I prefer the clear cases used on the RVGs. I don’t know why, I just think the clear cases are cooler than the old-fashioned black cases still used by Mosaic (not that it makes a difference regarding the music). You know the security strip placed on inside of the CD case? I don’t know what it’s called. It looks like a mixture of black tape and aluminum. The strip is usually located on the inside of the CD case, below where the CD is stored. Due to the see-through plastic used on the RVGs, if the security strip exists, you can see it stuck there, usually covering up part of a famous jazz player’s face or instrument. I’d rather not see the security strip smeared across the face of, say, Freddie Hubbard or Dexter Gordon. As a result, I have to pull the case apart, tear hell out of my thumbnail to remove the security strip, then snap the case back together. Where do these strips come from? Are they inserted during the CD manufacturing/packing process? If I purchase my CDs from an internet vendor, rather than a retail store, would the security strips still be present? I’m thinking that certain production runs of CDs are done for the retail market and those are the CDs that have the security strips inserted. It seems like I’m seeing more and more of these strips lately. Anybody else notice the same thing? Or, maybe I’m just purchasing too many CDs?

My Dad hates Gorelick. My Dad made the comment, "He plays his notes upside-down, the big end comes out first." If you listen to G-Boy's notes, they do sound this way. I began to really dislike Gorelick when I thought of his notes being played upside-down. FYI: My Dad is a Paul Desmond person.

I've never thought too much about Stanley Turrentine. Not too much good and not too much bad. Yeah, I know who he is and I've heard him play. I own the Turrentine RVGs. For whatever reason, his style never spoke to me. He's always seemed, to me, to be more of a soulful or R&B type of jazz player. I've asked myself the question, why listen to Turrentine when I can listen to Mobley, Coltrane, Dexter, Sonny Rollins, etecetera? I purchased the recent RVG Prayer Meetin' (Jimmy Smith & Stanely Turrentine). A switch was flipped somewhere in my brain. Now, I can't get enough of Stanley T! I played Hustlin', and the new Stanley RVG multiple times last night. It's interesting how a certain artist won't speak to you for a period of time. Then, suddenly, things change and you can't get enough of the same artist.

I often wonder how well the Capitol Jazz box sells for Mosaic? I've a feeling it's a very good box. I mean, I want it... but, I continue to avoid making the purchase due to the price tag.

I just, today, learned, for the first time, of the name Buddy Bolden. Sheesh. I'm no longer concerned about who I don't know about. I'm glad this music continues to provide me with new names to discover. The names of Lennie Tristano and Warne Marsh are new to me too. I'd heard of Lee Konitz but have, until just recently, known nothing about the man.

I hate it when stuff like this happens. Especially with Mosaic. As a customer, you don't need the frustration. As a business, Mosaic doesn't need the frustration/expense either. I've always had very good service from Mosaic. However, I received two Mosaic sets yesterday and I've not opened all the disks in either set. Your note is a good reminder to remove all the shrink wrap to make certain all the disks are present.

I purhased Rockin' the Boat yesterday but have not yet listened to it (nor have I read the liner notes ). John Patton on the tambourine? The John Patton? I'm thinking Blue Note didn't want dueling organs? >Rockin' The Boat<

Thanks for the opinions regarding the Gioia book. I purchased the History of Jazz and started reading it last night. I finished the first chapter. I appreciated the information about African rhythms, the influence of the blues, New Orleans culture, and Scott Joplin. I'll be moving ahead to the New Orleans Jazz chapter this evening. Things worked just right that I'll be able to read the New Orleans chapter while listening to the newly-arrived New Orleans Jazz Mosaic box. Does life get any better? I'm interested in getting a good set of headphones. I'm looking for something in the $300 - $500 price range. From what I've read on this board and others, the choice is between Grado and Sennheiser. I checked the internet but could find no listing for where these brands are sold. They're definitely not sold through Best Buy. I'd never purchase headphones without being able to see/touch/listen to them first. Is there a list of stores/locations/cities where they sell Grado and/or Sennheiser?

The New Orleans Jazz and T/K/M sets arrived today. I've been playing, reading about, and enjoying both sets very much. I was concerned about liking (or not liking) the New Orleans Jazz box. However, it sounds quite good to me... lots of heart & soul & New Orleans. The T/K/M box is great, of course. Considering the players on the T/K/M box and the many positive recommendations from the people on this board, how could the set be bad? The answer: it couldn't (and it's not). I'm so very glad I purchased the sets before they went OOP. Now that I've heard some tunes from each, including the funeral music on the New Orleans box, I'd have been disappointed to have learned either was no longer available. That I'd missed my last opportunity to make my purchase. Also, as usual, some fantastic mastering work done by Malcolm Addey. Here is the view, across my bed, as I listen to the music, read the words, and play on my computer (at 1:00AM). It has been a good evening.

I was never into Gorelick's style. But, I was able to tolerate him, not as a jazz player, but as a player of decent, modern, instrumental music. That is, till I read the interview he gave to Barnes & Noble. Now I think, what a egomaniac, ignorant, ass. Remember this nonsense from the G-Boy? KG: ...when you listen to Charlie Parker, on pretty much any record he's going to sound the same... Charlie Parker would squeak a lot, and that's why they called him Bird, because his reed would chirp. B&N.com: You think that's why they called him Bird? That's interesting. KG: That is why they called him Bird. That was the deal. He played so fast, and his reed would chirp because it... I don't know, it just couldn't take the speed of his fingers. But Sonny Stitt used to do it without the chirping thing, and played beautiful. But I don't think he ever got the same accolades that Charlie Parker did, mainly because Charlie Parker was the first one. Anyway, I know a lot about that kind of music, and I admire those players. OMG!

This ain't no bullshit. I've ordered (now awaiting) the two Last Chance items currently listed at Mosaic (New Orleans Jazz and Tristano/Konitz/Marsh) because of this damned board. I'm . Errr... I mean, B).

For what it's worth... I purchased the Miles Davis at the Blackhawk Complete (the 4-CD box) at Barnes & Noble this evening at a 10% discount. There was a 10% off sticker on the upper-right corner of the box. If you're a Barnes & Noble member you get an additional 10% off (a total of 20%). I don't know if this sale is for just this month? I found the Miles box in the normal CD bins, not with the other box sets on the box set display (behind the checkout counter). The list was $44.99 less the $4.50 discount equals a price of $40.48. This amounts to a total of about $10 per disk. The 2-CD sets tend to sell for about $25 around here (Tucson). It’s not a huge savings but $10 per disk isn’t bad either. If you want/need this box... take a visit to your nearest Barnes & Noble.

Easy answer: more than 30. Sometimes I'm on this board for the entirety of my evening. This board is so much more enjoyable than sitting around watching all the juvenile TV shows. Also, I can listen to music at the same time as I'm reading from/posting to the board.
