosaics (I'm including the New Orleans Jazz box as an OOP box ). I ended up with ALL of the recent OOP Mosaics. As soon as I write that I won't be purchasing the Teddy Wilson box, I'll then find a reason I need to purchase it.

Uhhh... the J.J. Johnson box? Maybe?

Thanks Christiern. I don't mean for this to be a smart-assed remark to your post. I believe you provided excellent information about Dave Jones and Malcolm Addey regarding the New Orleans Jazz sessions. This is a good bit of knowledge for anybody who is considering purchasing this music.

I was wondering if 'The First Day' is a reissue of the Mosaic issue? Or, something done by Blue Note without the help of Mosaic? 'The First Day' CD has Cuscuna's name on it.
-
I've often wondered about this release. Maybe I'll get it since it's appreciated so much by Red.

Malcolm Addey.

C'mon. Somebody make this fall of the Last Chance list, please. I want to know that I own another OOP Mosaic box.

Brownian Motion: The Brown Sisters Series of photos is very cool. It's interesting to see the four women, as they age, over time. Thanks for posting. B)

What have you learned from being on this forum?
wesbed replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
I've learned how and when to purchase Mosaic boxes. -
I purchased my house 10 years ago. It was the best decision of my life. The purchase of my own house has been more beneficial to me, in my life, than going to college, having a job, buying Mosaics, etecetera. The house provides a tax shelter, a hobby, a home, a safe haven, an investment... and other things I can't think of at the present moment. Johnny E, have fun with the new property.

If you don't like New Orleans style jazz, I'd recommend not buying this set. On the other hand, if you do like (or think you might like) New Orleans jazz, this is a very good set to have. It's classic New Orleans jazz played well and recorded well. This is the first New Orleans music I've heard that was recorded recently-enough to produce a good clear sound. The listener gets to hear all the instruments from the muted trumpet to the screaming clarinet to the drums and banjo. There is a lot to listen to in this music if the recording is detailed enough to hear the instruments. I'm more accustomed to the older recordings of Louis Armstrong and Bix where the playing was excellent but the recording quality wasn't so good. The New Orleans Jazz Mosaic opened my ears to just how good this music was if you could have been present to hear it live in its day. If I remember correctly, most, if not all, of the New Orleans Mosaic is recorded in stereo.

For every protection the big companies come up with, the hackers/music fanatics will find a way to break it. Those people who really want/need to copy digital music will always find a way. This, to me, shows the stupidity of the big media companies. If a copy-protection method is introduced that diminshes the sound quality of an audio CD, that will be when I will quit purchasing audio CDs.

Blood, Chet & Tears. This does look bad. Barf alert. >AMG Link< Sugar, sugar, Evil Ways, You've Made Me So Very Happy?

The only new albums I still buy from musical groups, from 'back in the day,' are new Steely Dan albums. The new Steelys are as good now as they were then. On the new Cure... Errr, is there any Lee Morgan or Wayne Shorter on there?

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
wesbed replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, I'm a bit surprised, too, but to call them "popular" is stretching it a bit. My Kelly/Chambers, ordeed 2 weeks ago is #1,795 of 5,000. At most they sold 1,850. I do agree that, overall, these sets proved to be not so popular. I mean, for as outstanding as these sets are, I'm not sure either set will break the 2000 units mark. I've forgotten which set numbers people have been receiving from Mosaic. Maybe the sets did sell past 2000 units each? When the sets went to Last Chance, however, they seemed to become very popular amongst the jazz fanatics. I'm guessing/hoping that the jazz discusson boards sold many of the sets on behalf of Mosaic. I wouldn't have purchased my sets had it not been for the Organissimo board. I'm still surprised how fast the Vee Jay sets sold when compared to the T/K/M and New Orleans sets, considering how long each of the four sets was available in Last Chance. It seems like the T/K/M was in Last Chance for a couple of months (or more). The New Orleans box is still in Last Chance as of today. -
These words, alone, make me cringe.

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
wesbed replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I, too, believe this explanation to be more realistic and practical. It would make no sense for Mosaic to have manufactured sets that cannot be sold. Still, I'm surprised how fast Mosaic was able to sell the remaining Vee Jay sets. I never believed the Vee Jays would prove so popular in light of all the alternate takes. -
Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
wesbed replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This is an interesting thought that is quite plausible. I hadn't considered it. -

When you compare how long the T/K/M and New Orleans Jazz Mosaics hung in Last Chance, it's very surprising how fast the Vee Jay Mosaics went to OOP. Were the Vee Jays in Last Chance for a month? Maybe less? -
There is no point in me purchasing the Atlantic New Orleans box AGAIN. I purchased my copy a couple of months ago. This is no fun when I don't have a need to purchase Last Chance items to keep up with AfricaBrass and ghost of miles.

The Vee Jays are gone while the New Orleans Jazz box is still hanging around. While not the same style of jazz as the Vee Jay sets, there is nothing wrong with the New Orleans Jazz box.
