I just read Chuck Nessa's post here. Chuck's post reminded me to ask the following question. Does anybody know where I can get a copy of the Earl Grant Christmas album on CD? It seems like I saw it in print during the mid to late 1980s. I didn't buy the CD assuming it would always be around. However, I've not seen it available anywhere for several years. The album featured Earl playing 'Silver Bells' and other holday favorites.

I payed about $50 for this set, last week, at Border's. They had it, I wanted it, and didn't feel like waiting for it. If I'm reading this eBay post correctly, this is the Columbia Hot Fives & Sevens Louis Armstrong box. Currently listed at $19.99 with a little less than 24 hours to go. >link< It could be a good price for somebody, unless the price jumps in the last couple of minutes.

I've been up ALL night. Playing the hell out of the New Orleans Jazz Mosaic box. Anybody who doesn't yet have the box, man, get it before it goes OOP. I'm liking Punch Miller's Louis Armstrong style vocals on Sugar Blues.

I took my friend to the Phoenix airport. The airplane departed from Phoenix at 12:08AM and arrived in Chicago at 5:08AM. My friend will be waiting for the next departure leaving Chicago at 7:50AM. I've been at my computer all night, Friday night into Saturday morning, scanning the jazz boards, listening to some Mosaics, and tracking my friend's flight from Phoenix to Chicago. The friend still has another hour to wait till the departure of the next flight. 'Friend' and me pictured here.

I've always thought Willie Nelson to have a natural feeling for timing and rhythm in jazz. Not that Willie is a 'jazz' artist, he performs all kinds of music. But, when he decides on jazz, he does it oh so well. You can find some song clips here. Scan toward the bottom of the page. You may sample Corrina, Deed I Do, and Stardust. I might have to purchase this one. Seriously, the samples sound good to my ears. I like it when Willie does jazz. I don't care who knows it. >link<

I don't listen to ELO these days and haven't listened for several years. Back in the day, however, I thought ELO was quite the good band. Sweet Talkin' Woman was my favorite song on many a day.

A friend and I were in friendly argument about whether a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's mouth. I made the comment that the same dog's mouth that licks my friend's face is the same dog's mouth that licked it's own dog's ass. My friend, who likes dogs and doesn't mind being licked by them, said that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's mouth because dogs pant. I made the comment that dogs are mammals, enjoy much the same type of diet as humans, don't brush their teeth, and have bad breath. Why would dogs have a cleaner mouth? >article link< Would you rather be bitten by a dog or by a human? Well, neither of course, but if you had to choose, which would it be? According to a widespread notion, a dog bite is the better choice since a canine mouth is cleaner than a human mouth. Is this true? Well, yes and no. When we talk about the cleanliness of a mouth, we're really talking about the amount and type of bacteria it contains. The kind of bacteria found in a human mouth and a dog mouth depend on what's been there recently. Unlike dogs, humans typically do not eat raw meat, garbage, and small animals in various states of decay. Given a dog that just locked its jaws around a decomposing squirrel, we might say that the dog's mouth is, for the moment, less clean than a human mouth that has not recently housed a dead squirrel. And since the squirrel-eating dog may pick up disease-causing bacteria from the dead animal, a bite from that dog may pass on dangerous germs. But insofar as a clean mouth means one that is less likely to cause disease, consider that germs tend to be species specific. Harmful dog germs are usually harmless for humans, unless we're talking about rabies, a disease that affects dogs and people in equally damaging ways. But generally, humans are immune to most dog germs. Likewise, human germs probably won't harm a dog. But human germs can harm humans, of course. So a bite from a human mouth full of harmful bacteria may very well be more damaging than a dog bite, even if the dog's mouth is full of harmful dog germs.

I'm driving a friend to the Phoenix airport (from Tucson) on Friday night. It's a two hour drive. We will be dining at the In-N-Out burger on the way. The plane departs from Phoenix, headed for Chicago, at midnight (Phoenix time). Then, I will be returning home to enjoy the weekend, with no plans.

I say... buy, buy, buy till you feel so guilty that you can make yourself stop (if only for a while).

Here's a quote I found in regard the Kelly/Chambers Vee Jay box. I copied the text from the Mosaic web site. Interesting. This is exactly what I've always enjoyed about Philly Joe. He has kind of a 'sloppy exactness' to his playing. Jazz is akin to real life. Real life can be sloppy. Philly Joe's style, for me, has always added a raw, real life, sloppy edge to the music. An edge that gives the music character and depth and takes nothing away.

With much experience in purchasing many jazz titles through the mail, I wonder how jazzbo gets all of his 'finds' past his wife? Hey Lon, do you have any advice to offer other members of this board? Advice as to how to get the goods from the outside to the inside of your living quarters? Are you one of the bushmen?

Unless you simply don't like the New Orleans jazz style, this set is so much better than you might think. You'll need to be watching for the frying pan when the T/K/M and Liebman sets show at the door too?

This thread has caused several sales of the New Orleans Jazz box for Mosaic. I'd not have purchased the New Orleans Jazz set if it hadn't been for THIS board and THIS thread. I read that several others have made the same purchase as a result of THIS thread. I wonder how many of the New Orleans sets still remain? The number of remaining sets should be gettng quite low, I would think.

I want to get the Mulligan and the Parlan sometime. Including my recent purchase from this morning, I've ordered 4 Mosaic Completes and two Selects in the last couple of weeks. My recent, yet undelivered order is two Completes and two Selects. I wonder how large the shipping box will be? The most I ever ordered at one time, from Mosaic, till now, has been two Complete boxes. I suppose Mosaic will ship all items in the same package?

Now, I (we) want to know what else you purchased. I don't believe you should feel a need to be embarrassed on THIS board. B)

I remember reading that you were trying to decide which SINGLE Vee Jay set to purchase. But, I see how it is, you purchased BOTH sets. Ha!

Damn you, DrJ. I was not going purchase the Vee Jay sets from Mosaic. Not, not, not. To me, these look like three disk sets crammed onto six disks per set. Yes, I know the sets offer the 'complete' recordings. My thought was, with so many alternate takes, why pay for six disks? Upon reading your posts about the sets, reading the discography from the Mosaic web site, considering the sets may soon be OOP... errr, I placed my order for BOTH sets last night. Fek! Fek you, DrJ. I'd never read much about these sets. When I saw the words 'Vee Jay,' I wrote the sets off as being something I didn't want. Even more so when noting all the alternate takes. On a second look, however, most all the players on the Vee Jay boxes are from the group of regular Blue Note players that I always enjoy. In addition, it's a Malcolm Addey remaster. Yeah, then I started desiring to have BOTH sets. To me, these are like having extra Blue Note sessions. But, with Malcolm Addey and Mosaic doing the dirty work rather than Van Gelder and Blue Note. I can think of no reason to not have more Blue Note style 1950s/1960s jazz. It will be interesting to see how the artists played differently (or the same) when recording for Vee Jay rather than Blue Note. Maybe I could send you my electric bill or the coupon book for my mortgage payment? Fek! Fek you, DrJ. B)

When I initially heard Marsalis Standard Time, Volume 1, I 'got' Wynton. This was back when the album was a new release. I heard Live at Blues Alley. I thought, "Man, I'm into this guy Wynton." Knozz-Moe-King! Somewhere soon afterwards... I found myself listening to Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, and Miles Davis. I 'lost' Wynton and have never 'found' him since. To this day I don't miss him. I often wonder what his music is all about. What's his style? Does his have one?
